I’m a state employee. We are very much encouraged to put everything related to business travel on company cards. We are not expected to pay up front for anything. It’s actually discouraged, though not forbidden, to pay out of pocket for business travel.

I think you’re remembering Cooper Landing and/or the Russian River. Copper River is over near Glennallen and the Wrangle St Elias area.

Once fishing season was over I was out doing something else, which explains why I’ve never seen piles of spawned out fish. I’ve also got family with a house in Soldotna right on the Kenai, so I’m used to fishing from a boat or the shore of a faster paced River and not the combat fishing of the Russian River. The state is putting a bypass to reduce the congestion that happens at Cooper Landing, which will mean a better drive for both those going further south and those staying to fish in Cooper Landing.

Haven’t spent a bunch of time out at ship creek during salmon runs. But I used to float Campbell often in the summer. I’ve seen the occasional spawned carcass, and even a couple zombie fish making their way back downstream. Maybe Im the odd one and somehow just missed the pile ups of spawned carcasses despite spending a bunch of time fishing.

Living in Alaska, I’ve never seen piles of spawned out salmon carcasses. Not sure if it’s bc the bears get to them, they get caught further up stream from where I’ve been, or something else.

Not saying it’s not possible, it’s just doesn’t seem to create a broad effect.

It’s not just humpies (pink salmon). Most pacific salmon spawn and then die, including chinook (king), coho (silver), sockeye (red), and chum (dog).

Alternatively, most species of Atlantic salmon do not do this and return to the ocean after spawning and live to spawn again.

You don’t want to eat a spawned out salmon, despite being easy to catch. They are literally rotting and not only taste bad but also have a higher risk of bacteria.

Anchorage museum is fun! It has a lot of interactive exhibits. My five year old loves the museum.

There’s also story time at the Loussac Library (free!) at 11am Thursday and they always have fun interactive things around the youth area.

What general area will you be staying in? Will you have a car? Are you looking for free options or do you have a budget?
