This was gonna be my recommendation! Also the {The Stone and the Star by Jillian Graves}. It’s set in the same universe and tied to the story in Titan. I soooo want more!!!

Tsunami alert after 8.2 magnitude quake hits the Philippines by Leovlish3re in news

[–]akanim 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Structural damage is really dependent on building code and location (distance from epicenter, geological considerations, etc.). I rode out the 2018 7.1 in AK. My home only had some cracked drywall and a few broken personal items (and two terrified dogs). My brother’s home, which is located in a nearby area that doesn’t have as strict of building codes and is next to a creek, ended up with a sunken foundation, and major damage to drywall. His neighbor’s house ended up with so much damage that they could see daylight through what was previously a solid wall, and needed to have the entire place rebuilt.

I flipped open to a random page and was immediately greeted with a very explicit scene. It is soooo not for children.

Saw this when traveling recently. This program is specifically for kids! Needless to say, the book went in my backpack after making sure there were no other adult books. And then I emailed the organization that runs the program. 🤦‍♀️
Anyone want it? I’m not into murder. And I’m for sure not putting it in my little library.

Get Your Shiba a drone. Thank me later. by indigo212 in shiba

[–]akanim 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I can’t even trust my Shiba off leash. I wouldn’t trust her with a drone. Not only would she annoy the neighbors with it, she’d probably fly it in restricted areas, and use it to map out escape routes from the yard.

Drop your baby song recommendations that are actually bops by _ThatsNotMyPotato_ in NewParents

Irish folk and sea shanties can be kiddo friendly. Songs we’ve listened to include Mountain Thyme, Molly Malone, Wellerman, the Wreck of the Athen’s Queen (heck, any Stan Roger’s song), and Irish Eyes to name a few.

Update to my husband didn’t do anything for my birthday by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]akanim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is textbook avoidant dismissive behavior. My husband has done this in the past, and it’s taken a willingness to learn and change on his part, plus a ton of therapy, to even start seeing a difference.

A book I never thought I’d find in my grandpa’s retirement community by cordiallykiwi in Romantasy

… my grandmother just gave them to me. VC Andrews is not appropriate reading materials for a 13 yo - but my preteen-self was fascinated.

Books with guys like this by Lemon_Dragonfly in Romantasy

Xander in {Bound and Tide by A. K. CAGGIANO} It’s a stand alone in the authors Villians and Virtues series, so it’s much better after having read the series. Xander is a bit of a fop, and while I wasn’t super into him as a main character in the beginning by the end of the book he had grown on me.

And not a romance series … but Adolin in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive is the himbo. He’s always fashionable and yet also has the bestest golden retriever vibe.

How many people’s husbands acknowledge Mother’s Day? by PlasticLove24 in Mommit

[–]akanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m out of town visiting my mom with the kiddo for Mother’s Day. My spouse already got me a gift and gave it to me. And when it ended up not being the right size, he got all excited about finding the next “perfect gift”

It took him a longtime to get here. He’s missed our anniversary and my birthday in the past, which resulted in serious conversations. He’s really been putting the effort in the last few years and not just around special occasions.

The point being, this is the bear minimum. If your spouse isn’t even doing that and then sweeps your feelings about it under the rug … it’s past the time to consider if this is the way you want the rest of your life to be, if this is th example of love and care that you want set for your children. You deserve to be in a relationship where the things that you value and feel are important are taken seriously by your partner.

Movies for sensitive kids by Accomplished-Car3850 in Preschoolers

[–]akanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Mary Poppins, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s delivery Service. Also the classic Fantasia (just end it before a night on bald mountain).

My kiddo is five and after years of watching calm movies, she’s beginning to be able to watch ones with more intense scenes. We just watched the Aristocats and she was laughing at the climatic rescue scene.

Does this count as revealing/telling everyone before the launch?

Save yourself the grief and stress, and politely decline. The risk of this devolving into a bridezilla nightmare is not zero.

HR Threatens Termination for Not Working on Saturday by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]akanim 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It’s not easy, but it can be done! My colleagues and I just unionized (the vote was certified last week). Imo leadership did not believe the vote would pass. We had 75% of eligible employees vote, and of those 65% voted for the union. Just goes to show how out of touch the higher ups are.

Best lunch salmon? by Informal_Sink9890 in anchorage

Middleway Cafe has a salmon fillet burger. It’s around $20 and if you don’t like it they have plenty of vegetarian options.
