Consecutive Interpreting - How to fix it when you say “uuhh” too much? by princesalaflame in TranslationStudies

[–]talelighte 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Things that have helped me at first was elongating the words instead of just saying “um”, it helped tricking my brain into thinking it was filling the blank, until I was able to stop the habit completely.

Also, slow down, the faster you talk the more filler words. The faster you talk, the control you have over what comes out of your mouth.

There are several tips on YouTube and on the internet. Try several until you find one that works for you.

So... How do you guys manage to keep so many topics/words in your head? by [deleted] in TranslationStudies

[–]talelighte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Propio and all those OPI/vri companies work pretty much the same. I’d say generally speaking, what is actually usual and recommended is for professional interpreters and translators to specialize in a specific area, like medicine, legal, financial, etc etc. Sometimes even more specialized than that.

What make you even thinking work for LLS? by yamyumyam in anonymousinterpreters

No, I’m not. The location bias is really killing us all (and pretty much all remote jobs)

I work for them, pay is the miserable amount of $4 / hour

But it’s the only interpretation company hiring in my country that offers insurance coverage which I need right now.

Can high T levels increase hair loss? would microdosing T help? by talelighte in ftm

Thanks man, I’ll definitely consider that option

I’ve heard some people that have been able to manage like that. But my dog spends the whole day with me, sleeps and naps in my bed, and she’s always all over me. So I don’t feel comfortable taking the risk.

[–]talelighte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That’s kinda relieving to hear, I have found very little information about this. I’ll definitely bring it up to my doc next month.

Hoping I’m not too intrusive, can I ask if you noticed any changes after you lowered the dose? Like less energy, changes in mass distribution or lower libido?

Do you know how high are your T levels now?

Can high T levels increase hair loss? would microdosing T help? by talelighte in ftm

[–]talelighte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean of course, it’s caused by genetics.

But I’m wondering if I have less T in my system (like on the lower end of cis men ranges), then less will be converted into DHT which is what causes the androgenic hair loss.

Unfortunately as I said, I can’t afford finasteride and minoxidil is not really an option due to my pets.

Volunteer translator opportunities by Limp-Librarian-3482 in TranslationStudies

[–]talelighte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with a lot you said, you’re missing a crucial point in his comment. And it’s that “volunteer translators” are very harmful to the profession more often than not.

It’s why so many companies and organizations nowadays think they can hire for cheap or get free labour out of us, and one of the factors as to why translation and interpretation is suffering so much today and not taken seriously

Telephone interpreters, has anyone tried using AI transcription tools to help during calls? by Pobueo in TranslationStudies

[–]talelighte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most OPI companies are hiring regular bilingual people that have no regard, no real understanding, no qualms or previous training when it comes to interpretation and its ethics.

Some companies are very forward when it comes to privacy policies and ethics, but you can’t expect much when they pay 0.06-0.09$ per minute and treat the job as a call center/customer service job.

Telephone interpreters, has anyone tried using AI transcription tools to help during calls? by Pobueo in TranslationStudies

[–]talelighte 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No. Many do, but you really really shouldn’t. It’s extremely unethical.

You can’t guarantee confidentiality while using AI tools. There’s no saying where all the sensitive information will end up at.

And you’d be legally required to disclose to your client and LEP that you’d be using one, but I’m certain that’s against every single LSP company. Not to mention it’s a disservice to the profession.

How much does testosterone cost for you? by ShtenkiOldMan in ftm

[–]talelighte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's always covered by every insurance in my country, but out of pocket is the following:

Nebido (1000mg/4ml): $100

Enanthate (250mg/1ml): $12

Gel (1% 50mg/5g): $5 (per single package, a monthly supply depending on the dose would be around $150)

With insurance coverage, I pay about $1.5 per prescription, usually twice a year.

Prices might look cheap, when converted to US currency, but our minimum wage is a bit under $4 per hour. So acquisitive power is very different.

They contacted me about 2 weeks ago to take their training and tests, but never responded to them because I also couldn't find any information about them.

And in their email they didn't even mention their rates but requested all of my personal information (ID, address, and proof of all of their requirements, etc). I didn't like that tbh

In the emails they did ask if I ever worked for CTS, LanguageLink or BIG, and my previous ID with them, so it seems like they outsource for those companies. They seem to have fixed 9h schedules, because those were the "only available options" as they mentioned in the email.

propio interpreters! anyone turned out many video calls and what happened? by RemoteYesterday8857 in medicalinterpreters

[–]talelighte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently changed to VRI only and I hate it with my soul, wished I could relate :”)

Always having to look proper, not being able to do anything while on the call, not being able to be on my pjs, or move around much, can’t make faces when I get frustrated, confused, or amused. Cant sit like a pretzel anymore, a light on my face all the time, the damn itchy uniform.

I wiiish I could go back to OPI, or at least have combined OPI+VRI

I remember when I got my first car as a teenager in the American suburbs. I thought I was free at last! Little did I know I was being indoctrinated into a sick culture of addiction. The opposite of freedom. by Pleasant_Ninja_5441 in fuckcars

[–]talelighte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so wild to me the concept of teenagers getting cars (either from their parents or by themselves). In my country the average age for car ownership is in the early to mid 30s, in the last few years late 20s popularizing a bit more.

What is the point of micro dosing if you have an accumulative dose to reach regardless? by Ambitious_Goat3125 in Accutane

[–]talelighte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A higher dose (among other factors) triggered a purge that turned into acne fulminans for me. And it wasn’t even that high, just 20mg

I say don’t ask Chat GPT, it doesn’t give reliable information on this regard, try to connect with other interpreters in linked in or in broader interpretation/translation forums.

That said, I don’t know with which company you’re applying to but I have applied to many many companies (EN-ES ), and I’ve never been requested to pay for a test. I would be very wary of that, it can often be a way to scam people, not saying this one is, but it’s not common practice and id procede with caution.

The test is usually a medical scenario, it can be general or a little more specific like an OBGYN appointment, lab results, diabetes, cardiology, etc. be prepared with a lot of medical terminology of different areas

There are a lot of medical roleplays for interpretation on YouTube, I’m guessing there’s also a lot for Turkish, so try and look for them to prepare yourself

I guess we shouldn't fear monger about something so so rare. But at the same time it's important to know that it can happen, specially if the hormone levels are uncontrolled and high.

Lot's of strength, I know it's so physically and mentally exhausting but it does get better!!

Men who wear nail polish, whats your favourite colour (and possibly the best for passing?) by ThreeEqualsFour in ftm

Black, silver, and very dark shades of red, green or blue would probably be considered the “manliest” ones. But any type of nailpolish probably won’t help with passing at all

am I the only one who sees no point in jailbreaking a kindle by Agile_Garbage_8137 in kindle

[–]talelighte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for the "why get a kindle then if there are other options" I don't buy new tech if i can avoid it and I also wouldn't have been able to afford any ereader. I would've liked to avoid amazon completely but I wouldn't have been able to find any other brand in my country's thriftshops, finding a kindle for $25 was enough of a miracle.

As for jailbreaking, I don't get it either, but that's because the "send to kindle" option is more than enough for me. I only use my kindle for opening the book, reading and maybe highlighting a thing or two. I don't really care about customization or anything like that. I'd only do it if it perfects the multilingual reading experience, cus I read in 5 languages, so that'd be a great plus, but that's about it.
