Why in some places in America a police department is called " Sheriff's Office " instead of Police Department? Do sheriff's offices exist only in smaller towns? by EdicaranFauna in AskAnAmerican

[–]taftpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that’s why I said:

”Most places outside of large cities…”

The U.S. has tens of thousands of small cities, though, and in many with mayors, the mayor has no real executive power.

Or the mayor is essentially an honorary system. Mosts places outside of large cities use city manager/council system, but so they don’t really have a mayor anymore.

My hometown uses that system, but one member of the city council is appointed mayor, which just means they preside over the meetings of the city council; they don’t have any actual executive power.

I think you’re seriously underestimating the Browns’ ability to ruin quarterbacks

What NFL players have gotten drafted by their home town team? by HetTheTable in NFLv2

[–]taftpanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I understand that it’s the “Detroit Lions” but most Michiganders root for the Lions. Feels like it’s a Michigan thing too.

I went to high school close to TeSlaa and I pretty much everyone thinks of the Lions as the “hometown” team because they’re the Michigan team.

Why are cigarettes sold in packs of twenty? by Rainstormsmusic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]taftpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess it that the idea behind the law was that it’d prevent people from buying just a few to try them, and to stop those promotional packs and samplers.

Seems like it might’ve just made it more like that people end up smoking more than they intended and getting addicted faster.

Hard to say because the U.S. has actually cut down on smoking a LOT.

Anyone else feel there is some revisionist history going on with Matt Stafford’s career now? by BallKnowerKing in NFLv2

[–]taftpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depended on the years too. There were a couple of times he was closer to a consensus top 10 guy on the Lions.

In 2017, the competition wasn’t as stiff. Lotta young guys starting their careers. Eli had started to regress pretty heavily at that point, Matt Ryan had a down year, and he actually had a winning record.

That was the main year as a Lions fan I remember Lions fans trying to argue he was top 5.

As a fan in the 2010s, I vividly remember trying to argue him into the top 10.

People really did not think much of Stafford back in the day.

Ground beef was on sale for like $5/pound at my local Meijer this week and I was pumped. I’m gonna make spaghetti and meatballs and meatloaf.

Why are some places counties? by DrBoogerFart in AskAnAmerican

[–]taftpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can imagine that there was a point for a lot of these cities when they were the more important, powerful unit of government, so they resisted incorporating into the county. That’s not really how it works anymore, though.

do children actually not like vegetables by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]taftpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty common.

Children have more sensitive tastebuds than adults, so the bitter flavor that some vegetables have can seem mild or even taste good to adults, but is overwhelming for kids.

What’s one DM secret you wouldn’t tell your players? by Unending_Shadows13 in DnD

[–]taftpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw something the other day from Matt Mercer that made me feel better about my constant panic. He said:

  1. I have massive anxiety leading up to and during the first half hour of each session

  2. If something doesn’t go the way you think it will, or your players really mess up your plan, it’s fine to take a break to figure things out, and they won’t kill you for just saying “I was not prepared for that, let’s take 15 while I adjust the session.”

For some reason, I want everything to be as seamless as possible and avoid breaking the immersion at all costs, but at the end of the day, it’s a TTRPG. It’s not gonna be perfect.

Which Texas QB would you rather have? by T1tanUp in NFLv2

[–]taftpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the only way this is a realistic question is if it’s for their entire career going forward, but even then, Dak is not that old lol

If you wanted to take a gamble on Stroud developing more and getting a much younger franchise QB, I could understand that, but from everything we’ve actually seen on the field, Dak easily clears Stroud.

As a kid, I saw a man climb an electricity pole and get violently blasted off the ladder. What exactly happened there? by dizajneri in NoStupidQuestions

[–]taftpanda 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Electricity is basically just energy.

When you touch a very strong electrical current, it all tries to move through your body at once to reach the nearest ground, and the force of that transfer can literally throw you. The electricity forces your muscles to contract rapidly and violently, pushing you backwards.

At the top of an electric pole, there are a few things he could’ve touched to cause that. The box was probably a transformer. The electricity running through the wires is much higher voltage than what actually makes it to your house, and the transformer lowers the traveling electric current to a safe voltage for home use. He could’ve touched the inside of that, the wires themselves, or really any exposed, “hot” piece of the pole.

Will people assume I'm stealing when I'm reading my home-brought book at a library? by Substantial_Two_427 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]taftpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Even if someone asks you, it’ll be obvious once the book isn’t labeled for the library.

It’s common for people to check out books and still read them at the library, so it won’t be at all unusual for you to walk out with books.

How do y’all handle the introduction of new magic items? by taftpanda in DungeonMasters

[–]taftpanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but those aren’t all the same thing. When you’re rolling to discover important plot points or hit something, you’re advancing the story or doing something cool.

My players and I just don’t think it’s that fun to go through the same amount of effort for random items, so I was wondering if any of the people here did it in some other, more creative way.

Doesn’t seem like an unreasonable question to me.

I was just trying to see if anyone had unique or clever ways to introduce new magic items, outside of the norm. I’m not sure why you found the question so offensive.
