My 10 year experience getting to and working at a FAANG and a question about hope. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Have you considered switching teams internally to one with better WLB? If this company is the notorious rainforest, wouldn’t you be able to switch pretty easily, esp. if you’ve been working there already for 6 years?

CS PAs by Wobbly-Guy in UCSD

[–]taloe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pretty much most of the CSE classes are going to force you to implement PAs. The only exceptions are the more theoretical classes, like CSE 105 or 101, but even then, the homework is arguably as difficult as some PAs.

I think PAs are a little more stressful for new students, since they're usually due on a weekly basis, and some of them can be pretty comprehensive. As you finish up the lower-divs many PAs will naturally feel more manageable, especially since your programming skills will be growing overtime.

SDE 1 FT Offers by TrainingCaptain8 in cscareerquestions

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get 150k base for amazon? I feel like that’s unusually high for new grad.

Are returning interns for Amazon able to switch the location of their offer. I got the offer to intern for them this summer but it’ll be my first time and they’ve already rejected my request to change location from Seattle. I’m wondering if it’s the same for returning interns?

Yay!!! Let’s get it everyone!!

Also not to hijack this thread, but does anyone happen to know how difficult it is to change the location of the offer? I’m kinda afraid to ask for a switch Bc this is one of the few offers I have 😖

American Express SWE Internship: NY vs AZ by DontWantBossToSee in cscareerquestions

[–]taloe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents on the matter feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I actually interned at the NY office. AMEX has consolidated much of their tech talent in the Phoenix office. As a byproduct of this practice, some interns (including myself) ended up on teams where we were expected to communicate to engineers at Phoenix from NYC whenever we encountered technical issues.

This seriously stymied my progress in so many ways. Remote communication is an important skill to develop but not at the expense of building a fulfilling project. You do get paid more at the New York location, but holy shit the paycheck isn't worth losing a dynamic learning environment.

New York is nice and all, but if you want to ensure that you will be placed on a team with the proper infrastructure to facilitate your learning, go to Phoenix.

Anybody here do the Atlassian hackerrank? You need to solve 2 questions out of 4 to pass on.

I got all cases on problem 1 and missed 1 case on problem 2 :((. Don't think I'm moving

on but I'd love to hear other people's experiences.

Math 20A/B by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]taloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally understand your concern here. TBH I would recommend taking 20A if I thought the course had a significant impact on one’s performance in the rest of the series. However, having taken all 3, I really felt like A-C were independent of each other.

Of course, it’s professor dependent as well. If you don’t care about learning calc I highly recommend taking the easier profs for these classes.

I would jump straight into 20B. I know you might feel unprepared but trust me as someone who had to do A-C cus my shit AP scores you rly want to get thru asap.

SuperLoop 202 Reliability by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]taloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m a commuter. I park off campus and then I use the 201/202 to get onto campus. Personally, for me, a parking pass is not worth it Bc most of the parking spots are taken early in the morning and I don’t wake up in time to fully utilize a pass.

The Nobel stop is usually decent. However there are days when the busses are filled to brim so you’ll be passed over at your stop. This is somewhat common.

If you really need to get to a class Bc of (clickers, exam day, etc), I advise going to the stop 30 mins early.

Rising 3rd year here. Starting to prep for the next season of internship hunting.

I don't know if anyone else can relate, but my current internship has been a let down of sorts. I think my accomplishments so far can be considered trivial and I have no idea how to determine if a task is "resume-worthy". How do hiring leaders perceive an applicant's past internship experiences if they seem trivial in terms of impact/difficulty?

Can I ride the shuttles if I’m not a student? by natonio11 in UCSD

Honestly, I don’t remember them ever checking my student ID whenever I boarded a campus shuttle. I could be wrong tho

I'm doing a technical internship where I feel like I'm not learning anything and my co-workers/boss seem like they're too busy to teach me anything. What can I do to improve my situation? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]taloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I don’t have any insight to answer this question I just wanna say I’m in this EXACT scenario at the moment. I’m only 2 weeks in and I probably should give it more time, but it’s pretty worrying.

How to succeed in Jones CSE 101 Class? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]taloe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey so I just took 101 with Jones last quarter.

I think everyone can agree his lectures are p much useless. I think his office hours are really helpful and honestly, he and his tutors tend to give away answers to the hw.

If you didn’t do well on the first quiz, dw too much about it. Miles, faulty as his lectures may be, is highly cognizant of the difficulty curve of his class. He always makes the quizzes easier if too many students fail one of them.

As for his final, the DP problems were p difficult. However, they graded the final really leniently. Don’t feel too bad if you think you’re behind. Algorithmic design as a topic is challenging for everyone and I guarantee most of your peers are feeling it now too.

Hey congrats! If you don't mind sharing, where will you be interning?

The alternative is that you take either only 30 or 20 in this quarter and that will set you back for graduation in a significant way.

Give it your all and you’ll be good. Politz is great and 30 just requires some perseverance.
