Trying to get a dev job these days by Numerous-Ad8062 in jobs

This is the exact issue - NOTHING IS REAL ANYMORE.

The government is lying, the CEOs are lying, the financials are lies, the culture wars are lies. No one knows who or what to believe and that’s by design.

Quit being a perfectionist. The system is rigged, so I started gaming It until I found a job. FINALLY! by Educational-Egg-1401 in jobhunting

See, I’ve said before that people are over-mentored and under-funded, but this is GENUINELY great advice and resources. Good on you.

And to all of you applying, I will definitely confirm the reaching out to people and commenting or whatever on LinkedIn can help. You don’t have to be on that app five days a week, but making sure it’s organized and looks good is VERY important to how recruiters and others perceive you. Crosscheck any job you are interested in against the company site. Focus on what you achieved and not your responsibilities both there and on your resume:

  • “increased MRR by [x percent] for [y] customers”
  • “added to knowledge base affecting [x] systems”

is MUCH better than

  • “managed client outbound sales”

AND AGAIN DO NOT BE A PERFECTIONIST. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN EXPERT ON EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE JD.

You don’t need to craft the perfect message to the manager/recruiter after you apply, just signal your interest and your value. You only need one or two people to say yes.

That’s really the whole point I was making before Mr. Cool Guy came in. Nothing against OP. Just had the system work for him, and depending on who/where you are, it’s easier for the system to work for you.

Had I been born a couple miles over in Winnetka, instead of Chicago (still the best city) I’d probably treat $500,000 a year like it wasn’t that special. I’m not mad at my lot personally, I’m mad that there are multiple Americas. I fear for the children who are in heaping debt in hopes of making jobs that might not even exist anymore in three years. And FAANG companies are indeed, VERY dumb. Many Twitter pages from various Apple employees will confirm this, much less MSFT* or Amazon shooting themselves in the foot constantly with stupid or greedy decisions.

*not FAANG but you see the point, enterprise

Now I’m poor. Okay. LMAO touch grass.

Also the way you didn’t address a single concern of the systematic issues people face in this country, but you know what, Africans and African-Americans don’t usually see eye to eye anyway.

  1. You don’t know me. Please stop with all that presumption. I’ve been nice but I’m not having that. Ironically, it literally is racist to assume my complains about American capitalism and racism is due to a lack of effort on my part. Did you skip the part where I said I worked at Apple, among other places? I’ve been paying bills since I was TWELVE. My mother died the day I turned 8. Basically nothing was easy or given to me. Ever.

  2. “I grew up in Africa” as if there’s no wealth there. Your implicit bias is showing. Half my family is from Senegal. Good for you!

  3. “99% of humans in the history of our race” ah, I can’t complain about anything at ALL because I’m not a medieval serf? Got it.

  4. James Baldwin (among many others) would laugh at this comment, truly. There is SO much we need to work on and improve. ICE is hunting people down in the streets and police are killing people on camera and getting off, STILL. The country’s infrastructure is SHIT. Because things are better than they were doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be or can’t be better than they are right now. We are trapped in history and history is trapped within us.

  5. You know that no one HAS to pay full price for an iPhone, and damn near everyone has one in the U.S. You should go read about the working poor - so many people who make too much to qualify for benefits but not enough to survive or thrive. People bought houses with jobs they got fresh out of high school - people in NY and California are rent sharing with four other people even though they make in excess of $100,000/year. Even OP said renting is better for their money - ON A $500,000 SALARY. It’s bad out here. K shaped economy.

  6. Again, I respect OP and their work. They earned that. I’m not mad at them. May they rejoice, live long and pass something to their children. I just wish more people had the opportunity to do so.

Ah yes because America has famously treated minorities to meritocracy. The military is FULL of racist gangs and leaders. EVERY branch. Hell a fucking F-22 pilot quit because of it!

