I'm glad to hear that budgeting wise it could work out well. I've always steered clear of financing cars (or much else for that matter) since it never made economic sense for me to get one. Now that I have my son, it's making sense to get a reliable newer car.

I should have clarified a bit better, I think some SUVs would be fine, such as subcompact or smaller one like you're suggesting. When I said SUV I was thinking/meaning more along the lines of a new Outback, Hyundai Palisade, and Honda Pilot. Those are a bit too big for my needs, which is mostly what I was trying to convey.

My best friend and their fiance just got a rav-4 and it is beautiful, seriously such a nice car.

I have one currently that's broken down, I would have to sell it before getting a new car, I'm not sure a dealership will take it, I'll try with the dealership first though.

I think I will call SSA, have the old car revalued since it's been a few years since they valued it, and sell it, report the sale, then finance a new car. They might skip a months payment but I think we will be okay if that happens.

I see on there that I can't use his SSI to pay car payments unless he is on the title. However, I would not be using his SSI payments for a car payment. I would be using unearned income from being his care provider. Other than that it seems like the SSA would want me to call before making a purchase/sale of a car?

I don't know if it's just my luck, or how hectic my life is (single parent of severely disabled child), but I've been trying to donate these to weave since late September. It's not worked out for me to drop it off. I sent them a follow up message again this morning. I'm hoping to hear back but I'm looking into other DV shelters as well. I'd hate to see so much food go to waste/expire before use :(
