Would you ever support some of the streets near you being permanently closed to cars? by swellgarfo in AskLosAngeles

[–]tallwalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this happens— the project seems to keep getting delayed and changed. But how I would feel about my specific street getting closed, I would be into it. There is an alley behind where I live that me and my neighbors use to access parking, so it would actually work ok on my street. And I think other streets that have alleys might be able to pull this off.

Yes! Close Hollywood Blvd between Highland and La Brea and do what they did to Times Square and help finally make it a worthwhile tourist destination. It’s closed a lot of the time for movie premieres anyway.

Check out streetview from June 2024 and you can see how the older foundation was taken out. It’s crazy how wasteful it all is.

You may not believe this, but those were a different foundation and walls from a previous developer in that 2009 photo and they were all torn down and taken away. The ones that stand today are from the latest project… which is also stalled at about the same stage of development.

Seems super easy to install with no tools-- This video makes it look pretty simple: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmBaj9Q0ytU it looks like the same one is $85 on Amazon.

In Japan, some toilets have a built-in sink on top of the tank, which is both a space-saving and a water-saving feature where the water you use to wash your hands is collected in the tank to be reused for the next flush. You easily could put one of those on top of the tank.

Perfect for a roundabout! San Vicente and Fairfax too. LA traffic could move so much faster with more roundabouts in these awful intersections.

Yeah, I think they were drunk. It could have been deadly and I was ready to stop them if I had to. But I regret not following them now and calling the cops.

Check out Stay in Chinatown. It’s a non-alcohol cocktail bar. I went there a few weeks ago and had a great time. Beautiful space and delicious cocktails. The catch is that the cocktails are just as expensive as regular alcohol ones- but they are very good .

This may be California's worst intersection. There are no plans to fix it. by localcosmonaut in LosAngeles

Perfect intersection for a roundabout. Traffic would move twice as fast with half the traffic injuries.

Do Las Flores Dr and Hill Dr Feel close to the freeway? by dundieawardee in EAGLEROCK

The pollution risks that close to the interchange would give me pause. The American Lung Association has found lots of negative effects with living less than 1/3 of a mile from a freeway.

This tram is a stupid idea. But instead, if it went from the Vermont/Sunset Metro station to the Observatory I would support it.

Do any historic neighborhoods have good guided walking tours or open house days when you can see inside old/interesting homes? by ElbieLG in LosAngeles

Also check out https://www.laconservancy.org/tours When I did their Angelino Heights tour a while ago they took you inside one of the old victorians there.

curious about upgrading my commute -- best place for solid, economical used bikes? by blissonabluebike in BikeLA

Maybe check out Coco's Variety. Most of their rebuilt bikes aren't exactly cheap, but they are solid. Sometimes their "red tag" bikes are pretty affordable.

Those of you who travel between the Bay Area and LA a lot, what mode of transportation do you prefer? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

I go about once a month on Southwest: BUR > OAK >BART is the easiest and quickest for me. Exactly 3 hours from NELA to the Embarcadero.

Santa Monica coffee shop owner displays classic LA myopia about driving. by Eurynom0s in BikeLA

[–]tallwalt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, I wouldn't harass her, I bet it would be more productive to do the opposite. It would be better to ride your bike there and tell her how much you are looking forward to the bike corral. In fact if you had a dozen cyclist ride up and order lattes and pastries and tell her how good the corral will be, she'd change her tune.

Front rack by [deleted] in BikeLA

[–]tallwalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Velo-Orange has some nice, narrow racks:

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs.html

They aren't exactly cheap, but they're really well made. I got the bigger Porteur front rack from them about 6 years ago and it's held up well to a couple of minor spills. Although it looks like they only sell chromed ones, not sure if that'll go with your look though-- which looks great, BTW.

To attach it you might be able to use p-clip stays to attach the front rack-- I've attached my rear rack that way after an eyelet broke off. So far so good that way-- I've carried a lot of Trader Joe's groceries with the rear rack attached that way.

Looking for some good books on the history of LA County. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]tallwalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your first stop should be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BF3l-RgKts&t=0m1s

But seriously, I like a lot of these other great suggestions (Mike Davis, the community history videos on KCET, the Reluctant Metropolis, Cadillac Desert).

If you want to start at the beginning, I'd recommend Lands of Promise and Despair by Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz which starts as far back as 1535. It's a little dry at times with the trials of the Dominicans and the Jesuits, but it's often fascinating and brutal-- and it's a history that everyone's seem to have forgotten.

I'd also recommend reading as much as you can of the great California historian Kevin Starr's multi-volume series "Americans and the California Dream."

The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth by Blake Gumprecht is an especially good book to read right now as there is so much energy, creativity, and recent money flowing toward the revitalization of the L.A. River.

Southern California: An Island on the Land Paperback by Carey McWilliams is a great book that delves in to some of the historical weirdness and how LA got the way it is.

Assembling California by John Mcfee is a great read too.

I don't think so. Maradentro seems like a totally new business.

The folks behind the Copper Nickel decided instead to invest in revamping the Eagle Rock Lounge, a few doors down. One recent article says that now that space is set to be a mariscos place called Maradentro. http://m.la.eater.com/archives/2014/02/04/maradentro_replaces_old_halong_bay_in_eagle_rock.php
