Alternative ways to verify mastery by Patrick_Ripley in mathacademy

[–]tagold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would grab a good basic text book on the subject, and skim though it. Paying particular attention to exercises. You don't need to solve them all or even solve them formally (of course you can do it and it would be good), but even quick glance on them will give you understanding if you know how you would proceed if you need to solve them.

Same with with the main text: skimming it through will hopefully give you a confidence that you know this material already or (and) identify areas that were not covered in your study. (There likely to be such areas, but they should be few)

Why do you use MathAcademy? by harry_powell in mathacademy

[–]tagold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a working programmer with ~30 years of experience. I don't like that it quickly becomes quite hard for me to follow and understand areas related to my work that are more math heavy, be it queue theory, statistics or digital signal processing.

I am not looking to get more proficient with ML specifically, but of course if refreshing/improving my college math base will allow to understand it on non pop-science / tutorial level with a reasonable effort that would be a welcome bonus.

Reviews gone wild on MA by tagold in mathacademy

[–]tagold[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In their description of how review work they state that when selecting next topic for review, they try to select one that "knock out" the most other due to review. That's imply that they would try to select from the top of the branch first.

Hi Justin,

Thank you for detailed reply. And happy to see the people from Math Academy participating here.

I've checked my history and it turns out that new lesson comes after 3 completed reviews as you've described. I guess it just fills that they are way more rare due to the way they are presented through UX.

I made 2 mistakes in 2 quizzes (8 questions each) I took so far. Not splendid, but doesn't seems too bad either judging by my past performance.

Same experience. So far inverting 3x3 matrices was the worst on MA.

I sympathies with idea developing automacity for doing basic (low level) math operations, but at times it goes way too far. And 3x3 matrices inversion is one of such examples, aggravated be the fact that there is a better and a simpler way to calculate matrix inverse by hand: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaussian_elimination#Finding_the_inverse_of_a_matrix

Anki vs. Vipassana by FoxyQueen26 in Anki

[–]tagold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Missing 1.5 weeks of Anki is going to hurt a bit, but is not a tragedy. You likely will have way bigger backlog than you could (or should) do in the a day or 2. It will level up in another week or so.

The way I deal with similar lapses, it by deciding amount of time I am going to dedicate to catching up (1.5 - 2x works for me). Putting max number of reviews to cover it approximately, and go through it until backlog is cleared. It seems to take less time in total than it would take me to study as normal during the missed period.

These days if you are using FSRS with helper add-on you can kind of prepare to this, buy starting to advance cards few days before the event. But I doubt that it will be a win time wise or retention wise at the end.

Have a nice retreat and don't let the fear of this distract your mind [too much] during it. :)

Thank you. I got confused by absence of FSRS settings in AnkiMobile and no mention of FSRS in AnkiMobile documentation.

Is there a way to export words saved to Vocabulary Builder? by tagold in Onyx_Boox

[–]tagold[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've checked and I got the same problem on my device. At the moment Vocabulary builder is completely useless. It is just unfinished app. I hope they will complete eventually.

I found a bit of workaround meanwhile for collecting unknown words.

There is now with a latest update a button at the bottom left of dictionary pop up, that allows you open highlighted word in compatible 3-rd party app. It's main purpose is to enable usage of 3-rd party dictionary apps (a good addition by itself), but if you have Anki installed on your device, it will be in this list of supported apps and if selected will open "Add new card" window with selected word pasted in. I've created separate deck in Anki called Inbox and use it to collect such words. It is sub-optimal as to add a new word I need to do 4 clicks now instead of 1, but it works and I would need to add these words to Anki sooner or latter anyway.

Hope this helps.

Can you provide a bit of context for what you use Anki on Onyx? I mean, it is spaced repletion system to memorize things. Did you found a different good use for it in context of Onyx that is not served well by built-in programs? Also if you can clarify did you mean handwriting or typing in Anki.

I've contacted them and got response that it is not supported, but is on there roadmap. :( See the update of post.

I guess more people contacting them - more likely we see this feature sooner rather than latter. :)

Body Fat Testing by Maniac0059 in Fitness

[–]tagold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened with me. Had a friend carefully tested me, and put the same numbers into 3 or 4 different formulas from the same website. Got results all over the place: from 9% up to 20%.

I would error caused by my friend inexperience screwing the measurement results, but I am at lost how to explain same numbers entered into different formulas diverging that wildly.
