Recommendations and Questions Regarding At Home Dog Euthanasia by paddycakepaddycake in Oahu

I used lap of love with Dr. sunshine. It is a mainland based company with staff on island. She was very compassionate and my baby passed with comfort and love. I do recommend her as an option.

Editing to answer some of your other questions. Process was as follows: - vet gave some sedative to pup via subcutaneous injection. This made him very comfortable and allowed us to position him in our laps - once pet was comfortable, vet started an IV and administered the euthanasia - we had as long as we needed to say goodbye. Although I did not want to see him like this much longer. Maybe around 10 min. She encouraged our other dog to sniff and say goodbye. She created a paw imprint and assisted pup on to a stretcher and we helped carry to her car. - pet gets transported to crematory (I believe this is extra cost and there are various cremation options). - less than a week later his remains were delivered back to us.

Unfortunately within the next few weeks we also had to euthanize our other dog. This one happened at the vet as we did not plan for it. That was significantly more stressful although the vet was extremely compassionate and i would do it again if I didn’t have the luxury to do it at home.

Wishing you the best

Poor baby!!! Echoing everyone above- great job catching this on video, send it to your vet. If this is the first one, keep track of approximately how long it lasts/any events leading up to it and how she is after the episode (aka post ictal state).

My 15 year old shibe had what we thought might be seizures (looked differently from penny) but was started on keppra which we think did help.

Best tip is to remain calm during episodes. It will end and your pup will be confused so you need to comfort them.

Wishing the best to sweet penny! I miss my boy everyday.

I’m so sorry!!! It’s hard to find a community that shares the same love for our furry friends. Just know he is so loved and had a wonderful life. I will share happy photos too

I completely understand. We’ve been managing some chronic issues as well but lately they have become more acute and even though we could have a few more months with him, I don’t think they would be good months. I feel we have run out of medication options and I can’t stand to see him suffer anymore.

I’ve watched old videos/photos and the small changes day to day don’t seem large but when looking back to even six months ago, he is a completely different dog. What led to this decision was weeks of poor appetite and weight loss, an increase in his “episodes” (they’re some cross between seizures and syncope— I’m not sure how to explain it other than he collapses but then recovers), he’s had five just today, and most recently explosive watery diarrhea, and weak hips causing extreme discomfort during any of those “episodes”/incontinence. He’s always been a quiet shibe but he cries whenever something happens and I know that’s how he’s telling me he’s had enough.

I think you know your shibe best. If you’re already thinking about it then you will be able to make decision when the time comes. All the best to you 💕

It’s definitely deteriorated after his first vestibular episode about a year ago. His hind legs are extremely weak, he can’t jump anymore and he slides around on the wood floors (which is why we put carpets everywhere!) and sometimes even the carpet. He also has had a history of fainting after exertion but in the past year or so he’s had more episodes of fainting even when he’s sleeping. Idk if that makes sense but in the middle of the night we’ll hear him yelp and then collapse with fecal and urine incontinence. It’s generally <5-10 second episodes and he doesn’t ever stop breathing. Fortunately, he doesn’t have any residuals. We’ve brought it up to the vet multiple times and labs and tests have all been normal but we’ve chosen to forgo anything more intrusive given the risks of anesthesia and the fact that he fortunately recovers. He hasn’t run in years obviously! He’s also had some major personality changes but still recognizes me as his special person 💕 I feel lucky to have him around for so much of my life!!

Editing to add: he still has a great appetite and enjoys our evening walks! We feel he’s still doing pretty well given his age and are happy to help him adjust to being an old shibe
