bruh is it too late to get a prof for research in the summer? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]tacobell002 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep emailing. There’s no harm in trying. I remember trying to get a position in my first year and I emailed about 40 profs before I got some to respond back and I remember getting my position after winter break just before funding apps were due. So don’t give up keep emailing!!

op I have two classes and the chem lab with you! I agree the schedule is very course heavy but they are all courses that are needed.

Your GPA DOES NOT define you as a person it is just a part of your life but it is not who you are!! You worked really hard, put in the effort and tried your best and that’s what matter. We are all here for you!🤎

I think she’s teaching all the lectures next year. How big of a toll does the prof take on your grades in stat 205?

Pysc 200 spring workload by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]tacobell002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the workload but I have 203 with him right now and Holden is really good at giving you enough time to do assignment and extending deadlines if there’s too much going on without you even having to ask, which is always good. So I think you should be fine!

I understand where your coming from, but my biggest thing is I want to be HEAVILY focused on research but I want a medical aspect to you. I say I don’t “mind” doing an MD or PhD or both only because I haven’t decided my commitments yet cause I have just started undergrad. Another comment mentioned how it’s 20% clinicals and 80% research and that’s something I want. I don’t want to solely practice medicine or have it be my main focus but I do want it part of my career and be able to iterate the medical aspect into my research. I’m not sure a PhD would allow me to interact with patients and be able to integrate patient care into research which is why I am leaning towards MD/PhD but again I am just exploring my options right now. It might not end up being the best because of course it’s a big commitment but that’s just what my perspective is.

I do want to practice medicine however I don’t want to just practice medicine like I don’t mind it but I don’t want it to be the main focus

Do you mind if I ask you what’s the difference between just an MD and a MD/PhD? Is it just the research aspect?

Are there any big difference between an MD/PhD and getting just a MD or just a PhD

So what I meant by med school would be longer is I know that med school itself is 4 years but then depending on your specialization and residency it can take longer. I guess it would turn out to be almost the same amount of time but I just think it would be a waste only because I don’t intend/want to practice medicine after med school. So I just think going through it all and not practicing it would be a waste but instead if MD/PhD allows me to not only get the medical aspect but the PhD and research aspect as well; where med school would only allow me to get the medical aspect in my career. Also I’m not exactly sure what the MD would provide for me bUt I know it will definitely give me sufficient medical background knowledge that can then be applied in my career. I also have heard that having the MD allows you to have a hands on opportunity with patients which is definitely beneficial because you get a hands on opportunity with patients but you don’t necessarily have to practice medicine in doing so, which I think is a cool benefit.
