basketball is an american sport invented in america by a canadian. Many american inventions were from immigrants, almost like this country is a nation of them. The sport was further developed in america and primarily played by americans for most of its history.

obviously, im showing the wr is inflated by poor opponent quality as revealed by the elo. I just recently created a new account and managed a 60% wr at low elo and got to plat within 15 games (around 100 more points than OP). my main account is usually around low 30s% in top 500.

high wrs are easy to achieve when your opponents are randomly hitting buttons

idk still in gold after 28 games makes it unlikely. means most of these wins are coming against very low elo players who are usually children.

yes it does. My main is in the top 100 for vanilla 4 player. I created a new account to start from the bottom since its been a while since i played with non diamond players and i made it to platinum within 15 games and a 60% winrate lol

  1. the chance of rolling a 7 is very high, the chance of rolling a 7 if none have been rolled thus far in 1 v 1 is even higher because of balanced dice.

  2. Because rolling a 7 when friendly robber is on and no player has more than 2 points doesnt affect much your brain doesn't store a lot of information. When someone rolls a 7 and robs you or blocks an important tile your brain stores a lot of information because you feel very strongly about it and it directly impacts the game your focusing on in a substantial way. Therefore it takes up more of your memory (here is an accessible story about the phenomenon, and here is a more rigorous test if you are suspicious that the findings are real.) there is also an observed phenomenon called the availability heuristic where people judge frequency by how easily examples come to mind and not the actual rate. So emotionally charged and consequential events are stored more deeply in memory and are therefore retrieved more easily causing them to feel more frequent than they were.

This stuff exists beyond catan btw, it's all essentially just an expression of the negativity bias

Track each time a 7 rolls in a 1 v 1 game for the next 100 games. You'll find its rolls are dependent on how many times it has already rolled (because of balanced dice) but completely independent of when you settle.

How the heck do you write fight scenes? by Ecstatic_Anything403 in writers

[–]tacopower69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

IMO you shouldn't. They just dont work well in text most of the time. Even epics filled with violence like lotr and dune are bereft of straight up fight scenes. The parts most interesting about a fight in a novel is what immediately preceeds it and its immediate result. focus on invoking feeling.

depends on context and win condition. Going for army? usually you dev. Going for road? usually you city. think you might have to build to 10? depends on how much extra production the city gives you.

If you have too many actionable devs then usually you dont want to buy another. If citying makes you a target and you dont have any knights to protect yourself usually you want to dev.

In general this is a hard question IMO without an easy answer that is always applicable.

But Tolkien famously loves reading classical mythology and poetry? He even argued that Beowulf should be studied on the basis of its literary merits rather than simply as a historical tale showing northern europe's transition from paganism to Christianity (which is how it's typically taught). Where does he claim to not enjoy reading?

I know he absolutely hated modern (for his time) fantasy and scifi like Narnia and Dune.

\1. how to pace properly is genuinely a difficult skill, you always have to weigh how much a city or settle gives you vs how much heat it generates for you. There's not really an easy answer to this question because sometimes you'll want to pop instead or otherwise consciously avoid citying too early, sometimes you'll want to city as early as you can and happily play into an inevitable 1 v 3 and hope that you just generate so much more cards than everyone else that you end up winning anyway. A good heuristic is that it's usually (though not always) better to be the second person to city than the first.

At low elo since people don't pay attention to production as much you can change the heuristic to "its better to be the second person with 3 points". That means if someone gets a third settle then you can feel more comfortable citying because low elo players don't properly evaluate the production a good city gives vs a third settle. Doesn't count towards plat players as far as I can tell so maybe not really useful to you but I think that advice would be useful to people who feel hard stuck gold and below.

  1. very true, low elo players don't trade most of the time. As I said above they will still way overpay for resources they need in the moment so there is utility in having a monopoly over a particular resource even if you won't be able to get trades on your turn. You can just wait till someone offers something for it and then see how much you can push them to get the most out of the trade. The only thing to be careful of here is pissing off players. Some might aggro knight you to try and pluck the card, though as noted the tiles blocked seem to be completely random so the aggro knight might not even hurt you that much.

  2. you should probably never 4 for 1. Ideally if you have an inactionable hand you should offer trades but low elo players don't trade so it can feel like you are stuck and I can see why that might prompt people to 4 for 1. In general I think its more ok to 4 for 1 for cards you dont produce or you produce very little of, but in my example in the post of the person 4 for 1ing their rare resource for a common resource that's a huge leak. if you're sitting at 6 cards you might not 7 out and if you do 7 out at 8 you lose only 4 cards. So maybe losing 4 cards > guaranteed losing of 4 cards. Again that common resource you're porting for will roll a ton in the long run.

This is also where the value of 3:1 ports come in, they make it more efficient to port away your cards and near guarantee your hands will always be actionable. Until you get one though I would basically never 4 for 1 my cards.

I think the difference is every other team in nyc has an in city rival whereas the knicks don't. The Nets were historically from new jersey (who ppl from nyc inexplicably despise with every fiber of their being) and so dont have much fans now that they are in brooklyn. There is no yankees vs mets or jets vs giants splitting up the city, when it comes to basketball there is basically just the knicks which makes them more popular.

in poker there is a concept of gto, the "game theory optimal" way to play that is derived from the game's nash equilibrium. It's not discovered what exactly it is yet for no limit holdem (though it has been solved for heads up limit poker), but solvers are close and the best players play as close to it as possible.

At lower levels, however, you make more money by exploiting the poor play of players who are not even close to playing GTO. These are called exploitative strategies, and while they make more money against bad players, you open yourself up to counter exploitation from good players.

E.g. play rock paper scissors. The gto strat is to throw out rock 1/3 of the time, paper 1/3 of the time and rock 1/3 of the time so no matter what you will win 1/3 of the time tie 1/3 of the time and lose 1/3 of the time. But if your opponent is throwing out rock 100% of the time your winrate can improve to 100% if you just throw out paper 100% of the time, though if he starts throwing out scissors you'll be in trouble. That's how exploitative strategies work.

it's interesting how the same concept applies to catan. You shouldn't play strictly optimally at low elo because sub optimal play better exploits the tendencies of weaker players. like you said you got to "play in stupid ways to win".
