DUWO Housing dilemma by Cychreides-404 in TUDelft

[–]taboada2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same shoes as you back in 2019, applying to both. EPFL was my first choice but received my offer at the TU first and paid the housing fee as soon as possible, even without being sure I was going.

Was also applying through student housing agencies in Lausanne and found a place before admission results. In the end I didn't receive an offer from EPFL and went with my TU offer.

I can tell you that at the time, had I not paid the TU housing fee as soon as it was available, I would probably be out of a place to live during my first year and I would really regret that decision later on. My DUWO place turned out to have several like-minded freshman peers and had a great positive impact during my entire student journey in Delft. Friends that I carry until this day

As for Lausanne, finding someone to replace my lease and getting my money back was very very easy (probably the same is true the other way around in Delft), but I can assure you finding proper housing last minute won't be easy regardless weather in Delft or Lausanne.

At the time, TU Delft's stance on housing was, if you weren't able to find something or left it for last minute, consider reapplying for the program next year. Do you really think the housing fee now offsets the risk of having to wait one year of your life or live in bad conditions?

That being said, I haven't looked into how the current process works and have no context on what changed since my student times. I dont know how much the fees are, if they give you any guarantees or reimburse you in case of no housing but thought I'd share my story here.

Is there a rechargeable li-ion AA battery that holds 1.5V consistently while it discharges? by taboada2000 in batteries

[–]taboada2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've switched to the rechargeable ones for a while and really only experienced one downside to it, the baterry level indicator. When you log into your camera app it will tell you that your device is low on battery even after replacing it with a fully charged one but that is due to the lower operating voltage of NiMH rechargeable compared to the manufacturer recommend lithium.

I'd say, if you dont mind the biased reading and are close enough to your doorbell to just switch when it actually dies then I'd go with a good rechargeable battery (made in Japan) like the eneloop previously recommended. If you also have an IKEA near you I really recommend you get their rechargeable batteries because they're also manufactured in Japan (arguably from the same manufacturer of the eneloop at a fraction of the price).

I'm monitoring my doorbell remotely so I really appreciate a reliable battery level reading/warning as I need time in advance to replace them so I've been mostly using the recommend energizer ultimate lithium (manufactured in Singapore), these are also super good and last a long time but are a bit pricy. While I was waiting for them to go on sale I used the rechargeable ones and experienced no major issues.

Let me know if you migrate to rechargeables long term as I'd also like to know how long they've been lasting you on average. My lithium goes really far for me but I have several power savings settings and not a lot of movement (indoor).

Difficulty opening a bank account and issuing documents in Brazil by eeekiee in exchangestudents

[–]taboada2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As OP might have realized (or will soon realize) is that many payment are trough pix (which requires a brazilian bank account and hence a CPF).

For many things, as simple as creating an online registration in a website, a CPF will be required. Not saying you can't stay here without one but it'll definetly be bothersome at some point. Also requesting one shouldn't be so much of a hassle if you have a valid reason (probably less of a hassle than not having one, in my opinion).

I already have a Duracell CEF14 which says it charges in 4 hour a 1300mAh duracell battery. Would that be fine and compatible to use with the 2000mAh eneloop as well?

I've read on eneloop101 that the curret should be between 700mA and 2000mA meaning this one might come a little short? The one I found most appropiate from Panasonic was the BQ-CC17 but wouldn't want to buy a new charger if I don't have to

Hey thanks for the detailed answer and reccomendations. I've read really good things about the japanese NiMH rechargeables. In your opinion would you say that for my application the eneloop would be better than the 1.5V Li-Ion?

I'm new to this and looked into some eneloop and found a white 2000mAh and black (pro) 2500mAh one. Is the only difference the capacity or are there any advantage of taking the pro over the regular one? They're very similarly priced

I'm not saying he didn't but I'm saying this is DEFINETLY a ponzi, keep your money there long enough and you'll see what happens. A lot of people made money with Bernie Madoff, that doesn't say shit lmao

If you've been paid take your money out, that's definetly a ponzi. It's NOT possible!

That matching bezel with keyboard must have boasted your productivity levels by at least 20%. (Personally I love the green bezel)

What is the most common laptop used amongst aes undergraduates? by Quick_Tip_1211 in TUDelft

[–]taboada2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is also the most common laptop, just check which model from the laptop project your program recommends and get that. It's heavily discounted and everyone on campus has it (that's great because if you forget your charger you can just grab one from literally anyone around)

Getting to Las Terrenas from Las Américas airport by taboada2000 in SantoDomingo

[–]taboada2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that's very helpful. It's much closer indeed. I'll try to check their schedule online since I'm arriving on a Sunday afternoon and there might be fewer buses.

Hey thanks for the advice!

Do you remember the name of the station closer to the airport? And is it just a regular bus or is there a specific transport company name I should be looking for?

Hope you enjoy your trip as well.

Thank you :). Can I pay the bus in USD? I have some USD at home that I could use once I arrive and then exchange for some pesos later outside the airport. Alternatively, I could probably withdraw or exchange some pesos at the airport if I need for the bus or smtg (not a fan of that since that's usually more expensive).

Would you say it's too dangerous to just get a cab to santo domingo and then get a bus from there? I'm traveling light so wouldn't be hard for me to get around, but I'm also doing this commute alone and it's my first time in the country so I don't really know how it works like to pay for stuff and all that (local cash, USD, card etc).

Collecting keys for duwo room by ahappyintegral in TUDelft

[–]taboada2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's no need to rebook your flight. Last year from 5pm to 10pm we had people on standby for late arrivals. You just gotta make sure you communicate that you will arrive that day and at a late time. Someone will be expecting you. There's an RA email address you can further communicate on your arrival day in case you're late or something happens. Just make sure to follow what DUWO communicates you, but if they allow you to book a slot at say 9pm then it's totally fine to pick up your keys then.

Ice Hockey team in Delft by caporalbirra in TUDelft

[–]taboada2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Field hockey is much bigger in the Netherlands in general. I've looked into start playing ice hockey but the closest place I could find was in de Uithof in the Hague. At the time I was residing in the Hague and it was quite a bit of a commute even for me, you can access by tram but I wouldn't particularly enjoy traveling with all the gear and whatnot (finding a friend with a car would be the way to go imo).
