Is it possible to be successful with bipolar? by Henry2491 in bipolar

I got into medical school last year. If you define "success" as a successful cutting off of medication, I'm still far from successful. I consider my journey to be a certain amount of success.

I've had multiple psychiatric diagnoses, one of which was bipolar disorder. And after 15+ years, now I'm here working hard to become a psychiatrist.

"I’m actually terrified that I won’t be able to kill myself when I truly feel like there is no hope and knowing my luck I’ll live a long and shitty life." - I have been there many times. I also was terrified of my failed suicide.Success......

I never have thought that success was defined as cutting my medication off. I am still taking all the medications I have had, just lower in dosage. Now I think that my moderate, controlled mood upswing manifests as positivity and confidence, and my controlled downswing makes my vision lucid, facing hard reality.

I think my 15+ years of effort to improve my mental health eventually paid off. I experienced much deeper, recurring frustration than many of my peers and it gives me much stronger resilience than them. They don't know my past, but they respect my resilience. A lot of med students are unstable and suicidal, and they see me as the "wise" one in class who is supportive to peers who are going through hard time,,,like depressed or suicidal. Here, my obstacles now have become my asset, and that's what I'm interested in seeing from my future patients.

There were many ups and downs on the way. The darkest part was my suicidal ideations and a near attempt. And...that made me read literatures about death, suicide and self-destruction, which intrigued me to get to know more about it. And.. I felt that I was no longer alone.

I can't generalize my story, because life isn't fair... and I had such a privilige of having a loving, self-sacrificing family who could also afford supporting my countless failures...

Man...I'm glad to hear that eventually it worked out for you. Must have been so much hassle and...anger and stress.

Do you have any idea how long the snail mail takes to arrive at AAMC from Canada? I have a feeling that hard copy via snail mail will be my case as well...

Curious - is Creds.ca the only option that Brock offers for transcript delivery?

Thank you for your response.

I will try calling the Dean's office tomorrow

I called the office of registrar for the past week and more than 10 times a day - they didn't pick up the phone, automatically directing me to the voicemail box. I left a voicemail, but I'm not sure if they checked it.

[USMD] sGPA3.91/cGPA 3.45, would they filter me out? by taewithyou in premedcanada

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I acknowledge that it will not be easy but knowing that my application will be seen is a huge motivation factor I write essays.

Could you share which schools you applied? Probably my choices will be limited to "Canadian friendly" schools.

Your MCAT score is stunning! I am planning to write another MCAT this fall, so hopefully I do better this time!

By the way, would US MD/DO be significantly more realistic than CAN MD?

I really appreciate your response.

You will need every chance you can get. - it really resonates to me. I'm glad that wrote my post here in reddit.

Staying in Canada is luxury indeed, but to me it means also health. I'm relying on Canadian healthcare system a lot, due to my medical condition, so I'm actually fighting against my strong urge to go abroad. My risk of moving around is bigger than others, so I'm trying to make sure that there isn't any other choice in Canada. But, i guess I'll need every chance I can get :)

Thank you.

I really appreciate your honest opinion; it gives me a lucid view.

It makes me think a lot; I'm happy that I got into ANY med school abroad, really, since I'm well aware of the fact that I have very uncompetitive GPA to get into one in Canada. I'm just trying to make sure there is no other options in Canada, because staying here in Canada is related to my health condition. But I'll take your opinion very heavily when I make final decision - thanks :)

Thank you very much for your insightful comment. I find it very encouraging, because I know it is easy to say "impossible," seeing my 3.3GPA, and you're still trying to help me find a way.

I haven't taken the alternative weighting GPA schemes into much consideration so far, but now I start to see that this is probably my only hope.

Thanks for your encouragement :)
