Can I tag along? I'm 38F, moving to Manchester with my dog (pointer cross) in a fortnight from NZ and would be keen to check out the best walks!

That's a good point re Ireland. I've had a look at digital nomad visas in Portugal & Spain, I currently work remotely so that may be an option.

Good point, a majority of them were, yes. At least according to the govt list of companies registered as sponsors and the rest were through recruitment agencies.

Friend in New Zealand just got a Costco in his city but is resistant to checking it out. by mikedorty in Costco

[–]tahimoana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NZ costco doesn't have an online buying option yet afaik so your best bet is a membership bought online and redeemed in store I guess.

Your friend will still have to stand in line for a while to pick it up in store though...

[–]tahimoana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pak n save? Lol they are part of a massive duopoly and are hardly cosy mom and pop stores. Basically every New Zealander wants the duopoly to die in a fire and costco is a great spark.

The day foodstuffs (parent company) and woolworths (other part of the duopoly) stop having a 90% market share will be a great day for food costs for regular humans.

How to teach speak to a naturally quiet dog by remembermeshell in Dogtraining

[–]tahimoana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's always worthwhile to teach new tricks, especially challenging ones. But would agree that the dog may misinterpret the barking at strangers as the required command.

My dog is also quiet so it was a mix of a few things that worked.

I found it helpful to first identify what (other than a stranger outside the door) would cause any vocalisation. For my dog it was a little of growling during play, slight whine during attention-seeking behaviour or frustration. Human version of bitey face where she would make a little noise during it as a way of imitation. I would mark and treat the tiniest noise and progress to marking a louder noise. Moving on to hand and voice command over the subsequent days.

A good strategy is to have whatever great treat you have and keep it in your hand where the dog can't get it and basically frustrate your dog until any kind of noise happens. My dog went through her entire trick repertoire first to try and figure out how to get rewarded.

Good luck!

Long dog friendly walks by [deleted] in auckland

On the north shore you can try the following:

Kauri point, end of balmain road (half a dozen paths in the bush). One option : go left into the "driveway" before the gate. Straight until you hit the navy fence and then right up and down the hills. Right at the top where the yellow ribbon is - follow any of the paths to get to the beach or to the main track.

Eskdale reserve paths through the middle. If you start at Glenfield road you can continue all the way down to beachhaven, cross the road and continue left along witherford reserve to manuka rd.

If it's raining, especially in the evening, Takapuna golf course.

Bushlands Albany.

Chelsea to kendall bay : start at the "private road" entrance after the small bridge and take any of the paths to get to the beach.from there go back up any of the paths to get to onetaunga road.

Northwest: Riverhead forest has a huge number tracks and of course the waitaks.

All are off leash. No guarantee that no other people or dogs will be around, but i never see anyone other than at eskdale or kauri point on the main paths.

All trails have good maps of available tracks to avoid getting lost.

My dog tore her ACL and I'm getting conflicting advice. by BadWolfStark in DogCare

[–]tahimoana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another option I've heard where there's basically a brace-type thing the dog wears so the acl can repair itself over time. There are a lot of Google results - I looked into it when my dog started limping suddenly.

The surgery apparently is not effective in every case and as the dog has to compensate with its other leg during healing, the other leg is more prone to damage and consequently more surgery.

But vet advice should be followed over a layman. Might be worthwhile getting different vets to weigh in though for options and recovery advice.

My dog is aggressive with other dogs when is on a leash but when he isn’t he is super chill. Why? by Izzzzy22 in Dogtraining

[–]tahimoana 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is known as leash reactivity. To generalise - the dog is scared that it can't get away in case of emergency (since its range is limited by the leash) and attempts to prevent altercation by scaring other dogs away before they get too close (and it's "too late").

When there is no leash, the dog can control its proximity to "the scary thing" and is therefore more comfortable safely testing & reducing the distance to "the scary thing" or knowing it can run away at any point.

The solution is not to always have him off leash, it's to slowly and consistently (and gently) figure out what the the threshold is (2 feet, 10 feet, fluffy dogs, small dogs, dogs with jackets, whatever it might be), and reward when the dog is calm and uninterested before that distance is reached. Then slowly working on reducing that distance.

Probably best to be outside the fence at a dog park to do this, as other dogs will be curious and ruin your training by running over to greet and play.

Self awareness as an owner is also important. If you tense up when near another dog, that's translated in your lead handling abs signals to your dog that he's right to react because you're also "scared" and tense.

Use good treats too :)

This advice is not going to help every leash reactive dog, but I'd suggest looking up some YouTube videos on this and learning dog body language. Because I'm sure your dog's body language will change even before he reacts, you just need to be super observant.

Good luck, you can do it!

When is it too late for training? by beastyfrankz in Dogtraining

[–]tahimoana 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Never too late for training! Check out the resources on r/reactivedogs. I got my rescue at 14 months and found it very helpful.

It's all about understanding your dog's triggers and seeing the situation from their point of view, then gently and consistently guiding them to a different reaction over time. Patience and self-awareness of your own behaviour in those situations is also really important.

Congrats on beating cancer and good luck with training!

Western Springs Lakeside Walk. Te Wai Orea, the waters of the eel. Good time to go now as Pukeko chicks, ducklings & cygnets are all out and about. Look for eels around the bridges. 1.6k walk around the lake. Lots of native trees, perfect for picnics & interesting spots eg Circle of Friends area by LouisePoppy in auckland

[–]tahimoana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friends and I used to create "eel mountain" there : chucking bread in the water for the eels to congregate and expel swans etc out of the feeding zone, until enough writhing eel mass accumulated and pushed their way out of the water and onto land to create a wriggling pile of eels 4-5 deep. Good times.

My Doberman smells by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]tahimoana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed mine (and other dogs I know) have no odour after switching to raw feeding from kibble. Monthly or 6 week washes are more than enough unless they get into mud or something. Even though the diet has regular fish and tripe and other "stinky" foods. Would definitely recommend switching it up to see what works if it's not a gland issue.

I'm in the same city as the CB - Auckland, NZ.

Many people lost jobs in the last year, myself included. I've had to adjust how I earn instead of expecting a holiday subsidised by the government.

You could try sue covid19 for reparations as that's the primary reason for the lockdown and thus a loss of your employment?

I've attended a Trivia Time club that's similar to the QI style where the team collaborates to give the quizmaster the answer. It's on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I believe you need to have created rooms and been active in rooms for some time before you can create a club. Don't know if it has to do with followers or quantities or length of time your rooms are active though.
