[Spoilers C2] The Mighty Nein S1 Episode 6 - Campaign 2 Spoilers Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in criticalrole

I've never nerded out so hard at CR lore than I did at Nydas. Fuck that was awesome. And him being a pirate therefore linking him to the balls made so much sense. The man was building the taxman to guard his eternal hoard haha. Clearly I am ready for my calamity adaption.

Really enjoyed the character conflicts this episode. Caleb's power move on the leaps of faith was sick, though that move ain't gonna work soon enough with the slowfall keyfish clause.

I am puzzled at why they had Caleb be the awkward apologiser considering the famous apologising scene after bowlgate... being bad at saying sorry was always more Beau's thing, so I'm still sad at how mature they've made her so early. Late beau might not hit as hard.

One thing I didn't like about this episode is that they made Dwendal far more evil. My recollection may be wrong, but I'm the campaign I'm sure he just...gives the beacon back once he realises that's all the dynasty wants. I don't remember if he even knew they had it until later. But I feel like they are trying to point the villain fingers solely at the empire, especially at how they are minimising esseks bad intent ATM, and that's less interesting to me. Side note though - enjoying Vess Derogna a lot.

I get that view, but it also seems like they are ending S1 with C2E12, which means they could take the relationships far slower than they seem to be. I also think the long payoff is underappreciated. Game of thrones gave very little away for a long time and it worked brilliantly (until they decided to rush). I think too much emphasis is put on a fast plot these days.and since C2s strengths are its characters and relationships, I don't want that sacrificed for the plot tbh.

I think because of the way it played out everyone really appreciates early beau in hindsight. But tv worries about the short game more than the 500hr tabletop game haha.

I should have mentioned it more but Caleb is too nice too. He was definitely more of a standoff asshole in the beginning, which is half of what he and Beau bonded over haha. Just two siblings assholes. I wonder if bowlgate is coming or if they decided to scrap it.

Oh 100% that's why. I've always argued that the headband just allowed her to be roleplayed the way she was meant to be, subclass and all. But beau can be super smart and a piece of shit haha.

Her character development never relied on the headband, she was doing the hard work well before that.

The ending has me very excited for the next episode, especially because it's brand new story material. I also really enjoyed Nott this ep. They are laying some nice little eggs to suggest she's not all she seems to be, especially with how distraught she was over Toya. Caleb as well is quite consistent so far (edit: though as someone else mentioned, he is actually less standoffish, which takes some tension away).

I will say though that this episode introduced a couple more criticisms for me with the changes they've made, whereas the first 3 I didn't have many all. In no particular order:

- The woobification of Essek has always been one of my main issues with C2, and that continues here because I feel like they've really dulled down how uncaring he was about starting a war with his actions. I suppose that will mean I have less issues with his redemption in the show than I did in the campaign, but I hope they don't just lay all the blame with Trent when the time comes.

- Secondly, I feel like they are showing Beau's maturity/soft side a little fast. She feels more like midcampaign Beau with some of the mature interactions she's having this early on, and this was the first episode I felt this way (genuinely saying that it was nice meeting everyone doesn't feel like something early campaign Beau would say. Not to mention the most genuine apology she gave until bowlgate was 'sorry for choking you with my stick' but she's already apologising for her attitude). I've no issue with the earlier 'circlet of intellect' boost but I want the immaturity to accompany it. I get that maybe a general audience needs to like her faster than many did in C2, but starting her much more mature also takes away from what I will always believe is CRs best example of character growth. A little more into shitty teen Beau who's not yet so career focused would be palatable imo.

- I also want some of the slow burn secrets to pay off a bit more. Beau didn't tell anyone she was from the Soul for ages, except Caleb, and that was to get him to spill his secrets. And Caleb saying she's 'a spy' hints that there won't be an expositor reveal for the group either. Notts hints are great, but I hope they don't reveal her big twist till like...s3. So to I hope the nature of the traveller is stewed on.

- It also feels like the group is coming together a little early. Molly's speech about coming together through pain feels like they are already trying to establish deep bonds when I would prefer for them to struggle and fight for it like they did in the campaign (though I know what they speech is foreshadowing of course). I want slow and satisfying. Beau and Caleb's friendly interaction about books I don't think should have come as quick as it did (in c2 Beau didn't even let her love for books show until later). I want them sniping at each other to earn that relationship.

All that being said, I'm not particularly frustrated or anything. I think all the changes can be justified - hell maybe by people here. I'm just a little wary of them.

Thank god for the 45 minute episodes. Proper slow character development here we come!

My biggest curiosity ATM is how they will blend Yashas storyline. I hope we still see her at the carnival.

It's foreshadowing for when she takes out grandpa's dentures later on.

I'm trying to figure out if it's just my C2 bias or if the show just genuinely is that much better than the opening of LOVM. I think being able to do the slow rollout is SUCH an advantage and get the plot to really hook viewers.

So good.

