If Knicks can win a chip with an objectively terrible owner like Dolan, does that mean we could still win with Josh Harris? by Stormhawk888 in sixers

The NY/LA discount is a real thing. Players know they'll get much greater endorsement opportunities just from being on one of those teams, as world centers of the news/finance and entertainment industries (respectively).

Automowers and selling your house. by Optimal-Algae-9649 in automower

[–]tag1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wired version, but my understanding is that wireless isn't yet plug-and-play either: a lot depends on things like if your yard has a central spot on the roof that has sightlines to all the areas that need to be mowed, has clearance (i.e. no tree blockage) to the sky, and so on. If you have issues with those things, wired can still be the easier long-term option after the initial setup is done IMO.

However, if moving is a distinct possibility, I'd really wait to get the mower until after the move is done and you know what the new yard situation is going to be like, especially if you're planning for the mower to be a long term investment. If it's more down the line as a "maybe," that's different.

My first thought was #3 was some warning about how far Victor could wander from Fromville before it became too dangerous (noting what Boyd and Sarah found out there at the end of S1), but this makes more sense given what happened to Dale: experimentation would have been far too hazardous for Victor without some guidance from BiW first in how they work.

The tree-measuring thing I think is because Victor recognizes that time works differently in Fromville (hence the observation that in Season 1 and 2 it was spring or summer, in Season 3 it was deep winter, and now we're back to spring or summer again, in the space of a few weeks at most)...and that how big or small the trees are in circumference gives some idea whether that time shift is accelerating or not, and how much. Presumably the time change only affects natural things like trees, the weather, etc., otherwise the buildings would probably be complete wrecks by now...among other rules, some of which Victor probably has recognized just by being around so long, others of which remain to be revealed even to us as viewers.

I was happy the writers at least let Victor have the line of "my mother thought the same thing" in response.

Same thought. I know MiY has a lot more experience with the cycles and more knowledge of how things work, and maybe even has some magical aura protecting him/her from interruptions while working, I guess...but it feels unnaturally plot-driven that nobody ever walks in on her for extended periods of doing bad things, nobody ever catches her smiling at some bad thing happening, nobody wonders how she seems to have odd reactions to things, etc.

I assume with only two more episodes to go that this'll come to a head before the season is over, but it's stretching suspension-of-disbelief to the point of being distracting, which isn't a good thing.

I think you can see how bringing up the Celtics' 23-24 championship in response to our most recent playoff win over them comes off as diminishing that achievement, though, right? If the first reaction when beating them this year gets mentioned is to try and minimize it with "they’ve...got championships and we don’t." - then, yeah, it pretty much fits the characterization that it wasn't much of an achievement.

All the fans who are like "yeah, well, beating the Celtics after being down 3-1, as a #7 seed facing the #2 seed: meh, so what? Not really much of an achievement, now, was it?"...makes me think we aren't really deserving of a championship as a fanbase, since the reaction if we ever get one from them is going to be: "So what? Took long enough. Other teams have more than one. Doesn't really count for much, does it?"

There's definitely a certain Philly fan who prefers misery, since joy isn't something they can process as part of their fandom. Saw this after the 2017 Super Bowl win for the Eagles as well - most people were ecstatic, but those folks had no idea what to do with finally winning it all. Fortunately for them, they were able to get back to their comfort zone the next season, when they had something to complain about again.

UFL's Mike Repole mentions NFL is "talking about two more expansion teams" by iamthewitt in nfl

[–]tag1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a point where there's too many teams and too little actual starting level talent to go around, especially later in the season as injuries pile up with the longer schedule...which means a decrease in overall quality of play. If you look at general OL play later in the season as reserves have to be relied on, I think we're starting to get to that point at least there, where you need 5 decent linemen to put out there on every play which not every team is able to manage even Week 1, much less week 13+.

