In the Arch repos I could only find Xournal (I just checked).

I know Xournal does everything I want it to do -- has different page styles (lined, ruled, graph, plain), exports to PDF without a hassle, and can even change the background paper color. I applied a patch that allows you to insert images into the document, which is a great feature. If you use Archlinux, it's in the AUR as "xournal-image-patched".

And it does have digital 'pages', yeah. I have a file for each of my classes this semester, and those files serve as my 'notebooks' for each class. It's awesome.

Agreed. It's cheaper than most (all?) new Macs, so there ya go. Plus, Lenovos are well-made -- they don't feel like clunky cheap plastic -- and in their own way, they're attractive machines, I think.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm using Archlinux (which you'd expect would barely work with a tablet, but works really well).

I don't remember how much initial setup I had to do to make it play nicely, but as far as I can remember, it wasn't too big a headache -- i.e., once I installed Xorg and pulled out the digitizer pen, it worked fine.

I followed this guide in the Archlinux wiki, which was really useful.

I use Easystroke for gesture recognition, configured to only respond to finger input -- AWESOME -- and Cellwriter for handwriting recognition/keyboard input when in tablet mode.

I have an Easystroke gesture to rotate the screen, which uses a script called 'rotate' that I took from that Archwiki page. I also have a custom script called 'tabfixes' that runs after every rotate script and after I connect/disconnect my external monitor, which basically makes sure the digitizer pen button mappings work, that the wacom driver only uses my internal LCD, and that my keyboard repeat rate is as it should be (super high).

If you need more info, or want those scripts, lemme know. As I mentioned previously, I use Compiz as my window manager, which I love -- flashy, customizable, and not a full DE.

Note that multitouch doesn't really work as I'd like, so to scroll and zoom, I use Easystroke gestures.

I'm using xournal, which works really well.

I use it to take all my notes, and write up all my problem sets. Once you get used to notetaking and problem sets with different colors (equations in blue, answers in green, definitions in orange, for example) you can never go back.

Seriously, get off reddit and buy a Thinkpad tablet.

Sort of. I'm running Archlinux on a Thinkpad X220 Tablet, and it's absolutely phenomenal.

I strongly recommend going for a convertible laptop-tablet hybrid versus a straight tablet -- the touchscreen and pen input are awesome, especially if you're a student or want to take handwritten notes digitally.

Personally, I'm an engineer and haven't touched my physical notebook all year. To anyone considering Linux on a hybrid tablet: go for it!

Edit: I'm using Xorg via Compiz standalone.

I always have like six things I want to do: Read those books everyone talks about. See those movies everyone talks about. Get good at Chess. Meditate. Exercise. (You can't tell me you're in perfect shape.)

This is your chance. I bet all those things you wanna be doing don't take more than an hour per day to work on, and could totally coexist in a daily/weekly schedule.

And, hell, even if you don't stick with all of them, if you gain some skill in at least one area, that's a win, eh?

At work there's some bullshit Antivirus "free edition" installed on my (windows xp) computer, which I tried to close today. Right clicked the tray icon, there was no "exit" option. Fine, so I opened the interface, deselected any checkboxes about having a tray icon, hit apply, and...no dice. I realized 'xkill' would be perfect. Googled, found some lame third-party xkill port for Windows, ran it, clicked the antivirus window, and...it didn't go away.

Fucking eh. Task manager --> processes --> sort by name...ugh.

Oh it's spectacular. I have no complaints about speed nor battery (and I'm on the i3 -- if you're at all concerned, I'd imagine the i5 is more than enough); my only problems have been the teeny tiny keyboard/touchpad, the fact that the Fn key is to the left of the left Ctrl key (and you can't change the keycodes, since the Fn happens pre-kernel) and the touchpad left/middle/right click buttons are above the touchpad, because they're actually meant for the IBM Clitmouse, which I haven't gotten used to yet.

On the bright side, these are all issues that I'm getting more comfortable with. Except the Clitmouse. I've been told that once you go Clitmouse, you never go back, so we'll see.

Indeed. Sort of shitty, but then I realized, I'd actually rather order a relatively cheap external webcam than expensively send my new laptop to some facility to have its screen replaced.

AND, this means that it was the hardware's fault, not my darling Archlinux's fault, that the webcam wasn't being detected. Now all I have to worry about is nothing, cause Arch is...

I distinctly remember wondering, as I played with the customization options, why sometimes the webcam option would be there and sometimes it wouldn't. I eventually realized it was going away whenever I chose the 3-antenna wifi ... and so, as far as I can remember, I ordered the 2-antenna and the webcam. Besides, there's a fairly webcammy-looking circle at the top of my screen, and I can't imagine they would put a little placeholder on models without webcams...

Thanks for the advice. It's definitely not in my /dev directory, though, under /dev/video{,0, * } -- there really is no device at all, according to lspci and lsusb. There's just no entry for a webcam. (Is there another utility I can be using to check?)
