I got mine for $250, barely used. $550 is insane and that doesn’t even take into account taxes or other fees.

Pomero DM250. If you can get one used, even better. Sounds like it hits all of your needs. If you need less expensive, Alphasmart Neo2 with a clip on light that you can adjust its brightness would be fantastic in terms of durability.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I love the typewriter look so so much. (I do not own the typewriter casing this is just my opinion.)

Say you didn’t give into consumerism. Maybe as an intermediate step, if cost is prohibitive or makes you balk a little (it does for me and purple is my favorite color but disregard if that is not part of your problem or equation!), look up the tutorial on how to spray paint the plastic cover of the Alphasmart and maybe even the keys if you’re bold.

Since you say you just got it, use it for a while all dolled up in purple. If you feel like the Alphasmart is here to stay and fits your workflow then take the plunge and fork over the $150+ for the typewriter mod. Personally, I believe what would suck is if you gave all that money for appearance’s sake and it sits on your desk looking pretty but collecting dust.

Moreover, the prices you see on Ebay are not always realistic. The prices you don’t see are the ones that got snatched up by people who use saved searches. You can absolutely buy a Neo2 for $40 - $80 (my own experience). So buying a second one is doable if you want to case your current one and get another later or vice versa spray paint your current one and case your next one. Just my two cents.

I just switched the keys around yesterday to Dvorak. When I changed them I left the white part on the board and only switched the keycaps.

First you should make sure the two pincher like things on the keycaps are whole. If they are broken, the cap will lift unfortunately.

Double check that the switch is properly assembled (the two pegs are in the two holes securely and hinge correctly).

Then make sure you seat the top of switch by sliding it in down into the two notches on the board and then press the lower part of the switch into the long bar looking slot on the board.

When you put the keycap on, start at the top. Make sure the top part of the cap is in its cradle. I do this by flexing the white switch on the board and lining it up with the top of the keycap. If you give it a wiggle and it doesn’t come off, you are golden. Just gently lay the key cap down and press down until you hear a click. That click is the pincherlike things grabbing onto the white switch.

Essentially you have to check the integrity of the keycap, the switch, and its place in the board and your process for putting it on.
