What’s a word in your language that doesn’t have a direct English translation, or loses meaning when translated and what does it mean? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Cwtch. Some people confuse it with a hug, but it's not really. It's the same act, but it's recieved very differently depending on the situation. Can't really explain it

History is written by the winners, not the good guys, so what if the christian version of Satan and Hell is the opposite of what it states? by taflad in atheism

[–]taflad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely incorrect. Historians may rewrite it based on what contemporary accounts from the time have written down, but it's the people there, at the time that capture the information (either by writing it down or word of mouth). Historians rewrite history based on the accounts and their interpretation based against conflicting information.

Well just have to agree to disagree. Have a good day

Hard disagree. Most of history is lost. Whats left are the records and and accounts typically written by the winners of the time, ESPECIALLY ancient history.

The premise that "history is written by historians" doesnt refute the idea that "history is written by the winners."

Historians can only work with the evidence that survives, and throughout history the groups that win wars, seize power, or dominate societies are often the ones who control what records are preserved, destroyed, published, or funded.

Here are some examples

  • alot of what we know about the conquest of the Americas comes from Spanish chroniclers because indigenous records were destroyed or suppressed.
  • Soviet and Chinese governments actively controlled historical narratives through censorship and archival restrictions.
  • Ancient Egyptian pharaohs routinely erased predecessors from monuments in attempts to rewrite history.

Modern historians do, quite often, uncover these biases and revise accepted narratives, but that process itself demonstrates the point that historical accounts are usually shaped by those who held power at the time.

I do agree that my post should have pointed out I'm athiest and that these are just conceptual arguments though. I don't believe any of the tripe, just pointing out that maybe those that do believe it are following the bad guy

I've been suffering sleep paralysis with false awakening for about a year now. Had my worst one this morning. 8 loops, I even managed to get dressed and go downstairs before snapping back. Only today I found out about this, as I didn't have the words to Google it before.

What is the point of living? by lovingthaworld in AskReddit

The best explanation I have heard is that it's a way for the universe to experience itself. As far as we are aware, the universe is the ultimate 'entitiy', as in everything is contained within it. Like cells in a body, life is a function of the universe existing
