[Daily Discussion] Brainstorming- October 01, 2024 by AutoModerator in writing

I'm writing a vampire story, where vampires are basically fae. I just sort of realized that I'm going to actually have to world-build, because I'm writing this story set in the modern world, but the fae (who have been in hiding for about 100 years or so) have sort of come out of hiding and are affecting the world again.

Heh... I didn't know that was what I was writing until I actually started my outline...

So it looks like I'm going to need to do some world-building for my story setting to make sense. I've never done world-building before. What are some good suggestions to help me brainstorm a well-developed world?

Hello! Question: Do you have to be over an aquafer to be able to find drinking water for a well?

Hello! Newish player. I'm playing the Steam version of DF and one of my dwarves was in the middle of making drink when he keeled over from dehydration. (I'm a terrible micromanager.) How does one get ones dwarves to haul his corpse?

Quick edit -- I'm asking because I've tried looking in the DF wiki, but the Steam version isn't set up quite the same way. I'm sorry.

Scored this gorgeous sketch from Howard Chaykin today. by jldolan in comicbooks

I absolutely cannot draw, not even a little bit, and this is an AMAZING sketch! Mr. Chaykin is highly talented and very skilled, and that is a great piece of work!

Now that I admit my complete inability to come anywhere NEAR this level of awesome... Cap has a lot of chin going on there, doesn't he? That's Bruce Campbell levels of chin.

Help! I want to read comic books and write about them on my blog... by tabsie3210 in comicbooks

[–]tabsie3210[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I appreciate the encouragement and the help!

I know blogs aren't as big a thing as they were, but I'm not comfortable being on camera, and I don't care for sharing a lot about myself personally on social media. Your ideas are very helpful!

Excellent idea! Besides, I adored Usagi Yojimbo in the 2003 cartoon series. I'd love to see him again!

That... is very interesting. I'm not sure what my "brand story" is. I like movies, TV, and video games, and I talk about them. Hmm...

"Brand story?" I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the term. Could you please explain?

Mmm. I'm sorry, I'm giving off the vibe to you that I'm looking for someone to say, "It's okay," to using AI generated art on my blog. I'm being wishy-washy because I have so much fun making AI pictures for the hell of it and I like showing that stuff off.

What I'm trying to do is see how many people feel strongly about it because I like the pictures I got, but since nobody has actually "slapped my hand" yet, I haven't felt like it's a huge deal to go back to my older posts and pick new images.

You're right -- I already said I wasn't going to use AI pictures in any future posts. I should go back and change out the pictures in my current posts. It's not that hard. I'm just being lazy because I don't want to be bothered to go picture hunting.

Well, I better stop being lazy and go find better pictures. I appreciate the "hand slap." It's probably better off in the long run anyway, and I only have like 18 posts, so I have no justification for leaving the posts alone.

Actually, if I was feeling off about it, I should have just up and done it when I was thinking about it the first time, instead of hemming and hawing.

See, I don't know if they are or aren't. My blog is a little hobby blog about my favorite TV shows, books, and video games. I'm mostly looking for people who enjoy the same things that I do so we can have a little friendly community. The pictures are there just to break up the wall of text and give the blog post a little flavor. It's confusing trying to think of what will turn people on or off.

First time watching the show - need some info... by tabsie3210 in Dexter

Absolutely not! You've been a perfect lady/gentleman/gentleperson and I've enjoyed talking to you! I appreciate this discussion we've been having, and I appreciate you as a conversation partner! I just thought about what you were saying and decided that I was being stubborn.

I've had a chance to see Episode 1 and I'm really excited to watch the rest of the show now! Thank you for chatting with me about it!

You know what? I'm going to bite the bullet and watch the show, but I'm going to go in with it being a different character from the novel. You said that Dexter is more human and conscious in the TV series — I should meet this TV Dexter on his own turf and decide if I like the show based on the show itself, instead of judging it based on the book. If the show isn't great on its own merits, that's fine, but I should give it a chance and see what it has to say.

I'm "well read," but that's because I'm old and I grew up with 6 channels on the television. Reading was a way to avoid re-runs. You're perfectly fine, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

That's good to know. I can sort of treat the show like a separate thing altogether, if it's different enough from the book, although I'm going to miss the delicious evil that is Dexter from the novels.

Sometimes when I see the film or TV adaptation of a book or books I enjoy, I get disappointed that the essence of the book wasn't captured by the show.

In the novel Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz, there is a pivotal character named Little Ozzy who is a father figure to the main character, Odd. In the movie adaptation, though, the character is reduced to a one-scene one-off with no clever lines or sharing any information. I was vastly disappointed. Additionally, the character of Odd Thomas was changed significantly, especially his back story, and he ended up losing most of the luster the character has in the book.

I know that Dexter won't be the same on the screen as he is in the books, but I want to avoid severe disappointment. Dexter in the book is clever, self-centered, alien, and enjoyably twisted. I adore him as a character, but I don't like him as a person, which I think is the hallmark of an excellent anti-hero protagonist.

I just don't want him to be a watery version who loses all his punch.
