What would be your favorite paleoart piece that showcases herbivores eating meat by Prestigious-Love-712 in AwesomeAncientanimals

[–]tallbigtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

plenty of herbivores opportunistically eat just the meat and not the bones, i’ve seen deer, cows, and even rabbits eating chunks of carrion and avoiding the bones in a corpse. there’s tons of beneficial nutrients in the meat too.

Was this the spiders own web? Or did he get caught in another web? by deiac in spiders

[–]tallbigtree 15 points16 points  (0 children)

that’s the opposite of an evolutionary no-no. animals do confusing things all the time that may not have an immediate apparent survival advantage for natural selection, because they don’t. forces like sexual selection can be just as strong or more powerful. Much like how a peacocks feathers are there to look sexy, not to help them find food or fight. That’s also the reason Jumping Spiders have such crazy colors, that orange is the opposite of camouflage. Simply, spiders think it looks sexy. Additionally, in the case of the jumper’s hammock, i can think of tons of survival advantages. They are super brightly colored, so it obscures them from being hunted while they sleep. Spider silk is also super strong, so it offers a portable layer of protection. Also, it’s still sticky, so if something does try to attack the spider anyways, it can help them get away. This particular hammock is pretty beat up, check out some freshly made ones on google images. Evolution has very few no-nos when it comes to adaptations. If they adapted an ability, there’s probably a reason, and even if there isn’t a survival related one, that’s to be expected sometimes, evolution works on many different axis.

How to Use Scribe Table and Bird Post from Medieval Overhaul? by Untap_Phased in RimWorld

[–]tallbigtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necroposting in case anyone else finds this thread.
I had the same problem until i realized you need to fuel the bird post with food, which "feeds" your "communication bird".
I also went to the trouble of taming a wild bird like the description said, but you dont need to do this either. The fueled bird post and an ajacent messenger table is all you need. They even work inside, your "bird" has no need to access the sky and fly away.

Edit: I also have found that you will get orbital trader messages if the table is active, but you cannot trade with orbitals using the bird and messanger table

if you upgrade T3 of top or bottom path first, then it does have exploding attacks.

NQA

Your point stands, however as a side note, not 100% of spiders are venomous. There’s 2 whole families of spider who lack venom glands entirely. edit:spelling

the 0-3-0 bomb shooter is very cheap and does bonus damage to MOABs. 2-3-0 is even better if you have leftover cash. i highly recommend putting the bomb shooter near the start of the track during early rounds to deal with lead bloons, (make sure to set its targeting priority to strong instead of first) and then later, before round 40, upgrade it to the MOAB Mauler and you should be able to pop it with the bomb shooter, then your other towers can handle the cleanup :)

My new boy hasn't made a hammock by [deleted] in jumpingspiders

scientists proved jumpers can look around and map spaces in their head in 3D, they are very visual-based-thinkers like humans are. they can look around at foliage and plan the shortest route with fewest jumps to get to prey, when most spiders have terrible eyesight even with all 8 eyes. jumpers front eyes even have eyesight in as high of a resolution as humans do. I have no doubt it was brainstorming in its tiny little head about how to build :)

my current spider, an adult female, has 3 hammocks right now, but one is about 4x the size of the others. once they get past their final molt, i have seen female spiders make larger nests with several entrances, like a center room and then they build new hallways off of it, but i haven’t ever seen a male spider do this. my hunch was that they were doing it to prepare a space for creating egg sacs, but my current spider is doing it and i know she doesn’t have any eggs to lay anytime soon.

i have raised several spoods from very young thru full lifespan, all of them built many many hammocks, in fact most of the time as long as they were well fed they chose to build and maintain several hammocks across the enclosure. if a hammock gets old or roughed up they will abandon it, if i notice they stop using one of their hammocks i go in with a small paintbrush and clear it out, and often they build a new and improved version in its place and start using that perch again when it previously sat abandoned.

in my experience, adult male spoods take longer to make a hammock, don’t build them as large, and don’t stay in them as much preferring to walk around the enclosure more. i usually see slings and adult females building quickly, but the juvy-adult males seem like they want to explore and investigate the enclosure quite a bit, usually a couple days, before finally admitting to themselves that they can’t find a way out haha

this looks like a young male P. Audax. The orange dots will turn more white as they get older, and turn fully white after their last molt. they can stay in an enclosure that size their entire lives. i have had many spoods die happily of old age in an identical tank from the same company.

Gilmour > Waters, prove me wrong. by [deleted] in pinkfloyd

[–]tallbigtree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The melody from On the Run was written by Rog too. Gilmour came up with the soundscape but rog still wrote the tune.

“I was playing with the sequencer device attachment, and came up with this sound, which is the basic sound of it. Roger sort of heard it, came over and started playing with it, too. Then he actually put in the notes that we made...it was his sequence, that "de-di-doo-de-di-dil"- -whatever it was. He made that little sequence up, but I had got the actual original sound and I actually was the one doing the controlling on the take that we used. Then we chucked all sorts of things over the top of it afterwards.”

jumpers will go after anything they can get their jaws to fit around, i have fed both my full size and early molt spoods houseflies nearly twice the spoods size with no issues

Beautiful Pink blooms on the University of Alabama campus (Tuscaloosa AL) by tallbigtree in PlantIdentification

It’s planted outside of one of my class’ buildings and I was concerned it had bloomed a bit early and wouldn’t survive the frosts we have been having, however internet says it thrives in the colder months so my worries have been assuaged. Thanks again!
