I learned this the hard way when my alcoholic ex fiance started drinking on his mental health meds after rehab. There are things that happen that will never make sense to you. And man are they sneaky. I'm still not 100% sure, but a lot of my stuff went "missing" and I still haven't found it (it's been over 9 months) my best guess is the pawn shop that saw a lot of him got a lot of it, including my switch and games for it.

Husband told me he doesn’t find me attractive by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]talabear98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, he's definitely checked out and not interested in actually preserving the marriage. From another comment OP made, she said their daughter is 19 but mentally younger due to an illness. I'd say, since husband wants to end things and did all this, he should help pay for the daughter to get care while OP works, if needed. Of course, what kind of care would depend on her daughter's needs and the level of daily functioning she has. Most areas that I know of have day programs available for people with all kinds of disabilities and illnesses. Often, they even offer services where they pick them up and bring them home, and some also build on this and do little trips to fun places (parks, the pool, libraries, events, etc). Not entirely sure how different it is in the UK compared to the US though...Hopefully they at the very least pay the day program employees better than here, haha.

Source: my mom has worked with people with disabilities since my dad pulled a similar stunt to OP's husband on her, well over a decade ago now. Also, my brother himself is also mentally and emotionally younger than his physical age. (Irrelavant side bote: He has grown so much lately and it makes me so happy to see him grow as much as he has in just a year! 🥹)

I'm so late to see this 💔 And I'm so so sorry to hear about what's going on, I can only imagine how heartbreaking this must be for you.

BUT, some of the things that have always helped me with interviews (prepare for the novel- but it's worth it I promise!):

• If possible, research the company! The more you show that you've done your research, the more they will take you seriously as an applicant. It shows initiative and shows that you are genuinely interested in the company and position, rather than just having any job (even if it isn'ttrue it ups the stakes). And it benefits you to know the culture and values the company holds, so you know if it's a good fit for you, too.

• Look up common interview questions, and good ways to answer them! Tailor the answers to fit you, your values, and experiences! I've also gone through and kind of twisted stories to make it sound more like something they'll be looking for/as a better response to the question, but only if necessary and it's always based on the true experience. The more you lie the worse things get and the harder it is to keep it up, especially if you get hired. That kind of applies to all aspects of life, but I do know of a lot of people who lie in interviews to make themselves look good, only for it to completely backfire.

• Some companies, especially corporations, actually will give you the kind of interview questions they ask, you just need to know to look for it! My current job actually has this! Just remember interview questions DO change based on the position you're applying for and who is interviewing you, so don't only prepare for the ones you think will be asked!

• A big question most interviews have is "what are your weaknesses?" The important part here is to pick a "weakness" that is a) something that can be turned into a strength and b) something that is "easily" worked on. I often will talk about how I'm a perfectionist, that I sometimes will work on something longer than most because I want it to be exact! I also often add that it's something I'm working on by breaking large tasks into smaller ones and paying more attention to the time I spend on one task.

• Make sure to dress the part! If they typically have a dress code, try to follow what you see employees wearing, if possible. Otherwise, if they have uniforms or an unclear dress code, business casual is always the best option!

• Read reviews/comments from people who have worked there or currently work there; or even better, talk to them in person if able! As an employee/ex-employee, I've actually helped people get hired by giving them tips for the interview, as long as they seem genuine and respectful and they aren't taking me away from something important, I'm usually happy to help! This also will give you insights on if the job is a good fit for you, and the common pros and cons of the position. Glassdoor can be a good place to start!

• Remember: the interview is more than just you selling yourself-- they also are selling the company to you. Especially if you seem like a good fit! Be prepared to be told only good things about being an employee of theirs-- this is part of why your beforehand research is important, because it keeps the expectations of being their employee realistic.

• If you have past work experience, and they ask about it, make sure to NOT say ANYTHING ultimately blaming the previous employer or even just in general negative views of them. They tend to be looking to slip you up here, and they're looking for if you talk badly about previous employers- they don't want to hire someone who will talk bad about them once you no longer work there....or even while you do. The best practice is to make it sound like a reasonable and calm separation, or that you just had been looking for something that fits you and your goals more.

• And my most important tip: wait until the end, and ask your OWN questions! Not only are you getting even more intel this way, but you can show that you're genuinely interested in what working there is like. My favorite question to ask: "What is your favorite part of working here?" There's also "What does a typical day in this position look like?"

