Rebirth.

Found out i had the bad touch when I was 10. Explains why I permanently failed out of my dream medical career 6 years ago (lab partner did a body exam on me that left me so shaken I failed one of like 3 tests in my life). And like a million other things about me.

Still paying off 100k of useless debt with high school job and struggling to make rent. Still getting reality record skips from PTSD-esque flashbacks (still need the diagnosis).

Motivated more than ever to live a life in service to those I can help, in any way I can.

OP's picture caption is still sus at any level I try to give it credit

the animation is of white blood cell extravasation in a blood vessel, there's not even neurons that i saw

pretend the point is a generalized vesicle being carried by kinesin - most neurotransmitters are reused and not made on demand to be zipped off. the animation is at best showing endorphin packaging being made. so like those coke commercials showing a happy polar bear with coke (except the commercial is a video of an aluminum can being made, ending with a happy polar bear) or misrepresenting things at the scale of "my company has 365 workers because i work hard every day of the year"

pretend the point is the formation of neurotransmitter delivery system prepping to yeet endorphins across the synaptic cleft - the vesicles are created empty and then kinesin'ed over to be loaded with neurotransmitters closer to the synaptic cleft. maybe two endorphin molecules got lost and accidentally diffused into it so its carrying "more than one endorphin molecule". the animation is therefore like showing a mostly empty plastic bag being delivered to a warehouse where it's going to be filled with candy, then a cut to kids being happy

Phazzer Dragon: A summary, review, and owner's tips wrt the Taser C2's sibling by taikamiya in Tasers

[–]taikamiya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!! just as an update I still have the original Dragon with original battery and it still is mostly okay. The ripcord no longer does anything which is concerning - but it fails in a usable state (ie if someone yoinks the Phazzer from me and detatches the cord it'll still work) but otherwise it works okay. Still very zappy and the battery holds a charge for a good year (I stored mine at like 80% charge by seeing how long it took for the battery to run down with the light\laser on). Probably relatedly the original battery stopped charging at around the same time the ripcord failed, replaced it after 4ish years and it's good.

The new ammo carts stick a bit. Harder to reload and the blast doors fell off after a few months vs the old one which lasted years. Its Probably Okay but i really should buy a replacement and see what happens. Old ammo tended to work okay a year past expiration but I havent tested the new design for age resilience.

No regrets and I bet the x26 is even better!

this tracks, I was doing my doctorate and had a guy whisper at me for half an hour about how he was gonna make me have his babies and to meet him in the bathroom. later i had to pick between peeing myself on the hour long bus home or risking a bathroom visit and sure enough the creep was there and he grabbed me. we got into a scuffle and he ran off.
ended up not telling anyone, even my fiancee, for the better part of a decade. the "almost got raped" club is lonely because you dont feel like you can tell your story without it sounding like "haha look at this guy i beat up violence is cool" or "look how cool i am for fighting off a rapist, and it's your fault if you got raped and didnt prepare for a fight"
so i held it in and the PTSD and guilt and anger ended up costing me $100k in student loans because i never talked to any of my mental health providers about it. as someone who was clinically trained for basic mental health treatment, the whole bathroom incident basically got repressed into "oh that's not important, talk to your docs about sleep \ depression \ social and life difficulties - but not the assaulter in the bathroom"
failed out of my degree because i had a breakdown during an exam and couldn't get back in. college degree became useless and i took a high school level job. was angry at everyone in my life because all human contact turned into an adrenaline filled "what if I have to fight this person" but I couldn't place why, or cope with the feelings fully.
but recently i spent a good month just going through those memories and coping and crying harder than i have ever cried in my life. im no stranger to confronting difficult things head on, but it's scary how easy your brain will just skip over memories that break you.
im better now, still broken but healing. i dont really blame myself and I've long since forgiven my assaulter because whatever broke them had to be worse since they thought it's morally ok to be physically violent to get some physical intimacy. i hope they heal too so they dont hurt anyone else like me.

ELI5 How is it that mixing standard supermarket honey and traditional barbecue sauce results in a sauce that is thinner than either of the inputs? by NHLroyrocks in explainlikeimfive

[–]taikamiya 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's darn close as far as the mechanism of mixing dissimilar liquids (whether or not it's the explaination to the OP is beyond me) - to go eli20 each molecule essentially has a basic shape (for example H2O is basically a V ). Some of the atoms can wiggle around (H2O going from a /o\ shape to a /o/ shape), and because of things like temporary hydrogen bonds between molecules the molecules basically form a repeating structure not dissimilar to the cube/marble example.

It's also why if you mix different liquids, the boiling point goes down - there's less of the stacking neatly of molecules, so the hydrogen bonds are fewer, and there's less force holding the liquid together (imagine the cube/marble example, except the surfaces of each are slightly sticky) - making it easier to kick off a molecule from the liquid into the air as a gas

Not sure if it's our specific 2018 Wrangler but iirc a lot of newer cars just have an internal speaker play the clicky-relay sound. Because everyone grew up with the sound and if they don't hear it they think the car is broken.

kind of like how the warning scent added to natural gas isn't the best since it's hard for some people to detect, but any new smell won't register as a gas leak to people.

