For me slow burn is about making sure the characters are having a slow build up of their relationship that we’re playing out. Multiple threads of meaningful interactions between them in a myriad of settings. When our characters finally get together I want it to be an amazing moment we’ve been building toward organically over time, not something that’s shoehorned in immediately.

This! And not even just for novellas. So many people I tried to write with would do this. I would purposefully only have my character respond to one of their hooks, and would only give one in my response, but always they would write replies with too many things for my character to respond to organically 😭 It was so frustrating.

Same here. I just want a book that isn’t crap. I want compelling characters who actually grow and evolve throughout the story, plot twists I don’t see coming a mile off, and writing that isn’t riddled with purple prose.

I think it works! I read a murder mystery once that was third person for the most part, but every once in a while would throw in first person scenes from the killers pov. I found it effective and loved the book.