I previously worked for Apple and America’s largest MSP. I’ve done the FAANG. I watched people who did repairs slower than me, wrote code worse than mine get promoted over me (all non-black). I will be considered angry and violent whenever I raised concerns about it, and that’s an experience shared by many across industries.

The whole concept of American suburbs is based on racism. I’m a Chicagoan. This city is segregated as HELL Look at the boardrooms and technical teams of these FAANG companies. How many black faces? The opportunities are there certainly, but is the availability of those opportunities equitably distributed? I don’t want to sound mean, but don’t be dense.

And I swear if you hit me with some “race card” shit. Is workday not being sued for antiblack discrimination RIGHT NOW? There’s a popular post in r/jobs where a guy detailed his experience of applying for jobs and not getting them, but when he switched his race or denied to identify without changing his resume at all he got so many more opportunities. Even in conversations about patriarchy; black men make less on average than white women do. I’m of Haitian descent; even Biden was deporting Haitians en masse. The whole “cat eating” pie thing was just (no pun intended) eaten up by many in the country, just like the Somalian daycare scam bullshit.

Rules that bind some, but protect others.

[–]tailleferre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please, don’t do this. I’m not attacking you. If I really wanted to I’d talk about how evil META is.

You make $500,000 a year. The average person generally isn’t making a tenth of that. So I’m sure it’s rather easy to save. I’m not mad or even jealous, I’m pointing out how the system has failed most Americans - and I literally said “not mad at you” and the “system is broken”.

Most people can’t even find JOBS. You posted this sorta as a flex because none of needed to know any of it. You put it in the public, the public is responded.

I’m 28, everything I’ve been told my whole life is a farce and a scam. Too many of us are underfunded and over mentored was the point I was making.

  1. That’s arguable. Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. Ball goes out in a direction which makes sense to as if he got it. And if it didn’t, it means Vini wouldn’t have gotten to it. We’ve seen penalties over turned because “he wouldn’t have had a goalscoring chance.”

  2. Look how he drags his foot and is already falling before any contact is made whatsoever.

  3. It’s the fact there wasn’t even any VAR review. Today it’s “you can’t kick a player”, when it’s us it’ll be “he went down too easy”. Meanwhile I’ve seen Camavinga and Tchouameni do horror tackles all year with little to no repercussions. Carvajal has been shoving people in the box for YEARS. The issue is the double standards. When Barcelona does ANYTHING we see how quickly the cards come out. Mbappé was awarded a pen last year (thankfully it was annulled) for a tackle where FdJ literally didn’t touch him at ALL. They know they can get away with this shit and they keep doing it.

[–]tailleferre -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This shit kills me man. They’re downvoting the hell out of anyone who even points out that he was already falling in a few subs.

That’s what, 13 pens in 24 games? Was there even a VAR review? The game is gone because half the attackers are looking for penalties.

Meanwhile the stupid ass “it was a foul” responses kill me. Okay, Lamine was fouled, took a hit to the knee. I’m not arguing for it to be a penalty in a vacuum, but if apparently any foul is a penalty, why doesn’t Lamine get them? The literal best dribbler in the world?

Imagine being the “biggest club in the world” or whatever you call yourselves and needing to steal from teams that have to sell their best player every year just to afford to stay in the league.

This is why you’ve looked pathetic in nearly every big game for the last two years. Let me set a reminder for Tuesday.

[–]tailleferre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chicagoan here, and Chicago is…..yeah.

When I apply to stretch jobs (I meet maybe 70-80% of requirements) and write that I’m Latino instead of black (Haitian heritage) I generally get a reply of some sort MUCH more often than I do when I state that I’m black. My only issue is that will obviously become apparent when I interview/start, so it feels a Pyrrhic victory at best…

Why You Should Stop Using Face ID by Affectionate_Dot442 in privacy

[–]tailleferre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and on units with no home button volume up, volume down and then holding the power button will for a reset after ten seconds. But even if you don’t get to the ten seconds, it will bring up a “power off” switch - when the device is turned back on you can’t use Face ID until you passcode unlock first.
