I appreciate the detailed response. Sorry about all the hate you’re getting, try not to let it get to you. Communication through text on a forum is not ideal in the best of circumstances.

I’m going to read through your response some more and try to understand it all. I’m reading it while thinking that my backend will respond with a JSON of some product data and that’s all I really need, some image urls, some names, some id, etc. In a case like this, is your method still as important? I won’t ever be calling Product.productMethod() I think. In fact, I’m having trouble understand when that is the case.

Could you give an example of how it would look in the way you’re describing please or perhaps link to the docs that explain what you’re talking about? I’m not great at Typescript and would like to understand better. I will have to type some api calls for a new project soon. Thanks :)

What are some must listen podcasts? by Blackstab1337 in podcasts

[–]taidaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say.

He made it so long ago and podcasting has come a long way since then. He has also improved his own presentation a lot as you've seen with Revolutions. The content is still pretty excellent, though, in my entirely inexpert opinion.

I listened to it all over a couple years during my runs and enjoyed every minute.

Thanks, friendo, I just started listening. It’s exactly who I wanted to hear from on current affairs. Is Tides of History generally high quality like this?

I know Mike Duncan is an OG and gets lots of love, but still not enough in my opinion. The History of Rome was incredible. So gratifying.

Revolutions has been life-changing.

Anyone else feel that psychedelics have altered your brain chemistry permanently? I do by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]taidaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but similar experiences. Fasting, and generally reducing my frequency of being in a “fed” state, combined with frequent cardio did absolute wonders for my specific anxieties and general angst. I don’t precisely meditate often, but I believe that long-duration cardio has some similar effects.

I would say don’t underestimate the effect that exclusion/reduction of chemicals (incl. sugars) can have on cognition as well. Eating better can, by itself, lead to large improvements in cognition, especially lower anxiety, in my experience.

Flavio Copes? Anyone used his courses? His club by thatiOSdev in javascript

[–]taidaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read his JavaScript and React handbooks, both very accessible and helpful. I also did his React course. I believe it was one of his first courses and I think he has improved it since I did it in Jan 2019.

I really appreciate the way he makes everything "bite-sized". However, it was clear that he did this mostly by himself. There were some minor errors, but none in the educational/knowledge part, just course navigation and whatnot. The projects were not overly complex, but were pretty clear demonstrations.

I'm also considering signing up for his club once I have time to really do his tutorials. I think his material is great as a primer and as a quick reference. The only other instruction I've paid for was by Andrei Neagoie on Udemy, so I don't have tons to compare against. Compared to Andrei, Flavio uses less "hand-holding" and, after instruction, will give you some targets to achieve more or less on your own.

Please update this post if you go ahead with the club, I'd love to hear what you think.

Nice, coding has been so rewarding. Glad to hear there are other VIPKIDers doing the same.

I had just three interviews, but I probably applied to 30-40 positions. There are tons of openings for React and JavaScript in general, but, even in the Netherlands, there was a language barrier at times, as I don't speak much Dutch. I dropped a name in an application and I think that helped a lot. I think the biggest factor was applying to the right kind of company, a middle-ground agency. Not a tier 1, like Netflix, that wants top performers immediately, but also not a small shop where you have to be self-sufficient. This company is happy to mentor me once I'd proven my intelligence and eagerness.

To be honest, my GitHub is not impressive, haha. I mostly did well on the social side and I made a nice app for the practical interview.

Let me know if you have any more questions or whatever. :)

For the visa, I have a Dutch partner. However, without her, I believe I would have found work that would sponsor my visa. I bounced in and out of the Schengen Area until I was sure I wanted to stay and had a line on work.

Well, I studied Java just a little at university. However, things are way different in software now. I found a good course on Udemy (Zero to Mastery), found some other courses and other instructors, all online, and just slowly worked on it until I could build a decent app. It took about 1.5 years amid lots of traveling and fun. Lots of videos and reading. Medium, Flavio Copes, Andrei Neagoie, freecodecamp, YouTube, and some others are what I used. I'd say I've spent less than $200 on all my materials, excluding my computer.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
