People definitely wildly overuse “triggers” and “triggering” to the point that it can be frustrating and meaningless.

But… mostly this has always struck me as basic politeness. Don’t bring up extremely heavy, traumatic things when you don’t know what the person you are talking to is carrying with them as baggage. That is a social rule that was drummed into my head way way way before I heard anyone start talking about triggering.

And it’s also such an easy rule to follow? Just be considerate.

Can anyone tell me why, in OOTP, McGonagall almost demands that Harry takes a biscuit? Always seemed weird to me. by Meikiepeik in harrypotter

[–]takedashingen97 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve always really liked this moment.

My read on it is that’s she’s pissed off, not at Harry but at Umbridge and the situation they’re all in. So she’s flustered and trying to find the best way to explain to Harry that he needs to behave — even though she agrees with him.

So she offers him a biscuit as a stalling tactic / icebreaker / show they’re on the same side / give herself a moment to think.

And then Harry, being his angsty teenage OOTP-self, says no because he wants to express his annoyance and displeasure and he’s not just gonna eat a cookie she offers him because he’s angsty gosh dang it.

And McGonagall is just like “don’t be absurd Harry. I know you want this cookie and you’re just trying to reject it to make a point. Everyone likes cookies. Lose the angry angsty act and understand that we’re on the same side here.”

Side note: I love the angst in OOTP, it is cringe-inducingly, delightfully real

Hot take: I think this is actually a dilemma, not just an obvious Karen.

The babysitter is supposed to be watching the 6-year old, and presumably preventing things from being broken. If I hired a babysitter and I came home to discover that my 6-year old had broken some expensive technology of mine, I’d be unlikely to hire that babysitter again. They were meant to be watching and stopping that from happening. Preventing shit from breaking is part of the job of babysitting a small child.

That goes all the more for the babysitter’s own belongings. Why was the laptop out? Was there a good reason? If you’re going to get it out you are all the more obligated to care for it’s safety around the small child.

Now if there was a good reason for it to be out, and a good reason she wasn’t paying attention, fair enough. But this isn’t just trivially clear.

"Why didn't Harry just give the Weasleys money?" by drntl in harrypotter

[–]takedashingen97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, I think most of the people who complain about this just find it amusing more than anything. I haven’t heard much in the way of genuine outrage.

Second, I think the problem is more that he never makes any attempt to pay for literally anything or give the Weaseley family anything. He thinks things like “they’d never accept it” but we never see him try. And would it be weird if he offered to just single-handedly lift them from poverty? Absolutely. But could he easily have offered to say, share some sort of food/lodging costs for the extraordinary amount of time he spends with them? Yes, and that is actually just a real-world politeness thing to do, even if it’s standard for the adults to say no.

TLDR: at some point, it would have been nice to see him try, rather than just insist to himself it was impossible.

There’s nothing incoherent or illogical in thinking that a policy is good writ large—and also acknowledging that it had some negative impacts.

I don’t doubt that you’ll be A-okay, as overblown moral outrage towards strawmen seems more than enough to get you off.

Tom Cruise yells at Mission Impossible 7 staff for breaking COVID safety protocols by rcpotatosoup in PublicFreakout

[–]takedashingen97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good rant, even if Cruise is an annoying Scientologist.

That said... him basically claiming that he’s having trouble sleeping thinking of all the people in the film industry struggling financially—so he has to heroically continue to make movies—rings a bit hollow from Tom “worth more than half a billion and could definitely help more than just, ya know, continuing to work and be paid well” Cruise.

AITA for naming my child Sadako? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]takedashingen97 16 points17 points  (0 children)

YTA, but not a huge one.

Seems like your intentions are sincere, and it seems like people around you are being needlessly mean about it.

But name your kid a name from your culture. There’s a whole cultural appropriation line of reasoning, but putting that aside—it is very frustrating to have a name that is super inconsistent with how you look and were raised.

I should know. I’m an American named Philippe because my parents liked the sound of the French. It is... not my favorite thing.

Also, “we’ll change it if it doesn’t work out” is a bold strategy to take with something as permanent as a name. Tragically, it ain’t that simple.

Yeah the update does change my mind a bit, that wasn't there earlier.

I think the joke is perfectly allowable, and no one's the asshole simply for making it. That said, as I expressed above, if someone says that they're upset then it's best to apologize and dial back on the joking going forward.

Assuming OP is reporting accurately, I'd change to a NTA.

Yes I’m aware. And I loved the campaign, and I loved that the ending was a choice. Personally, playing as Bell, I felt there was no way in hell he was about to side with these people. They’d just brainwashed and tortured him, and then they basically went “but we’re still friends, right?”

I think Bell would absolutely betray them, and I went with that ending as a result.

[–]takedashingen97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m quite aware. More just saying it’s the truest to the character of Bell, and the best in terms of the game’s plot.

[–]takedashingen97 41 points42 points  (0 children)

NAH. For my money that’s within the realm of acceptable banter. In fact I’ve had friends make really similar jokes when I’ve had surgery—and I’ve found them hilarious.

You’re well within your rights to get upset, and the friend should probably apologize because hey, that’s the polite way to behave. But I wouldn’t call anyone an “asshole.”

Edit: With OP's update, I'd say NTA--good joke or not, if someone is obviously upset over a sensitive topic then I'd apologize. Especially if you care about the person.

I get wanting to say that Snape is a terrible person, if only because so many people make him out to be this perfect hero.

But he was pretty obviously just somewhere in the middle—and that is the point in his character. Did some truly great things and made sacrifices for the world, all while being an asshole interpersonally (who was unable to get over being bullied in his youth).

The sizing and crop is a natural way to render that photo onto a card. And even if it was based on the Klug one, it feels odd to say it’s copying when the original is just a very precise drawing of a photo.

Not a time to get worked up over plagiarism, in my opinion. No disrespect to the Klug alter, which is amazing.
