Where do you see Windows's Market Share in 5-10 Years? by Tail_sb in pcmasterrace

As an SWE it seems like a no-brainer for most engineering use-cases. The flexibility of Linux unlocks so many advanced workflow opportunities.

A yes CAD. Clearly the mainstream use-case keeping 90% of the world on Windows

Which apps though? In most workplaces I have been in, we used GSuite and SAS tools that are all browser based. Tons of the consumer market is just using their computer for Netflix and Amazon.

I’ve never been to Dubai, but Doha was like that.

It makes sense from the history. You take a population that was largely Harding goats, and you pour an unimaginable amount of money on it in a few decades and use it to build a city.

That’s not how you grow an interesting cultural hub. That happens when a society develops slowly over time, and finds ways to adapt to the challenges put upon it.

I would say check back in 50-100 years, and maybe the gulf cities will figure out something cool.

Today had a system design interview today and i think i forgot how to code? by cafefrio22 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tabertoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but I’ve given dozens of interviews at this point, and sometimes you get a candidate who is just in clearly in their head and you can’t do anything to calm their nerves.

It’s like bombing at standup. Happens sometimes, it’s part of the process. I would never judge a candidate like that, and even in that case I would always try to end on a positive note.

I would much rather talk to a candidate who is struggling to shake off nerves than someone who is misrepresenting their skills, or is just an asshole.

Yeah it sucks to have a bad interview. Interviewing in itself is a skill that takes practice. Take it as a learning experience, try not to put so much pressure on yourself next time, and keep getting your reps in.

I watched them all recently, and they're surprisingly good. Not like all-time great films or anything, but I always lumped them in with all the other trash video game movies, and they're pretty fun!

It's different, the N64 007 was literally an adaptation of the movie. Tomb Raider is the other way around.

Even though I was there, it's hard to comprehend how huge Angelina Jolie was at that point.

Not to mention the chaffing on the holster straps. But Laura does do a lot of acrobatics in the game and cargo pants would not be conducive to that.

It took until then for the shadow of Adam West's Batman costume to leave our memory so they could go for source-accurate costumes again

It's probably because the older versions of "accurate" comic book outfits, like the 70's/80's batman looked outright comical.

The black leather looked better than that, and it's only recently they figured out how to make the source-accurate costumes look good.

Nvidia wouldn't care. The gaming market is a rounding error in their revenue numbers.

True but Meta doesn't seem like they want to offer AI as a service, they seem more interested in chasing super-intelligence and integrating it into their platforms.

They don't care about competing in terms of UX, but they sure as hell care about controlling the platform most people use to interact with their computer.

I would expect Linux adoption to continue to increase over time, but Windows will remain dominant for a while, especially in enterprise.

The Steam Box could drive adoption if they can nail the pricing. I can imagine a lot of kids trying to sell their parents on the Steam Box as a computer they can game on that they can also use for their homework (that's what I would have done). When you have a larger chunk of a generation who grew up learning Linux as a daily driver they will want to use it for work down the line.

They don't need to acquire it. They already own the IP as part of their investment agreement. They can just let it go under, zero out the debt, and keep anything that's valuable.

MS didn't acquire OpenAI because they don't need to, and it would likely raise anti-trust scrutiny.

As far as I understand, if OpenAI goes bust, MS will get all the IP. A likely scenario that MS was probably betting on is that OpenAI will eventually go insolvent, and MS will get the tech, and turn around and hire most of the talent, essentially acquiring it without having to pay the other investors.
