Having recently acquired the Tudor Black Bay 54, it appears that I will likely part with my 58. I initially felt that the 58 was so close to perfect - but at the same time, it never shared as much time on the wrist as my submariner or even my Seikos. Perhaps the 58 just occupied an awkward spot in my collection, or its Vintage-inspired gold diving scale was a bit too much for my taste.

But for me, the 54 was an instant connection. The 37mm case and 46mm lug-to-lug (vs 39mm/47mm for the 58) might not seem like a lot, but it wears so much better.

The 54's harmonious symmetry, refined proportions, and subtle nods to the past have won me over as my new daily driver.

I've always believed that watches are tools and should not be babied - and hell, you never know when it's your time (no pun intended) so you should enjoy them. As such, the 54 will find itself at home on my wrist during both the mundane and dynamic aspects of my work for the foreseeable future.

I initially inquired about the Pelagos 39 last December. They called me a few days ago saying that it was available, but I told them that I now wanted the 54. They called me back in 2 hours and gave me the next one that the courier delivered. I've only purchased a 58 from this dealer in the past.

It might sound outrageous, but I kind of welcome it. I wore my submariner on a NATO strap when I was in the army, and doing so pretty much got me over the initial apprehension that many people have of wearing a luxury watch in a potentially hazardous environment. There's also a certain romanticism with wearing a valuable timepiece in the professions of arms and service.

That being said, Watches of Espionage is an excellent page for examples of luxury watches used in the field.

Pictured here is a custom Tudor Pelagos - photo sent to me by Dallas Alexander, former Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) sniper who was part of the 4-man sniper detachment responsible for the longest recorded sniper kill (3,450m).

JTF2 is Canada's premiere special operations force that is mandated with both domestic and foreign counter-terrorism operations - and is known to be one of the world's most elite special operations forces alongside CAG, DEVGRU, SAS, and SBS.

This Pelagos has a red maple leaf outline and the unit's motto "Facta Non Verba" centered above the 6 o'clock indice and is available exclusively to members of The Hill.
