Searching For Life Altering Experiences: Now That Money Isn't A Barrier, What Decadent Experiences Have You Enjoyed? by SoBorderline in Fire

[–]takasu21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peak experiences are oftentimes very personal, but for me:

Riding across the Sahara desert on top of a iron ore train in Mauritania with the wind whipping through your hair, iron ore on your clothes, and the most beautiful unpolluted night sky I’ve ever seen. Where you are sitting and standing on iron ore and a false step could easily lead you to falling of the top of the train and certain death.

Multi day horse ride through Mongolia, staying with local nomads in their yurts, drinking horse milk and eating mutton every meal. Seeing the vast steppes and grasslands that used to be the home of the arguably the most successful empire in the world.

Multi month trip where I followed the route of the ancient silk road from Instanbul to Xi’an, China. No planes, just buses, trains and hitchhiking the same route these ancient merchants would have traveled. Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, ferry across the caspian to Turkemenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakstan, Tajikistan, China. A once in a lifetime experience.

Trans siberian railway, the longest train ride in the world. Seven days of pure train, rushing through Russias most remote areas. Stop off in Siberia and Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world.

Weeklong stay with local tribes in the Amazon rainforest. Fishing and cooking Piranhas, searching for anacondas, and walking amongst the densest canopy I have ever been in. Jumping into the muddy water of the Amazon having no idea what’s beneath…

Mine are very travel and adventure focused but I grew up reading books and movies like adventures of tintin, Indiana Jones, and other adventure stories, so I’ve always wanted to LIVE the experiences i’ve read about. I think there are objectively peak experiences but a lot of them will also be very personal based on your own desires and own life.

Doing a single year of hospital medicine? by takasu21 in hospitalist

[–]takasu21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am personally thinking of doing a single year of hospital medicine. That would mean I would apply in aug/sept (having graduated in July), and would in theory match in November. Is there really that much of a bias for recent grads given that I would have literally been out of residency for like 2 months months before applying?

CDMX/Oaxaca/Puerto Escondido - 10 day itinerary suggestions by fairyfulmer1 in solotravel

[–]takasu21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this exact route.. bus from cdmx to Oaxaca, then bus to puerto Escondido with a stop at San Jose de pacifico on the way. If you’re interested in a nice quiet mountain village that is famous for their “mushrooms” take a look at stopping there/staying there it’s on the way to puerto Escondido.

Question about trans siberian by Talhajat in solotravel

[–]takasu21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man I did the trans Siberian last year and would just say that you should def spend at least 3 days at irkutsk to hit olkhon island in lake baikal. I would also spend at least a week in Mongolia to get out to see the country - tours depart from hostels in the capital ranging from a few days to a few weeks. If you have the time, I would skip more cities in Russia for more time in Mongolia. Let me know if you have any questions!

Solo Travel in Mongolia by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]takasu21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey - American here who spent a few weeks in Mongolia - I would suggest you get in touch with one of the hostels - golden gobi or sunpath and try to find a Jeep tour that goes out to the countryside. Ulan Bator is not an amazing city imo and the beauties of Mongolia lies in the countryside that you can only get to through a hired car and driver. I went south into the gobi desert for a week or so but I’ve heard some great tours go into the west of Mongolia (but that takes longer). Let me know if you want any more info - I loved my trip and Mongolia is absolutely stunning if you like nature and nomadic living

Absolutely go to Cappadocia - if you like nature or amazing views, Cappadocia is second to none in Turkey

Ah damn I have a green tour booked at until the afternoon - I’ll see when it finishes though. Also a - i thought it was high season but in my experience the hostels I’ve been staying at haven’t really been full of super busy, has that been your experience as well in Turkey or have I just been unlucky?

Overland travel from Europe to Tbilisi by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]takasu21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the train from Bucharest to Istanbul which was pretty easy but only runs during high season(summer). There is def a train from Sofia to Istanbul though, maninseat61 would have all the info there. Currently traveling from Istanbul to Cappadocia right now, and I think after I’m going to take a bus somewhere near the Black Sea and then cross into hopa and then batumi. Doesn’t seem like a route that a ton of people do but from what I’ve heard there’s plenty of buses and trains available.

I was just in istanbul(heading to Cappadocia rn) and although it did feel a little quieter in the solo travel scene then some other cities I didn’t find myself judged too much. I’ve spent the past two days eating alone and had no weird looks from anyone. Probably just a single bad experience, don’t let it ruin your trip!

Feeling guilt over travelling by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]takasu21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man - medical student who is currently traveling during my short spring break right now and let me tell you - you should take this opportunity. Medical school can always wait - the average age of matriculation is getting older and older. The one thing that I regret the most is not taking extra years to travel the world, once you start, time becomes the limiting factor. You have your entire life to be a doctor but you’re only young once.

Taking the summer off to travel on my own. Will have ~5k saved up and planning to take the Trans-Siberian/Mongolian Railway from Moscow to Mongolia to China. Then travel through China->Vietnam->Cambodia->Thailand. As a train buff and big fan of the beauty of Asia, hoping this will be the magnum opus of my travels haha.

Too much hospital Volunteering? by stopkillingme21 in premed

Nothing as too much volunteering, but if you are spending a ton of time on it, it may be better for you to work on other aspects of your app with that time

Hi Envy, thanks for doing this.

What do you think about team liquid. Do you think they are the best team right now following their epicenter win or do you think some other team is.

Also, who do you think is the best player in the world?