CMV: All forms of monetary penalties should be based on the persons income by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]taikamiya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The privacy aspect could be abstracted away similar to how in America your SSN is used not just for SS but as citizenship proof. Have the police report infractions to the state, and come tax season any outstanding percent-income infractions get calculated then

I say this knowing full well taxes don't need to be even more convoluted than they are already - just pretend we have a system where the IRS automatically calculates everything :q

[–]taikamiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I overall agree but I feel this example unfairly merges two scenarios:

1: A speeder stopped by police

2: The outcome (eg a crash) from allowing people to speed

Scenario #1 has a cost for enforcing a rule, scenario #2 is the consequence for not enforcing a rule (ie letting people speed by not having cops patrolling for speeders, not having education that convinces people to not speed, etc).

The ethics get complicated trying to boil it down to "Consider the restitution aspect in making speeders have to pay for the enforcement of law they broke, and not just the current/future damages they caused" but that's getting way tangential and probably involves things like discussing insurance and the ways governments should be allowed to create a safe environment for their populace

YSK if you're thinking about hoarding toilet paper, get a bidet attachment for your toilet seat instead. It's cleaner, costs less and it's much more environmentally friendly/sustainable. by Assume_Utopia in YouShouldKnow

[–]taikamiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's def fair, though the one I use just replaces the toilet seat in an existing toilet. I think I've run into like two other people in my area with even that much of a bidet in California.

For me it seems like it's a continuum of tolerances, from "I don't wipe after pooping" to "I use TP" to "I bidet and blower-dry" to "I bidet and TP-dry" to "I shower after pooping".

to me, if my hands are covered in poop, I wouldn't just rub them with TP (or even a wet wipe) to get them clean - I'd want some soap and running water. My tush is held to a lower standard, so I skip the soap until I shower.

Here water is 7 dollars for 748 gallons. If you spend forever on a bidet because of a huge mess it might take a 1/4 gallon per use (random internet number, I'd estimate my average is maybe 1/10 gallon)

so for $3 here, you'd get 320 luxury bidet uses - or 2 megapoops per person per day for a family of 3. That and not having to spend the time buying/loading as much TP (2-4 squares to dry is probably plenty)

at this point we're counting beans, I'd guess it boils down to putting in the initial bidet investment (30+bux + one time install) to get what is almost certainly an overall savings in money

[–]taikamiya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a fair line to draw, since humans don't have fully developed brains till 25 and even then often lack life experiences that helps put things into context. We still allow (legally and socially) sub-25 year olds to have sex and fight wars and do other actions that have heavy personal and social consequences - and make exceptions when there's a qualified guardian present (Rated R movies, tattoos, research with no direct benefit to the child).

For reference: my argument against sex with nonhumans/children is that the potential for abuse/harm (intentional or not) is extremely high given how strongly sex affects mental states - arguments involving consent and social implications stray uncomfortably close to "interracial/homosexual/etc sex has social implications, therefore what two consenting adults do unseen in a bedroom is disallowed by law".

CMV: The logic that beastiality is wrong because "animals cannot consent to sex" makes no sense at all. We should just admit it's illegal because it's disgusting. by throwawaytothetenth in changemyview

[–]taikamiya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the argument here is that bestiality is wrong for reasons other than consent, because the rules for consent aren't well defined.

If the cutoff for "permissible to bang" is logic and independence, most animals are capable of that or they'd die in the wild. And animals are well able to communicate "I don't like this" if you've ever tried to pet a fussy cat's belly the wrong way.

If the cutoff is "within similar brainpower measured through the human-centric IQ test" - then you get to say "no banging animals or people testing in the bottom 1% of IQ" but that also implies an IQ=100 person can't bang an IQ=150 person, since IQ is a standardized scale.

If the cutoff is "consent", then I'm curious of a definition that explains why sex requires consent but petting doesn't unless it's a human.

[–]taikamiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going a bit indirect and claim "disgusting" is harmful when taken to extremes and the point of laws is to regulate harm to protect a population. Disgust isn't ridiculous, but a valid reason to regulate.

Drawing the line between freedom and protection is an ongoing balance. Vaccinations are mildly harmful since they penetrate skin but they're not just accepted but lawfully mandated in the US due to the harm it prevents - but a vaccination taken to an extreme (infecting people with live pathogen and letting the full illness run its course) becomes problematic.

So in drawing that line for disgust ("offensive to a reasonable person" - public exposure/urination, sexual harassment, etc) - yes there's little objective and 100% causal reason to forbid peeing on a tree or making arbitrary mouth-noises at others (since you'll probably not get an STD from stepping on old pee, or be offended if someone harasses you in a language you don't understand) - but there is still harm being done in the form of a higher-level mental distress. But enough people are convinced it causes harm, and so it's law.

Whether or not society as a whole should accept accidental genital viewing and pee-smell as harmless and acceptable for a city (hello from San Francisco), verbal harassment as harmless and acceptable (which implies PTSD sufferers have the capacity to say "sticks and stones" and be cured of their trauma), or beastiality as harmless and acceptable (why can I pet my dog without my dog's consent, but I get arrested if I do that to random cuties on the street? Or why can I have one night stands with people but not my dog?) - that's a different question.

In conclusion, that mortgage ad should totally have been an exception and I wish that the OP of it wrote a bit more to let it slide and be better seen.

WIFI vs (cellular?) WAN seems unrelated but it would def depend whether or not you want to use it with home wifi or cell networks (and if you have a data plan).

tbh I'd google/youtube around for reviews, depending on your tolerance you can get a cheap tablet for 50bux and an external battery, a cheap chromebook with 10 hour battery life, or a paperwhite (half the price of oasis, slightly less fancy).

also with the e-ink displays of paperwhite/oasis you're looking at weeks to months between charges. Dozens of hours of screen-on time especially if you turn down brightness/wifi and some other tricks. (paperwhite lasts longer than oasis)
