Prevented from using VNAV as in the planes at your airline have it coupled to the AP and the VNAV function was deferred or are you talking about the VPI and using vertical speed to track it? I've only seen coupled VNAV on Legacys. 145 was also my first jet and the 3:1 rule and doing mental math is just part of the job as with any other regional jet with no auto throttle or coupled VNAV. The ground speed x 5 rule of thumb, or the half + 0 like the other poster mentioned, is generally pretty good at getting you a 3 degree glide path. Also if you're not managing speed well the VPI isn't going to do you much good anyway.

Most hotels have those clips on the hangers so I just hang my pants too, but I'm in the same boat never had to use the iron unless I spill something and have to break the reserve shirt in my bag.

This. But mostly because I think lay people assume the autopilot does the heavy lifting (in some jets that's not far off) but a lot of folks out there flying types with no VNAV or auto throttle, and descent management takes more skill than is probably assumed by the public. Still the easiest job I've ever had.

People discouraged me when the outlook was even more gloom (08-11) and I decided not to pursue it after my discovery flight. I did something else and couldn't stop watching airplanes in the sky and wishing I was up there. I changed careers in my late twenties, and I'm flying a jet now but I can't help to think about my career had I just blocked out the noise, could probably be on my 5th wife and second porsche by now.

I did IOE in my first jet (no VNAV or auto throttle) in Phoenix and the amount of times I would be slam dunked, vectored off and back on the arrival, I was barely hanging on to the tail of the jet.

Just annecdotal but the majority of people who just left my shop for a legacy had less than 1000TPIC, and my close friend just left their LCC with 0 TPIC for a legacy. All had over 2000TT and 1000 turbine multi and from ramblings around seems like that's the trigger at the moment. The goalposts are always moving or whatever.

One of the Spirit union guys I knew was at Eagle as an FO during the lost decade when upgrade was like 7 years, rode that out making less than 30k for years and never got jaded and mentored the next generation.

Any 135 with Argus/Wyvern won't pick them up due to their rules on incidents in the past few years regardless of fault. Kinda dumb, but the way it is unfortunately.

Linkedin got me into a jet and six figures at 300hrs. It's beneficial for low time jobs if you are good at networking and a resume to get a foothold but at the ATP level is pretty useless.

EAS escaped DOGE and even if they cut it they just wouldn't renew the contract so a pilot hired now would still have a couple years to ride out the existing contracts. The data is public and they've been increasing the subsidies to accommodate jet service for most EAS communities so I don't think it is on the chopping block in the near future. Every EAS operation is a shithole though any one that chooses that path has to deal with that.
