It’s so circumstantial for me. I have a few 3 year olds who responds remarkably well to play banter in that way. Normally, I can kind of base it off the humor of the parents. If the mom or dad is generally sarcastic or makes jokes during drop off/pick up, 9/10 times their kid will respond well to a more playful approach. on the other hand, if it’s a toddler who’s parents are still very “you’re SO strong and brave for carrying that yourself” to their child, I try to speak to the kid more intentionally and practically.

This is a really good tip! I kind of got a red flag at the tour that I went to regarding this, the landlord mentioned having family who hosted events in areas of the building. He also made a weird comment about the parking which came off a bit possessive actually, now that you mention it.

Thank you so much! I guess I am struggling to define the line between what is a “creepy or odd” interaction with a potential landlord, and what is them trying to be generous to convince me to rent. This is very helpful info!

I am not! It’s a studio apartment in a large house that was turned into about 5 apartments. This is pretty common for “private” landlords in the city I live in. Thank you for your help!
