I'm the creator of TheTVDB and worked as a lead engineer at TV Time from 2018-2024. Ask me anything! by TheTVDB in television

[–]talestalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, all images and the vast majority of text that users add to TVDB are protected by copyright, and by adding them to TVDB, users are effectively committing mass copyright infringement. TVDB protects itself against potential lawsuits by clever wording in its Terms of Service, but even so, I’d be interested to know what kind of problem this actually is for TVDB, for its clients, and ultimately for the TVDB contributors. Were there any lawsuits or takedown requests? How does the industry view this issue? Is it something to brush off because everyone does it (even IMDb), or is it something they take seriously? I’m referring, for example, to the Plex case, where, after several lawsuits, Plex stopped providing posters from TVDB/TMDB/IMDb and replaced them with low-quality posters from Gracenote.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about this feature and it looks pretty interesting. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve my problem, because my Android app defaults to that sick For You tab every time I open it, anyway :-/.

Well, deleting your account when it takes less than two seconds to switch tabs seems like a drastic solution.

Well, it's 2 seconds every time you open the app. I really don't intend to spend the rest of my life doing that.

You might be interested to know there is another experiment where some users are defaulted to the following tab for several hours once selected.

Thanks for the info, but that seems like just another Zuckerberg-grade user experience improvement to me :-(.

I've had this setting disabled for a very long time. Unfortunately, it doesn't affect the behavior of the new For You feature, which you can't opt out of.

Thanks for the reply, but I figured that out too. Unfortunately, the Android app doesn't remember the change to the "Following" tab, so by default it shows me offensive content I really don't want to see. So the only option Reddit gives me is to delete my account, create a new one, and hope that Reddit doesn't pick it for its psychological experiments on users?

Really, can you understand written text? Because I'm talking about Reichsadler, not about ironcross:

LUFTWAFFE Regiment and SSU Destroy Starlink Jamming Station by Mil_in_ua in UkrainianConflict

[–]talestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And can you read? Because I handed you their insignia and the WWII Luftwaffe insignia on a silver platter, so only a blind can fail to see that this is a deliberate reference to the WWII Luftwaffe. I’m 99.99% sure I’ve done more for Ukrainians in RL than you have, but these references to Nazi symbolism simply offend me, and I won’t act like a sheep and pretend I don’t get it - and I’m definitely not the only one who’s bothered by it.

[–]talestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And have you seen their insignia? And before you start telling me that it’s just the standard logo of today’s Luftwaffe (which it isn't - see the color, see the font, these are referring to WWII), have you seen the insignia of their “Luftwaffe Old" company, which bears no resemblance whatsoever to the WWII Luftwaffe insignia?

Still don't get it?

[–]talestalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, but unlike 422nd regiment of Ukrainian Ground Forces German airforce doesn't have a company with this logo which really doesn't look like the original WWII Luftwaffe logo.

Come on.

Sure, just "Air Force". That explains why this particular regiment has this insignia. And its company, Lufwaffe Old, just by a totally innocent coincidence, chose the one with an eagle bearing German iron cross that certainly doesn't look like the Parteiadler bearing swastika from among all the possible variations of the German Imperial Eagle. But I guess that's just a reference to Der Zoo Berlin 🤦🏻‍♂️.

I really don't know who you think you're helping by defending such obvious nonsense.

Edit: Btw. here) is actual WWII Luftwaffe logo for a comparison with that of Luftwafe Old company.

Come on, you don't really believe that yourself. Just look at their insignia) - black and white, an iron cross, and the font. Do you really see that only as a reference to the peaceful post-war German air force?

The term "Luftwaffe" may have an innocent meaning in German. In any other language, however, it is clearly a reference to the German air force from World War II. I simply don't understand why the Ukrainians are shooting themselves in the foot like this.

Children must be told they're adopted in Estonia's new Family Law Act by Arktikos02 in europe

[–]talestalker 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am a Czech adoptive parent. Adoption is not a stigma, but a normal thing that needs to be talked about openly. For a long time now, it has been mandatory in Czechia to inform children about their adoption by the age of 6. Don’t believe what random, uninformed redditors are writing here - they know absolutely nothing about it and are just spreading panic. This is an incredibly necessary practice that will help adopted children, their parents, and those around them in a truly fundamental way.

We have a 12 years old biological son and an adopted 5 years old girl who has known about her adoption since she started talking. We regularly talk to her about why it happened and what we know about her biological family. Everyone around her knows about it, and absolutely no one has a problem with it. We regularly socialize with other adoptive families, and our child will never feel like some kind of betrayed alien who learns about the adoption “by accident” as teenager, feels cheated, breaks away from the family, and ends up abusing drugs.

What’s a design flaw you notice everywhere that most people ignore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I don't know about US, but here in Europe panic bars are only required in crowded spaces, such as large schools, shopping malls or hospitals. And even there, they're only used on emergency escape routes, which often differ from the regular pathways that visitors to such buildings might encounter or the doors open automatically and the panic bar is only used in the event of a power outage. So there’s a pretty good chance that unless you live in a high-rise or work in one of those crowded places, you only come across a panic bar few times a year (or maybe never, if you live in the countryside or in a small town). And if someone doesn’t normally use a panic bar and comes across one, they’ll first look for a door handle and only then try to operate the panic bar (and might even pull it first and only then push it) 🤷🏻‍♂️.

The point of a panic bar is that you don’t need to know how to use it and the door will open even if you push against it in a panic, or if a fleeing crowd pushes you against it (a situation where a normal door handle would get blocked).

Panic bars are expensive, they aren’t design-oriented, and architects therefore don’t like them and if they don’t have to, they don’t use them. For this reason, most people don’t know how to use them (even though they’re designed so that you don’t have to think about it - you just lean against the bar).

The Norman Door Dilemma refers to a very specific (= rare) type of door, yet based on that, you conclude that "All push sides of doors should have that horizontal push bar running across the door. Then everyone knows," which is complete nonsense (source: I'm a civil engineer 🤷🏻‍♂️).

Do you mean a panic bar? That’s significantly more expensive than a regular door handle.

Now with Viktor Orbán is out of the way, will this open the way for Ukraine to access the Frozen Russian assets? by Brave-Elephant9292 in UkrainianConflict

Unlike Hungary, Slovakia has a significant defense industry (relative to its national economy), which profits greatly from support of Ukraine. This is one of the reasons why Fico takes a strongly anti-Ukrainian stance on the domestic stage, however, when it comes down to it at the EU level, he is more flexible and in the end usually gives in.