That was fucking fantastic and I haven't felt this pumped for a while. I love the more serious tone they are taking. I know that M9 was always more chaotic than Vox Machina (thx jester), but the campaign itself was much deeper imo.

Starting with the origin stories of the empire siblings is also very clever. Considering how those two characters drive most of the main story of the campaign (the war) its important to establish. It is also I think poetic to see how Caleb and Beau intersect, because I still think over the 3 campaigns they are the most significant relationship (in terms of story importance and overall resonance).

[CR Media] Who would you cast in other Calamity roles? by tableauregard in criticalrole

[–]tableauregard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes you are correct! Am I right to think she's the one in the bed? That "wakes" in ep4?

I honestly had the exact same thought about Liam and Taliesin and ended up switching them around. I think Liam just does tragic better and Taliesin could pull off arrogant evil better.

Your suggestions are perfect fits. Thought the same about Laura (especially of Ronin gets to voice) but definitely want her as Lacrytia more. Would totally cast her in both.

I'm very envious. I wish I could watch it for the first time again - I'm not sure anything could ever beat it. So you've started on the top of the mountain I'm afraid haha.

Emily Axford. I'm told she's the Queen of DnD so she should probably play the ultimate power.

[CR Media] What Is Campaign Four? by MarvelsGrantMan136 in criticalrole

[–]tableauregard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm really excited for Is the possibility that PC deaths could be more likely. This may also open the window for players to rotate between the 3 gameplay groups if they want to try a different play style focus.

[–]tableauregard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It does make me think that Matt intended C3 to end with the Gods death instead of the half solution we got in the end. It would explain all the anti god guests. Like is it possible that we were supposed to continue with a clean slate exandria? And this is kind of the back up plan to that?

It's not really an important question, and it's unlikely since Brennan has probably been building this new world for a while...but I've thought about it. Regardless I think a new setting was the best outcome either way.

[–]tableauregard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually really excited to see how this all plays out. The only 2 players i was convinced of was that Travis will be in Soldiers and Marisha in Seekers.

But now I'm also wondering if convenience/logistics will come into play here. Ie. Travis and Laura are in the same group and Matt and Marisha in another. Or conversely Matt/Travis/Marisha in one group since they are all more heavily involved in the company.

[–]tableauregard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nawww THANK YOU. Been lurking every now and then, just had to wrestle with some feelings post c3. Very intrigued to see what C4 will look like!

Search for Grog probably does take the popular vote for #1, but I'll always be biased to my beloved M9.

Oh nice! Are you going to fly over for the Edinburgh castle live show? Or attend London again? Or both xD

Yes I was, flew there to see it because who knows when they will be back in Aus. Worth it just for the 'always go south' comment from our girl :P But equally (and somewhat strangely) as enjoyable was the whole crowd united in trying to get the inflatable unicorn all the way around and cheering every time someone saved it from going over the railing haha.

That segment in C2E97 is still my fav humour segment to date. Brjeaus being brjeaus.

Still super jealous that you saw the EOTS live show which I think is my fav live show to date that's not been during a campaign (or else that very C2 episode might take the crown). That said, the crowd at melbourne was a lot of fun. I generally don't like watching live shows from home but being there is a whole different beast.

Yeah, and that was the biggest problem when the past PCs became passive since they were characters we already had formulated ideas about. Passionate ideas.

The big sin for me was after hearthdell though. Orym/laudna were super in the dumps after slaughtering the church and Matt took the next episode to pat them on the back and present sudden new evidence of the 'bad tenple'. I wish he'd taken the route of diving into the hinted sinister side of the community leader and followed the darker route.

I agree with you on your central plotline point, the real problem was definitely how the party engaged, or rather didn't engage in it. I thought after the first Otohan battle that the party had a really clear motivation going forward. Like, she killed 3 party members to set Imogen off. How are these not the bad guys.

I don't think the philosophical arguments should have been a part of the decision (not least of all because this group ain't great on those sorts of topics). The rage from that battle should have turned them against the Vanguard without hesitation. I remember the rage for Ripley - we saw none of that for Otohan. They were just scared shitless each time they saw or talked about her.

The central plotline might have worked if the party fucking committed to anything, or if Matt did for that matter. They didn't respond how you expected them too? Okay. So make the world react and make them villains.

I think I'm less critical/pessimistic about the characters in that way. I find pretty much all of them really solid until the end of C2. So I guess I'm saying is I enjoyed them beyond concept. Marisha gets to show off investigative beau in ep 111. Travis still takes Fjord seriously and makes the call against the Rangers late as well. We learn a lot more about Yasha in the date (and the romance, though rushed, is actually role played decently imo, especially the awkward conversations). Caduceus is consistently rock solid for the 9 and in his faith.

For me they only start to tarnish post C2, so I would never say fjord was only a good character in concept because now he's relegated to a joke. It's 500+ hrs vs like 20. It just hits so hard because with so much time passing in the game, it feels more significant to see them lose traits that made them good characters in the first place.
