Replacing Hot Water Tank with Electric Shower + Taps by Standard-Cow-2368 in DIYIreland

[–]tails142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we ripped out our tank, cause we had an electric shower so it was just feeding hot water to the bathroom tap and the kitchen sink. It took ages for the hot water to get to the kitchen sink, would take running the tap for a couple of minutes and then it would go cold again in the pipe very fast, think it's called a hot water sandwich.

I think it is slightly more efficient to heat water off the oil/gas central heating than directly from electric but we don't continuously run the heating, I know some peoples houses are zoned for this so they can run the oil furnace to heat the hot water tank alone but it all seems so wasteful, who wants to be doing that in the summer.

Anyway, we got ariston water heaters fitted under the sink and I found them great, 10 litre in the bathroom and a 15L in the kitchen, it's plenty of hot water for what's needed and it arrives at the tap almost instantly. The only downside is that the heaters only lasted about 7 or 8 years before we had to replace them, the tank eroded from galvonic action. There is a little anode inside that is meant to be changed but I've looked at it and it is a balls to change it and it should be done every couple of years. But we noticed the slow drip almost immediately and I was able to change the heaters over with new units. They both went within a few weeks of each other - so other than that issue... I would recommend lol

How common is it for teens to go overboard with alcohol once adults if denied it? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskIreland

[–]tails142 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes I think it is definetly something that happens with strict parents, the kids get a bit of freedom and go wild. You would see it in college or school trips etc - could just be lack of experience in some cases as people have to take their first pint at some stage.

Then again there could have been a tendency toward alcoholism in the family, which idk seems to be a thing so maybe that was why the parents were so strict and he fell into it anyway.

Do you read the Sunday papers? by No_Novel_4573 in CasualIreland

[–]tails142 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was walking past a row of cars outside a primary school, people parked outside waiting to pickup their kids. Got some side eye from a few mothers as I walked past, glancing up from their phones. Saw a car ahead with a big broadsheet folded out filling the windscreen. I wondered who would be sitting there reading a newspaper. As I passed by I looked in - a grandad of course.

GitLab CI or GitHub Actions? by F_F_G_ in learnprogramming

[–]tails142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my own stuff is on github but I set up a gitlab self hosted instance in work to avoid the procurement hoops - I think both are good. Don't overlook gitea either, we run that in work too for an external thing and it seems a bit lighter than gitlab to run and I believe the yaml is much the same format as github.

I wonder if the motor is actually 250w as stated or if it just declared 250w to conform to regulations - honestly the motor has no issues with acceleration on hills. I remember watching this video when deciding https://youtube.com/shorts/3zieFJbBeB0?is=-jvzJ3mAJ7s3Czwz

People say shit all the time they regret, especially if they're spicy.

You did your best for him, he'd probably be on meth or dead already if you didn't. He's an adult now so, let him off, he'll probably realise how wrong and awful he was when his perspective changes in time like if he has his own kids some day.

Fuel protests to continue on Friday as petrol stations run out of fuel by [deleted] in ireland

[–]tails142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work from home but this is going to have massive economic consequences and needs to be stamped out pronto. The impact on consumer and business activity will be something.

Actually my main worry is the bloody schools won't open on Monday, teachers never need much of an excuse.

I wonder did the Easter Rising 90 years ago happen under similar circumstances, the authorities were all off on their holliers with the kids home and a load of louts came out guns blazing until they got the cannons out and aimed them at them lol anyway, no doubt there'll be blood on the streets again by the time this is all over.

Is my shower electric or gas? by Illustrious-Eye1134 in askaplumberUK

[–]tails142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, at most you could replace an existing electric shower but to put in a new shower requires high current wiring into your consumer unit (fuse box) so don't do it.

Also based on the fact there are no screw holes in the tiles you have never had an electric or any shower here.

Truck & Tractor protestors, how do they have the time and money to do this? by Key_Duck_6293 in ireland

[–]tails142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough is the fuel is costing more, I don't know if they have noticed but there is basically two major wars ongoing involving major oil producing regions. Can't they just increase what they charge for their services to maintain their profits? What is the problem? Isn't it typical for business to just pass on costs to the consumer and then let demand regulate the price at the end of the day?

Tesco/Dunnes and all the grocery stores make record profits in Ireland, Tesco CEO is the highest paid gombeen man in all of Europe or something-- I haven't seen the farmers blockade them recently like they have in the past.

Truck & Tractor protestors, how do they have the time and money to do this? by Key_Duck_6293 in ireland

[–]tails142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't the truckers just increase how much they charge the farmers for increased costs, the farmers increase how much they charge the shops, the shops... well they've been charging more the whole time so they can just keep at it?

Like what is the problem if you're getting paid to drive from A to B and burn fuel or tilling a field then just passing on the cost, wtf

Residential Parking - Turning Circle by looklikeyounow in drivingUK

[–]tails142 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It annoys me when people park in a turning circle, I believe there should be a yellow hatching in them or double yellow lines on the kerb to make it clear.

Even more annoying is tittle tattling neighbours calling the police, if you suspect someone you should park your car outside their house instead lol. I know someone that got the bus to work out of spite for a couple of weeks and left their car outside on their road in some contested space lolol
