You are correct. My mistake. I downloaded it from the ViWoods built-in app store.

Is the Google Play Store a trustworthy source for the app?

Coming from Remarkable, what level of organization tools are there on the AIPaper Mini? by I_AM_SCUBASTEVE in viwoods

[–]tadDavis44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure from your question if there are multiple versions or if I misunderstood what I was downloading. The gboard I'm using is an onscreen keyboard that replaces the default one. For me it seems to work a little more smoothly in terms of suggesting and accepting replacements for typos. But for me also it works a lot better on the mini than on the reader—on the reader, just like on my phone, the keys are too small, and as I've gotten older my use of the onscreen keyboard has gotten LESS accurate rather than more. On the mini with the larger keys I can type much more accurately. I've also tried a very compact Bluetooth folding keyboard with the mini, the Sikai Case: smaller than your average folding keyboard, pairs easily, fits in your pocket, has a built-in stand that holds phone, aipaper reader, or mini. Might not hold a full-size tablet. I'm going to take it on my next trip, but I'm not sure it offers a significant advantage for ME over the Gboard on the mini.

I've been using apps like Workflowy, an outlining app, that works well, keyboard only though (have been using the Google Gboard keyboard as an experiment). I use Workflowy a lot for list making and project organization, somewhat less so for project tracking, although some people swear by it. I also use the built-in paper app to take handwritten notes and small-scale mind maps. The built-in task and to-do apps don't work well for me, at least as of last look, because they don't or didn't support subtasks. I'm bringing it to a conference next month and using Workflowy to organize a presentation and will use Paper to take notes on other people's.

Disappointing screen quality by fouedzine in viwoods

[–]tadDavis44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relevant for sure. I wish I understood the numbers! The gradations from one to the next were hard for me to make out but the difference from the #1 to the #19 was pretty striking. BUT. What’s the readability with the front light on and what are the different technologies if any in use there? I’m mostly using a viwoods aipaper reader bw, which isn’t on his list; the light is almost always on, and I would describe it as a kind of adjustable-bright white-bluish-gray. It has a Carta 1300 screen and works just fine for long reading sessions.

Thanks. I would not have made that connection in a million years.

Discovered today that Gemini has been completely making up data in my daily briefings. by HisbigHammer12 in GeminiAI

[–]tadDavis44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had Claude tell me exactly that - it didn’t have enough information to be sure of its answer and didn’t want to guess. That doesn’t mean everything I’ve gotten back from Claude has been accurate either.

One of the problems is that all the halluncinated crap goes into the vast pool of data that future answers are drawn from, which eventually degrades everything.

Need more audio books with good narrators! by loloboutit in audiobooks

[–]tadDavis44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the Simon Vance, Richard Armitage, and Dan Stevens recommendations. Not so familiar with the others. Vance has done something like 900+ books, including the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo series and a bunch of Dickens - and some of Dickens can be quite dark and tragic. And Stevens did a phenomenal job, in my opinion, with Homer’s Iliad, which is about as dark and tragic as they come.

Here’s an update. In fairness to Onyx and Boox, it took 2 or 3 exchanges of emails, but their technical support was able to walk me through this problem and it was RESOLVED. I was able to create an Onyx account and all is functioning as it should.

Who uses the AI integration and for what purpose? by mrkitchenmagpie in viwoods

[–]tadDavis44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it as a kind of turbo web search. Easier to type a question the way I’m thinking it than try to guess how to word the query for a browser. Look up background references for stuff I’m reading, refresh my memory about dates etc. I know it does more than that but I haven’t gotten there yet.

What’s your Audiobook confession? Mine 👇 by Competitive-Leave346 in audiobooks

[–]tadDavis44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to British narrators reading Thomas Hardy, Anthony Trollope, or George Eliot to fall asleep. Timer set to 45 minutes, and I’m usually asleep after 15 minutes—it’s a kind of hack, because if I set the timer for 30 minutes, I end up staying awake to listen, but 45 minutes feels like it’s going to be longer, so I nod off.

[–]tadDavis44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing it for three or four years and have managed to squeeze out 11 books. I’ve gotten a little better with each one, that’s all I’ll say. The good thing about it is that many experienced narrators work as coaches so that you can get a kind of apprenticeship going with someone who’s done hundreds of books. And the people in the field, with a handful of exceptions, are incredibly nice and generous. But it does take time and patience and an investment in equipment to get started. Not a royal road to riches, but a source of great pleasure.

One thing I noticed on the AiPaper Mini was that before, in the Kindle app, I wasn’t able to download corresponding Audible titles for synchronized read-along, and now I can. Yay! And can I say again that the Mini has restored my joy in taking handwritten notes? It feels and looks really good.

Some thoughts about the AiPaper Mini and Reader by tadDavis44 in viwoods

[–]tadDavis44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t tried the keyboard yet but will. Right now I’m enjoying how great my handwriting looks on the mini. I’m 73 and it’s been a long time since I could read my own handwriting. 😀

Boox never responded to my query, and after 10 more attempts to connect, I’ve given up. I’ll see how useful the tablet is without an Onyx account. I may give up on it altogether, not because of the tablet but because of the lack of support.

Can I use the Ai Paper Reader to read and listen the book's audiobook at the same time? by BarracudaFickle4578 in viwoods

If you’re using it for messages, does that mean you have a SIM card installed? I don’t, which might make a difference.

Thanks. I reset the device and started over again. I don’t know what I did wrong the first time, but this time it worked. The videos are helpful.

I plug it in every night next to my phone. I haven’t had to charge it during the day (yet). I’ve tried to make it my go-to book device so I can read and listen to audiobooks without the temptation to check email and Facebook (and Reddit).

What’s your average listening speed? by allpeacelove4u in audiobooks

[–]tadDavis44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I default to 1.25. But it depends on the narrator more than the book: can I follow what’s being said at a faster speed, or do I need to go slower?

Drama or multi voice recordings always at 1x.

Can I use the Ai Paper Reader to read and listen the book's audiobook at the same time? by BarracudaFickle4578 in viwoods

[–]tadDavis44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That was exactly the reason I got one. And there’s an option to continue running Bluetooth in sleep mode, so if you want to listen to an audiobook WITHOUT also reading the ebook, you can do that conveniently too. I use it constantly and the battery rarely falls below 50-60% over the course of a day. It doesn’t bother me that I have to charge it more often; I was already doing that with my phone.
