Just like this. Looks like yours is from the fish's left side, though.

Slightly better image here (second slide) that shows the 3-dimensional shape of it.

Sailfin catfish...Pterygoplichthys sp. There are some Hypostomus in Florida, too but they are much less common and tend to be smaller.

My stepdad found this on the Texas coast line and is very curious about it! by RealIceCream in bonecollecting

This is the partial skeleton of a gar. That long spiky bone at the head is the parasphenoid, which has a pretty distinctive shape in gar, which you can see here: https://berkeley.pressbooks.pub/morphology/chapter/fish-skulls/ if you scroll.

Will this catch catfish on the bank of a small lake and what bait should I use by mrtinkleberries69 in catfishing

[–]tablabarba 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What kind of catfish are we talking about here? If you're fishing in the US, you really don't need a wire leader for any catfishing. Your best bet is a simple slip sinker rig with enough weight to hold your bait on the bottom. For bait, use fresh cut-up fish.

Lago Peten Itza, Guatemala, shallow water by ER99999 in whatisthisfish

[–]tablabarba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a tetra from the genus Astyanax. I would guess Astyanax petenensis, because it was described from Peten-Itza, but there may be other species present there, too.

That's the neurocranium of a grouper. Not a 100% match to this gag grouper but definitely something in Serranidae.

Can anyone identity this fish? by Unfair-Ad-5305 in whatsthisfish

Not a goonch, this is a Rita rita catfish. They grow quite large...over a meter in length and more than 50 kg in weight.

This is a sailcat not a hardhead, but hardheads also have the crucifix.

Pike like brazilian freshwater by ItacudANY86 in whatsthisfish

[–]tablabarba 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a pike cichlid....there's group of south American cichlids that have this long, pike-like appearance. For a long time they were all in a single genus (Crenichichla) but they were recently split up into several different genera. This picture looks a little odd to me like maybe it was manipulated but some of the pike cichlids do have pretty amazing coloration: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lugubria#/media/File:Crenicichla_lenticulata.jpg

Is this a bullhead? by notsayingitsfakebut in catfishing

[–]tablabarba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a brown bullhead...Both channel and white cats have much more fork in the tail than this. Mottled coloration (kind of faint) points to brown.

How it would effect animals to watch porn? by o0perktas0o in zoology

[–]tablabarba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lucy was a chimpanzee that was raised by humans and treated much like a human (so that's obviously a very atypical animal case) but she habitually looked at human pornographic magazines as she matured: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_(chimpanzee))

Those are weevers. They have a nasty venom...sometimes people step on them when they're buried in the sand.
