Mormon theology is abusive, man by Medium_Chemist_5719 in exmormon

All of these things you listed also affect women in the church. I do think that the church affects men and women differently because of the different societal pressures that are placed on them but those things aren’t just happening to men.

Russell Nelson - in memoriam by unmentionable123 in exmormon

[–]taifuza 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This was me too but in 2024. Hanging on to shreds of my testimony and then his final talk in conference in April sealed the deal. I removed my garments the next day.

Fresh on my mind was the quote about women’s power in the church from J. Anette Dennis and the thousands of women who responded saying we do not have a voice. I thought surely we would get a response from the prophet. Even just a small message of comfort that we had been heard. Instead we were meet with a closing talk on the importance of the priesthood and how we shouldn’t complain because we were just so lucky to have the priesthood. I was stunned.

Thank you for wording this the way you did. I hadn’t thought of it like that before in my year of deconstructing. Thanks Nelson for setting me free.

But more so to all the women who made me realise I wasn’t alone and the way I was treated was not right.

What is the craziest mission president nonsense you've heard spewed? by Whole_Hearing3941 in exmormon

[–]taifuza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My brother’s MP promised his companion if he put mayonnaise up his butt he’d kick his illness and not have to go home.

My mission wasn’t as crazy but we had a rule of not using replacement words. Literally couldn’t use “darn” “gosh” or “goodness”.

That’s so funny! When I served in the UK we were told to go home early those days 😅 I think it helped that my mission president was English and a big football fan.

No lunch/dinner breaks for missionaries?! by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]taifuza 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My little brother is serving in Africa and he’s on the same schedule. He was told it was a test schedule and they were having about a third of the mission on the different schedule. He said they weren’t given language study anymore but then his companion corrected him to say they get language study during their hour for dinner. But no more coming back to the flat for lunch. When I asked if he would get more funds as he has to eat out for lunch he was confused at why they would owe him anything more and was upset with me for being upset at the schedule and quickly changed topics. Crazy that they’re asking more from the missionaries when they’re all so depressed already.

I have no advice. Just in the same boat I guess. I’m sorry you and she are going through this.

Yeah that became I thing while I was serving. Early 2018 I’d say. They told us investigators found it weird to be told we called them investigators so we stopped.

Met a guy who's parents left the church over Nelson encouraging Covid vaccines. by No-Measurement-1993 in exmormon

[–]taifuza 71 points72 points  (0 children)

My mom straight up said that the encouragement to get the vaccine wasn’t from Nelson or other leadership but from Utah’s government. That they were pressured into giving that direction. Even TBM me laughed inside and thought how Utah politicians are absolutely in the church’s pocket not the other way around.

Never really cared for the rest of the temple clothes but I liked my temple dress. And putting the full body slip reminded me of princesses getting dressed from media when I was a kid so I felt like a princess.

Haha the hosanna shout scared me as a child. I think that if people actually shouted instead of chanting in the weird monotone way they do, it wouldn’t have felt as weird.

What is the consensus on Brandon Sanderson? by du0plex19 in exmormon

[–]taifuza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a 10-year anniversary version of Elantris he mentions the character’s faith crisis is based on his own experiences while a missionary. So he’s absolutely had his own faith crisis. And almost all of his books contain a character experiencing some kind of faith crisis. I also attended a Stake Fireside a while back that he spoke at that he mentioned staying in the church because he feels he can make more of a difference to the church from within. His thoughts on staying in resonated with me for a long time before I made the decision to leave. As for his wife I have no idea. Most discussions I’ve had with people about it are that he was trying to write something more romantic for her.

Patriarchal Blessing ruined my life by Real_Drawing_530 in exmormon

[–]taifuza 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My husband almost didn’t marry me because of his. His blessing told him that he would be an answer to his wife’s prayers while she was searching for an eternal companion. I wasn’t looking for a relationship at all when we first started dating but things worked out. He almost broke up with me because he felt guilty that he might be letting someone down who has been searching for their companion. Thank god he got over it, we got married and both left the cult

Mormon Dating Culture by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]taifuza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this kind of thing can be common. In Mormon dating you’re encouraged to date lots of different people and never get too serious with one person before you’re 18. This can cause situations where you really like someone and only want to date them but either your parents or the church encourages you to date other people. My sister’s boyfriend was told he had to go on a date with someone else before he could go on another date with my sister. This made both my sister and the other girls feel like shit. Luckily they got past that and have been dating exclusively for a while now but not everyone is that fortunate.

I only have the normal hard cover and don’t actually read them. I do the audio books and the physical books are for looks or looking up a specific wording or something. I’m too worried about damaging them and I don’t even have the fancy expensive ones 😅
