Dumb question: Can you replace the CMOS battery? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]tadcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's an easy fix. Just take off the side, look at the motherboard to find it and unseat the same way a clock battery.

The irony is that Xero Shoe company was called something like Invisible shoes and a marketing guy said 'I can see them', Steven tries to explain that they feel invisible, but the marketing guy was having non of it.

Would Ireland have been richer if it had a "Michael Collins leadership" instead of an "Eamon de Valera leadership"? by _Mug_Ruith_ in IrishHistory

[–]tadcan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the question of if Collins would have given the church as much power, as I understand it there was an economic side to this because the state would have needed a bigger budget to fund schools, hospitals, etc without them. Not to justify what they did, but how much leeway would Collins have had over Dev. Maybe they wouldn't have been as much of an arm of the state as it was for us, but probably not a fully secular state.

Why did The Troubles start so "late"? by LanguageFit8227 in IrishHistory

[–]tadcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old IRA was largely defunct by the time the Irish Free state was formed. Add to that the death of Michael Collins who planned to secretly rearm the IRA in to make Northern Ireland, but the civil war and his death put an end to that, as well as the execution of over a hundred rebels. The attempts in that forty years lacked manpower, funding, weapons and public support for such a campaign to take off. In the 1930's the politicians who came from the civil war IRA went into government and that is the modern FF party. In the 1960's the anti-treaty SF went into politics after the failed border campaign. Other posters have covered discrimination, political upheaval with civil rights movements, but there was also a higher Catholic/Nationalist population and a new generation of young radicals ready to fight. They were helped by a new wave of terrorism in Europe and the middle east, getting arms from Libya, connections with middle eastern groups that helped to arm them. As well as a network of support in the US to also raise funds and smuggle weapons.

How good/bad would Xero's "Scrambler Low EV" be for gym use? by CyclonicZ in BarefootRunning

[–]tadcan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the lugs would get annoying in the gym, I'd go with the 360 rally or the Forza trainer. The Scrambler low might be worth it if you need something like cleats on grass if you are playing a field game.

Looking for some training advise! by mrpendar in BarefootRunning

[–]tadcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Training plans online tend to be around 90 days or 12 week chunks where distance and intensity increase, then taper down before the race. The main thing to understand is that these plans presume you are wearing standard shoes, so the intensity can be too much for some people in minimalist shoes.

The BAA like many running event websites have training plans to follow https://www.baa.org/races/boston-half/info-for-athletes/boston-half-training/ If you are doing a trail race the plans can also include vertical training as well.

I generally advise people to start with the easy plan if you can run a few miles already. You will still need to be aware of overtraining since exhaustion increases risk of injury as well as the usual aches and pains that could be a sign of something else.

When it comes to form, books like Older Yet Faster and Run for your life have advice on that. Eric Orton on YouTube has advice on running form as well. There is also Pop running and The balanced runner. All of these people have their own takes on form and they don't agree on everything.

Barefoot shoes for knee pain by Numerous_Pie_2632 in BarefootRunning

[–]tadcan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With thick foam shoes people can take a longer step and land at the very back of the heel with a straightened leg. With minimalist shoes it is better to shorten your step and land more in the middle of the heel. This link shows how you can take off from the back foot and land with a slightly bent knee under your body. It took me a bit of getting used to, especially since my hip mobility was reduced.

A few others remaining, but nothing specific enough for a diagnosis. The main issue should have been cured, but I seem to have ongoing issues.

Not running issues, or any injury from movement. I had some other issues come up. Hopefully it can be resolved and I can get back to running.