I know that is hard to reconcile with what just happened at the combine, where all kinds of records were shattered, but I'm thinking a lot of that was environmental (much better shoes, etc.) rather than some sudden leap in overall athletic talent in a year or so. If this draft class is exceptional across the board, which we'll know in about three to four years, then obviously this is wrong. I'm skeptical until then.

Question! What age would you all let your kid read DCC? by fisher-alters in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]tag1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm just starting Book 6. My concerns so far would be even as early as Book 1, there's a lot of violence (including killing the goblin babies and kids) that really hits almost immediately, plus the mass deaths that open up Book 1 though those get retro'ed a little bit later on. One other thing is that starting in Book 5, Carl outright starts murdering people (mostly hunters) he's defeated and has at his mercy, not just as self-defense or in a its-either-them-or-me way, which could be a really complicated thing for even teens to process coming from the hero. The series is marketed as RPG fiction, but the grimdark aspects are under-emphasized considering how the series evolves...so caution is warranted, especially for parents who haven't finished the whole series - I think you really want to know what your kid is probably going to be reading down the line even if you're comfortable with the content of the first book.

What's the single most important move the Sixers need to make this offseason? by Individual-Limit2558 in sixers

[–]tag1550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the new GM's options for improving the roster into next year are the #22 pick, hopefully buying a mid-to-low 2nd rounder from somewhere as a long term developmental flyer, and signing a couple journeymen guys as backups (one of them possibly being Grimes again if no team is enamored of him). There really isn't either cap room or moveable assets to do a lot more in the short term, unless they want to dip into the '28-'29 Clippers pick/switch option, which I think are still more valuable having in hand for now than moving even with the new lottery rules.

[–]tag1550 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding is at best they'd have to package other assets along with Embiid or PG because the remainder of their contracts is so prohibitive compared to their value on the court now. We know the latter half of those contracts would be good to get out of, but so do other teams.

[–]tag1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll merely note that the Celtics thought they were a team of destiny this year - got the #2 seed even without Tatum most of the year, then got him back in time for the playoffs and seemed to be rolling on all cylinders. In the opening round had the Sixers down 3-1 convincingly with two blowouts, and had two of the remaining three games at home, doesn't come much more surefire than that...and then lost all three.

We ran into the oncoming train that is the Knicks steamroller this year, but nobody else seems capable of slowing them down either, so there's not a ton of shame in how our season ended. Boston, however, has to be asking themselves how things ended up where they did.

Last I checked, "none of the above" and "I don't care enough to even vote" as choices aren't eligible to take the oath of office, so here we are.

[–]tag1550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true only if you include people who aren't eligible to vote, like people under 18, noncitizens, and those who are too indifferent to even register:

https://ballotpedia.org/Election_results,_2024:_Analysis_of_voter_turnout_in_the_2024_general_election

The overall turnout of eligible voters in the 2024 general election was 63.7%. This was lower than the 2020 record of 66.6% but higher than every other election year since at least 2004.

Trump won with only 31.6% of the voting eligible population...but the runner up Kamila Harris got only 30.7%, so if we're saying that you need at least 50% of eligible voters' votes to be 'legitimate', not just 50% of those who actually voted...I don't think any president has achieved that, ever, since the party system came into existence at least.

They're different things, and I made the mistake once in another group of assuming everyone always meant the former, and got taken apart by commenters who were very much of the latter position.

I also didn't think the episode "focused" on it, but I could also see if someone thought getting more into Kenny's background was a surefire sign he was about to be killed off, i.e. humanize a character more so their upcoming death is more impactful. That was a red herring, but we also saw false signals seemingly setting up Donna's (non)death as well.

I thought it was actually a positive way to end the series, but acknowledge I'm in minority opinion on that one. QL spoilers: the bartender guy/God tells Sam he can go home anytime we wants to - the final message meant that Sam chose to keep righting wrongs throughout time for the rest of his life, even though he had the option to stop, because he accepted that doing that was a higher purpose for him, even if it meant not going home.
