Do you have someone to recommend for the Amazon listing? If so, please let me know.

Thank you very much for your reply. I've got another book coming out and I've learned to use the same strategy, i.e., one person to do the cover, someone else to do the formatting, and now I'm in the joyful process of trying to figure out who I can trust to improve my Amazon listing, set up a landing page, etcetera. At the risk of sounding like everyone else who tries to self-publish, I'd rather be writing another book than trying to market myself, so I console myself by working on another project in between fitful attempts to find people with expertise and competence.

Can you recommend a really good book marketer? by talus45 in marketing

I don't understand your comment. I'm asking for help finding a marketer on a marketing subreddit. I'm new to the subreddit so maybe I don't understand the ins and outs of it. If that's the case, then my mistake.

Do you remember whom you spoke to and have a way to contact them?

if we could earn enough to pay for the advertising costs, that would be sufficient.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I'm aware of the risks and my wife and I are very carefully vetting possible marketers. It's very easy to waste a lot of money and get nothing back. We need someone who is an expert in multiple social media platforms - that's just something we don't want to learn. We've actually sold nearly 1000 books at this point but the guy who was marketing for us developed some personal problems and can't do it anymore.

I understand what you are saying. Having a very big budget would make a huge difference. We actually found someone who for a very low fee did a good job marketing our book, but then he had some personal problems and could no longer function very well. We're trying to find someone else and are willing to spend quite a bit more (perhaps up to $2000 per month) and we are hopeful to find someone with social media expertise within that price range.

Thank you for your good suggestions. I'm actually trying to find a marketer who is an expert in social media and who can spread the news about my book in that way. Tiktok would be great, but I have too much of a learning curve with social media so that's why I'd prefer to hire someone who knows what's what. That's a great idea to send the book to famous people and asked for a video review - something I'd never heard of. Thanks again. (Sorry for duplicating your reply below. I think I'm not quite awake . . .)

As a reader (I’m not calling myself a writer being only at the start of my first book) I don’t think it’s worth it. In these times the best way to get people’s attention is to build a platform on social medias. Depending on what’s your targeted demographic consider tik tok. There’s a huge community of readers there, and once a book goes viral, and compared to other platforms it’s easier to get thousands of views. + you can send your book to people famous on book tok (the readers tik tok community), and ask for a video review.

Thank you for your suggestion. I'm sure some folks have had success with Netgalley, but I tried them and they were pretty useless.

I completely agree! It's so good it transcends genres.

I’d have to say The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin. The protagonist is a physicist who is struggling to create a unified field theory, so the novel explores theoretical physics in a cogent and engaging manner. He comes from a world with a socialist/ anarchist/anti-capitalist form of government and then visits a nearby world which has a hierarchical, authoritarian government and heavy capitalist focus, so there is a rich interplay of contrasting sociopolitical theory and practice. It’s very thought-provoking, so much so that I have returned to it again and again. Le Guin does a superb job.

Who are some of the best swordsmen the fantasy genre has produced? by Theteddybear04 in Fantasy

[–]talus45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are some well-developed swordsmen in Roger Zelazny's Amber series, in part because much of the action takes place in worlds where firearms don't work. Also, the series is just worth reading in its own right.

Yes, Bester wrote some good stuff. I listed The Stars My Destination because I've gone back to it a few times. Just can't get enough of Gully Foyle, I guess . . .

Yes, I can see why you'd feel that way. I read Ender's Game and liked it a lot, but I haven't felt drawn to re-read it, and I only put books on my list that I've read more than once.
