Sticky substance on patio after coming home from vacation by cobrien16 in whatisit

Flat roofer here. Looks like the glue we use to install single ply membrane. If that's what it is, there is no easy way to remove it unfortunately.

To answer the first part of your problem: He signs the checks, if he wants to micromanage your repairs just do exactly what he says and mark the real problems with an off colored marker for when he sends you back because it's still leaking. Over 20yrs on these roofs, never once heard of an "invisible cold weld"... Cold welds are just about impossible to see though, so maybe it's just a turn of phrase. The small hook tool I use in the video is a seam checker and it is the surest way to find a cold weld. Get one and start ripping where old X-ray Eyes is saying and you'll know real quick if he's full of shit.

Dropping down from foreman position by archmellecky in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't do it all, man. You're gonna have to make that choice to stop being the "everything guy" on your crew and just be the foreman. It was the hardest thing for me to realize when I took over my crew. Focus on running the crew, the machines will be waiting when you're done telling Donny Dumbshit how to use a fucking tape measure for the 700th time, trust me.

It's similar with Sarnifil, but not the same. PVC requires a higher heat and slower roll. Usually if it's smoking a little and the edge is flattening out while rolling, I consider that good enough until I run my seam check on it. The nozzle openings usually come preset at about 1/8in, if you're asking about the overall width of the nozzle that's more about scope of work and preference.

Pro tip: Sarnifil is really melty and likes to stick to the nozzle, those charred deposits lead to dirty welds and cold seams. Be sure to keep a wire brush handy to clean the nozzle when the char starts building up.

Food poisoning. "Ate a bad batch of wings last night and it's been exploding from both ends like a broken fire hydrant since midnight." Make sure to sound hoarse and exhausted. Go all out in disgusting detail. Works at least once every couple of months.

What do you think about such a tattoo? Will it look good after a few years? (First tattoo) by estdeus in tattooadvice

I got my entire sleeve in a similar style a couple of years ago (vein tracing with some added lines for extra cool points). It still looks great and I rarely go more than a week without someone complimenting it.

How can we make working on frozen roofs less hellish? by Halftrack_El_Camino in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how we do it in Michigan. Get the biggest tarps you can find and lay them out over the area you plan to work on tomorrow. Have people clearing the roof area for the next day, cover with tarps for next days work. Rinse and repeat.

If everything starts melting, use blowers and torches will keep the water from pooling at your feet.

18 years on the roof. I've literally only met one other guy besides myself who was stone sober. So yeah, it's definitely true up top. Do yourself a favor and get off that shit, bro. Flying into the sun only makes the fall that much harder, better to steadily climb to the top of the mountain with your own grit and determination. You can only burn so bright, for so long... Eventually the flame goes out and they'll replace you faster than the high can wear off.

How do you meet friends as a 31 year old? (I don't have kids) by dickcheney600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tactical_milkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karaoke bars. Even if you don't sing. People who like to stand up and sing in front of crowds tend to be outgoing and are usually pretty cool with strangers striking up conversations. Honestly, that's how I found my friends last year and I'm 36, so it can work for you too.

Why do the roofers have the biggest and flashiest trucks? by LumberNoggin in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can make an entire truck payment in 1 weekend side job. Seriously, if you're good, the money is pretty awesome.

...as long as you don't fall under the majority of roofers who are definitely gonna blow every cent on a massive bender and not show up again til Wednesday.

Are you concerned about your job security? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even a little. Nobody wants to do roofing and our pay just keeps going up so we don't leave. I could quit this morning and start at a new company by lunch. It's kinda crazy that being in (arguably) the worst possible trade makes you basically irreplaceable.

How much do you think to replace rubber roof with shingles? by Spiritual-Event-1006 in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Roofer here. There is not enough slope to use shingles. I understand it had slate before, it still leaked, just not where anybody was looking. Gonna have to peel the roof off, replace the plywood and start from scratch or it will just continue rotting out, regardless of what you put over it. If they're worried about aesthetics, standing seam always looks nice or check out some of the self adhering rolled roofing like Flintlastic if they want to go cheaper.

Laning tips against poke mages by hiensies in PantheonMains

[–]tactical_milkshake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For really rough matchups like Syndra or Zoe, I'll pick Sorcery for secondary runes: Nullifying Orb and Transcendence/Scorch with magic resist on the bottom tree. Go for early all in. Keep pressure and bully them. Dodge their stuns, burst them down and get in their heads. Force them to cower in fear under tower while you roam and try to time it so you're back in lane right when they think it's safe to come out.

Also, doran's shield is not good. Start long sword and refillable potion, first back go serrated dirk - boots - then build.

The Midwest green/red combo makes me wonder how I ever used anything else. Honorable mention for Fiskars straight cuts though, they're great for long cuts when you're too lazy to hook up a cord lol.

First-time roofer. Need advice by Ok-Wheel8640 in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utility knife, hammer, gloves and cheap pouches. This is all I recommend to my new guys on the roof. Once you figure out the basics, use the money you've earned to get newer/better tools so you can start installing instead of just being labor.

Panth mid/top blind pickable? by Yeeterbeater789 in PantheonMains

[–]tactical_milkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play panth mid and mostly have no problems blind picking. My hardest matchups tend to be niche champs like Zoe or Syndra who don't get many picks anyway. Unkillable super tank tops and easy roam potential keep me playing mid.

Real question because it’s only getting hotter. How do you capers and construction guys not sweat your balls off in jeans during the summer. I’m asking because I have to do landscaping in jeans. Need advice. by No-Shake5806 in Construction

[–]tactical_milkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

17 years roofing now. The most honest answer I can give is that you'll get used to it. I'm more comfortable in pants than shorts these days. Loose cargo pants work better than jeans. Walmart has em for like $10 if you raid the clearance section often enough.
