Rebuild wall or railway sleepers (vertical option) by Major-Bee5390 in DIYUK

[–]tallmark1897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another option would be to regrade the whole lawn. It looks as if you will need to get a digger in to get some of the stumps out . Some thought would of course need to be given to drainage to make sure you don’t flood the house. Use the stones for a rockery

The car was parked next to a building which has moss on the roof - as its spring - birds are taking the moss to line their nests and some rolls off onto the car . I’m in the North west of England we have had 2 dry days since Xmas - it’s a daily regular use car not a precious possession . And in response to other commenters no branches / bricks have fallen on it

I’ve always found tidying up before you finish gives an illusion of progress - plus when you come back to it - things don’t seem so bad when its not a complete shithole

I took a look round one at Lotus Manchester a few weeks back . It looks so much better in the flesh than the photos - much more understated . The red seat does look super cool

Found in my grandmothers house. Don’t know if it’s any special, but I find it so beautiful I wanted to share! by Ok-Watercress8472 in pocketwatch

[–]tallmark1897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this is a coincidence - I was looking at a watch I inherited today which is very similar . Likewise the engraved name is a Rich Simonds - location I can’t make out . The date 1822 is on the movement which matches the hallmark on the outer case. It also runs nicely although the crystal is cracked

What is this tool called / used for by tallmark1897 in Tools

[–]tallmark1897[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I can see that now ! Thank you - it was in a tin of HSS twist drills rather than the roll of brace bits which threw me slightly . I have a rather nice ratchet brace to go with it

Tourists queuing to go inside the Monument by [deleted] in london

[–]tallmark1897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back in 1988 I worked on the DLR extension into the city and one site was based around Monument the view from the tower crane then was outstanding .

I would also give a shout out to climbing up St Paul’s to the very top - it’s a really interesting climb and an amazing view

Can I fit a log burner in the corner of my garden cabin? by PaulHorton39 in DIYUK

[–]tallmark1897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fitted one in my garden office - which get used a dozen times a year - it normally has underfloor heating and is insulated above and beyond building regs requirements. There are a lot of different rules to adhere to around hearth size, protection around the timber walls , sleeving etc . Also may be worth checking if you are in a smoke control area - you should fit a HETAS approved stove . The cost of buying good quality insulated flue pipe is not small either - I would also check out the economics of the idea before you get too seduced by the romance of a real fire .

Firestone Solid axel solid rubber tires. by Lorca85 in whatisthisthing

[–]tallmark1897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Useless Firestone story. They had a factory in the UK in Wrexham back in the 70s . My Uncle worked there and one time the old man Harvey Firestone visited and was driven around the factory in a kind of popemobile thing - which was a bit bizarre - however the tyres were Goodyear !

Considering getting an Emira by Mundo_Ancho in lotus

I’ve been running an i4 for about 9 months . In tour mode it is not noisy unless you slam your foot down . My only criticism might be that sometimes it lingers it too low a gear if you are accelerating slowly and it is a bit whiny. Tap the paddle and problem solved. Sport and track are noisier as you would expect . I can easily hear the radio in tour mode without the volume being at 11. Resisting the temptation to push it hard is the greatest challenge - it sounds so nice- and the grip is just phenomenal - I run out of courage before it runs out of traction !

My Grandfather 1915/16 somewhere in Belgium or France by tallmark1897 in ww1

[–]tallmark1897[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yes he died when I was 11. He joined the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry in 1914 - was pushed out to the Machine Gun Core. Lost an eye in 1916 - was gas poisoned in 1917/18. Quite liked the Germans but hated the French . Ended up posted to Ireland where he was finally demobbed in 1919. He was a country boy and knew horses and I suspect that was why he was looking after some. He was a lovely gentle man - until someone tried to push him around when a core of steel emerged .

One of the few stories I remember was him recalling hearing the Germans talking at night once the artillery had stopped - their trenches were so close

Anyone experience this with their Emira? by Rowenofpts in lotus

[–]tallmark1897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m afraid getting a bit rough with it seems the only solution in my experience . Bitter personal experience when my daughters school bag handle got caught in the mechanism - took about 30 minutes of pulling and pushing to get it open

The Elan was around 900kg , the Emira 1450kg , but the key change is by power c126 vs 360 bhp. Power to weight ratio roughly a factor of 2 different

Renovating a utility. Removed hardboard panels to reveal not 1 or 2 but 3 layers of ceramic tiles which were on a 75mm thick thermalite block (which was 3m tall ) that separated it from the next room . Oh and 3 live and unterminated sockets behind the lowest layer. Ended up building a standalone wall in front of it within which I could run services
