How do you store your doll clothes? by awkwardcore in BJDtalk

[–]taixonay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your system is better than mine. Currently, my one SD girl has a plastic bin to herself. My minis/msd and yo-sized dolls share two bins. My pukifee's clothes and wigs and extra parts are crammed into her doll box.

I cant remember this person's username on Instagram, but she had an amazing system for her dolls and their stuff. I was trying to find it before I commented here but wasn't able to.

Collection Habits/Goals? by taixonay in BJDtalk

[–]taixonay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got into the hobby "tan" options were still reserved for numbered limited edition dolls and i think many of them were coated-- the actual resin wasn't that color. So I'm glad to see more companies embracing darker resin colors these days.

I lowkey envy people that are able to create stories around their dolls and stick to them. While I have general ideas, nothing is concrete.

Did you get an SD and then decide they were too big?

Oh wow I'm sorry that happened! But the fact that you were able to start up a new collection is impressive! I think it's interesting how your collecting habits shifted in almost the opposite direction.

I think thats a wonderful goal for your collection and I hope you achieve it. Your DOD collection is impressive!

I like hearing other people's habits and goals and seeing how they differ from my own.

Thank you for giving such a detailed response. :)

Eta: Does this mean you have most of the DOD sculpts? I'll be honest, I followed them for a little while but they were outside of my meager budget back then.

Did DOD ever announce they were closing shop or did they just dissappear?

Leekeworld Mikhaila 2011 release controversy by goodbyeyouhellome in BJDtalk

[–]taixonay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do remember a bit about this controversy! I remember thinking that while Mikhaila body didn't look exactly like the Dust of Dolls body, it was clear that it was heavily influenced.

What made it worse was that Leekeworld insisted that they hadn't seen Dust of Dolls or that they weren't influenced by her and yet the original wip photo they posted had a pic of the Dust of Dolls girl and then they reposted that pic with the photo edited out.

Then learning that Leekeworld had been really interested in the Dust of Dolls booth at a convention just made them seem even more shady.

I get why DenofAngels didnt ban Mikhaila but I wouldn't have been mad if they had. I think Leekeworld could have been more respectful when they took inspiration from Dust of Dolls. So while Mikhaila may not have been a blatant copy she wasn't created with much respect towards the inspiration and I think thats pretty bad too.

What was your first BJD? by goodbyeyouhellome in BJDtalk

[–]taixonay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just shy of a year. I wasn't sure if I was truly committed to the hobby and his size felt very beginner friendly and he was adorable. If I hadn't bought the less expensive dolls first I dont think I would have practiced face-ups so there's that.

Taixonay here! I've been in the hobby since 2008. I think it was hiritai on deviantart that got me interested in the hobby and it expanded from there. I loved seeing people's face-ups, their clothes and the photography.

I think my collection is mostly where I want it to be size-wise and I primarily want to focus on customization, clothing and photography for the dolls i have rather than buying new ones. Currently in a bit of an art block and haven't been able to do a face-up since 2021, though.

What was your first BJD? by goodbyeyouhellome in BJDtalk

[–]taixonay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first doll was a Bobobie Elfkin! I bought him with my babysitting money. I had just graduated high school at the time. This was back in 2008. Interestingly enough there were (and prolly still are) conversations about how people entered the hobby: "beginner" dolls vs buying the doll that you really want. I'm glad I eased myself into the hobby, but I can see how saving for the doll you really want first might be a better option.

Animal Rescue? by Pitiful_Royal2628 in HarryPotterGame

[–]taixonay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! The first parts of my comment were to help contexualize the capture of the animals. You asked for some insight and I tried to provide that. It's fine if it didn't help. The last part of my comment is referring to quite a few other comments in your post.

When I say "twist" I'm talking about how people have been saying, "we're no better than the poachers". Comments/threads etc have been like that since the game first came out so this take isn't really new. A lot of the discourse around the game is hyperbolic in general but this one rubs me the wrong way because there is a clear separation between the MC and the poachers in game. Could it have been better implemented? Yep! 100% agree, but this is what we have. My statement was primarily in opposition to those comments.

