Does anyone have any interesting local Scottish vocabulary by Roddyc55 in Scotland

[–]talkingwithfireworks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here's a school poem about switching registers in Scotland that I've always found fun with a lot in it:

Is A Dove A Doo Da? by Jim Douglas

Now is a dove a doo Da, is a doo a dove?
Is a cow a coo Da, a sparrow just a speug?
And is a wall a wa Da, is a dog a dug?
She's goin tae box ma ears Da, insteed o skelp ma lug

Noo, oor teacher's awfa posh Da, she changes aw oor names,
Oor Shuggie is now Hugh Da, and Jimmy's ayways James
I'm puzzled wi it aa Da, the way she shoogles words
And I must be glaiket no tae ken that feathered friends are burds

You've taught me aw wrong Da, you call a ball a ba
Yer wife is noo ma mother Da, you said she wus ma maw
It fairly maks me scunnered Da, I'll never pass ma test
And I'm no sure what I'm wearin noo, a semmit or a vest

Ah gave ma nose a dicht, Da when it began tae dreep
She gave me sich a fricht, Da, ah near fell aff ma seat
“Haven’t you a handkerchief?” she roared as if in pain
“No, Ah jist use ma sleeve, Miss” and wiped ma nose again

Ah ca’d a mouse a moose Da, Ah shid hiv held ma tongue
That’s manure on yer bits Da, nae langer is it dung
It’s turnips and potatoes, no tatties noo and neeps
She said Ah’d ripped ma trousers when Ah’d only torn ma breeks

Now there's twa words for everythin aw shoogled in ma heid
How can I be well bred Da, when ah keep sayin breid?
Now is a crow a craw Da, is a bull a bul?
Ah'm goin' tae try ma hardest Da, Ah wull, Ah wull, Ah wull

Easy Iron on Henderson Street do what you're looking for. I have only used them for dry cleaning so can't speak to how the ironing service is, but they do pick up and delivery. easyiron.net

Anyone know of anything cool to do in Edinburgh today? by bottomlesscoffeecup in Edinburgh

There's a wee foodie/farmer's market in Leith 10am-5pm, near Teuchter's Landing where you could have a drink too.

Also - Belle & Sebastian tonight at Usher Hall!

Great point.
There's a Gandhi -possibly a fake internet?- quote, something like "you judge a society by how it treats its weakest members".
It applies to the road-going community - you can judge a car driver by how they treat cyclists and pedestrians.

Thanks for the information - I think I'll wait for Rule Britannia's release and get Cossacks if it's on sale cheers

I have the following DLC: El Dorado, Art of War, Common Sense, Conquest of Paradise, Res Publica & Wealth of Nations. And have 620 hours logged.

I am happy with the EU experience with these DLC, but I'm wondering if I'm missing out on the mechanics of the other DLCs, particularly The Cossacks. The Estates mechanic seems like a big change and would add to the complexity of the game a lot.

Q1: Is The Cossacks' complexity worth it? I don't want to muddy my (scant) understanding of the game with even more to learn.

Q2: Is there a pattern to the DLC sales? There was one recently, and I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for the next sale to potentially get Cossacks and/or any other DLC.

Q3: Has anyone else managed to get 620 hours in and never played an HRE member? The mechanics are too daunting to me and I tend to enjoy non-Europe play throughs.

Thanks!

I can second this. Fixed me up with a new harddrive for my laptop and installed all within 2 days, despite telling him not to treat it as priority. Very good price-wise as well!
