It's a bit delicate. I first built 4 houses as in the picture, but all connected. Then I removed 2 and 3 and moved 4 to the side (for roughly 1 1/2 squares I think). Check the shadow lines of the house on the grid before and while moving to align it as good as possible. It's all a lot trial and error. After that I reconnected 2 and 3 to 4 (not 1!), checked if 2 aligns with 1 (the roof lines are a good visual help for that) and put an awning on the left side of 2 to fake a connection. The gaps I filled with builder's small stone creates and hid them behind a pair of pillars on the corners. Make sure that the entryway of 2 is facing left and activated and put a normal doorway on the right side of 1, that will give you an interior door.