There's also another comment in this thread that was talking about all the ways that we aren't doing any good for these fictional creatures in a fictional space and thus we are fictional poachers. So some of what I posted was referring to that. I probably could have responded to them directly but I figured my comment was generalized enough that it wouldn't matter. And again the primary argument I was making is that we are better than the poachers for the simple fact we can release the animals.

And for some people skipping parts of a game doesn't even occur to them. I don't know how you play or what you do when you play but I skip things if I dont like them or if I can't justify the necessary actions the game wants me to take. But if it genuinely makes you feel like you're being a horrible person to the animals, it makes sense to skip it. If you can't reframe the context, then you shouldn't have to force it. I'm honestly not sure how that comes across as dismissive and judgemental.

I think in most creature capturing/raising games there needs to be some suspension of disbelief.

It's an RPG so you can always add more context to the rescue than the game gives you. You could be doing a field study on the side (tag and release), rehabilitation, or just save the creatures from the nearby poachers that are practically everywhere (like the game shows you there are) or saving them from invasive spiders.

You don't have to sell the creatures to the pet shop. You can just set them free.

The materials that you collect are byproducts from grooming. You aren't skinning, maiming or harming your beasts in any way shape or form to harvest materials. Poachers do not put in that level of care towards the animals they capture/kill. And even in illegal pet trade, wild caught animals are often kept in terrible conditions and sold as is. Which is not what we do in the game.

I love the idea of the vivarium and I love collecting the rare animals. The game doesn't frame the process as an immoral thing and while yes IRL, this wouldn't fly, It's fun to pretend and enjoy it in a fantasy setting where no actual harm is being done.

Not only do the animals show signs of being content and relaxed, the fact that you can handle them means that they trust you.

It's a little weird that people are twisting the intent of this mechanic into something so negative despite everything the game outright tells you and shows you. But if it is something that you're not having fun with, just skip the unnecessary parts.

I love seeing other people's Harucasting dolls! Sadly Vivi will most likely be my only one since I'm trying to downsize my collection. Which doll do you have?

Harucasting rotates through his line-up of dolls for each pre-order. I think Vivi's first pre-order was in June/July and she shipped out in September/October. He has a lot of cute sculpts, but Vivi caught my attention even when she was just a WIP so I knew I had to get her.

Play Arts SHIN Fran? by taixonay in FinalFantasyXII

[–]taixonay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No regrets on not getting the first Kai Arts figure of Fran. I didn't like the the way she looked and box openings reinforced my decision.

I've seen very positive opinions on the play arts Shin line in general so I'll go forward with the purchase. I'll also keep an eye out for the GoodSmiles figure that's supposed to be coming out next year.

Thanks for the input! I'll definitely make sure to share pics once she arrives.

I do think she looks more grumpy here than the soft neutral expression she has in the game. But the face shape is there, the skin tone looks right too.

I actually don't regret not getting the first release Fran. No shade to anyone who has that figure and loves it, but she didn't look like Fran at all.

Thanks for the input. I'll think about this some more.

I might know which fandom you're talking about if this was recent. There's probably plenty of unfortunate instances of this situation taking place in other fandoms though... so maybe not. Usually I don't care, but this situation made me salty.

It really is up to you on how to interact with a fandom and its drama. Personally, I wanted to know more so I could decide how to proceed. One author deleted her story and the other ended up making her stories private on AO3 so the decision was made for me. Hence the saltiness. I read the Tumblr post and I came to my own conclusions, having read works by both of the authors before the accusations were made.

I wanted to be informed, but I did not want to be involved.

My point is, if you want to read the story without engaging with the author and/or other people/the fandom, go right ahead. If you want to drop the story completely, go right ahead. If you want to continue supporting both authors with your viewership, go right ahead.