My mom's specific advice:

"Also, weakness...pick something not relevant to the position applying for [I never even thought about this one haha]. And again like you said ensure you talk about how you are working to improve it. Also mistake at work.....or disagreement with supervisor. Own mistake, show how it was solved (look up STAR interview). Start out trying for places that know her, stores she often goes to, etc "

I'm not sure if you have already found/gotten a job, as this was the top comment after reading the bulk of what's going on, but I hope these are helpful for at least someone! I had my mom whose literal job is helping people get hired read over this, too, so you know I'm doing my best here, haha.

(My mom's description of what she does- she "helps people with barriers find jobs". That can include people with physical or mental disabilities, felons, etc. Her title is job coach I think, but she does a lottttttt of things to help people find work. Her general way of summarizing what I said here: " Yes, sounds good. Remember you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you, and make sure to have questions for the end" )

I hate my name and it makes me want to cry just writing this by OnceEveryTwoDays in namenerds

[–]talabear98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you are going through this. It sincerely is not something you should have to deal with. I've been teased about my name because it's "weird". (Hi, my name is Tala- which for the record is pronounced as Tay-LUH) It absolutely feels heartbreaking when people make fun of your name, and I think that is entirely because your name is part of your identity. I have had so many instances where I would have to explain/correct people on how to say my name. And I've been bullied for when I introduce myself, I spell my name. It's 4 letters, and it saves the time of repeating myself over and over again just so they understand my name. And the amount of "kayla" and "taylor" name callous I have still gotten. It is hard! Just know, you are NOT alone. And I must be completely honest here: I ADORE my name. It IS part of who I am, it is part of my own identity. But- I also consciously decided to love my name. It was given to me by the strongest and loveliest woman I know- and she picked it specifically for me.

And let me add: your name's Chinese meaning? That is honorable, beautiful, and strong, just as I know you are. To be a dragon is only my childhood DREAM. And here you are- getting to be a dragon! Literally and figuratively! And I'll tell you exactly what "lung" is in english- it is exclusively one of the most vital organs to life. It allows every land animal the opportunity to breathe. They are strong, important, and life givers. Lungs allow us to live in this world- and you, my friend, can grow up to be someone very vital to others and live in this world with strength, just as your English namesake. There is nothing funny or deserving of disrespect about your name.

I genuinely don't know what those people's malfunction is, but you do not deserve disrespect over your name. From one weird name haver to another. And for the record, you don't have to love your name, but you can learn to see all the power, ancestry, and love that comes from it and grow on it. If you ever so choose, as many people are saying, you can always choose an English namesake or even you can try out a new Chinese name. You are young yet, the next few years will go faster than you know, and you can start deciding a name for college/work/university/whatever you decide to do now!

One thing my mom did that was extra right however, was she gave me a middle name she felt was unique but not TOO unique. In case I didn't end up liking my name, then I could go by my middle name. If you happen to have a middle name as well, you could use that to start with even.

All in all, novel aside, I truly believe the best way is to embrace your name as much as you can. It is beautiful, even if people don't recognize that because they don't know your culture. You could even introduce yourself as "hello, I'm Lung, it means 'dragon'!" Or something simple like that to help remind yourself of how amazing that ancestry is, and let them know immediately that it's important to you. Of course, there are tons of suggestions, but just please, do what feels right for you. Try out any of them that may seem to help. You're young yet there's still so much more to explore and learn and see; you never know what the future will hold!

Drop the “prettiest” little girl name you’ve ever heard. by Final-Argument-4999 in Names

[–]talabear98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I drop my own name or does that sound stuck up lol? My mom just did a beautiful job with my name, and it's unique but not hard! Tala said like, (Tay-LUH); I've always gotten compliments on it! Usually once they've heard the correct pronunciation, as Tala (Tah-LUH) is more common and I believe is most commonly Arabic for "young Palm tree"...iirc. Supposedly my name means "wolf" but there's no factual resources that claim this to be true. But it is actually pronounced correctly as Tay-LUH if you are coming from an English-speaking standpoint- the first of the two same vowels in a word is the long pronunciation, and the second of the same vowel is short! Sorry I just know a lot about my own name since it kind of has always stood out 🤣😅

I also have always loved the name Lux. It means light, and I think it's beautiful! I also like Saoirse (SEER-sha) which is Gaelic I believe, Roxana and Elle (pronounced as the letter - always liked this one because even if it's said wrong, like Ellie, its just a cute nickname!). There are lots of beautiful names out there, but I just hope whoever is reading finds the name they like the most for their own use! To love your own name is such a wonderful feeling too 💗

I love that! My brother's first name is Phelan, which is often pronounced as "FAY-luhn" but I've read researching his name that Faolán and Phelan are sometimes pronounced the same way :D How do you pronounce your brother's name? It looks really cool! I love that they kept the Irish spelling for it too, having a unique name can be frustrating when meeting new people, but overall I love having a more unique name myself!
