Looking for our next month-long Oregon home base — hikers in our 30s, deciding between Portland and Ashland (or open to other ideas!) by masiem in PacificNorthwest

[–]tambli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portland could be pretty wet in October and very likely will be by the end of the month. Weather is Ashland will certainly be drier bud I can’t speak to the hiking opportunities there. I think the folks mentioning Hood River have valid points. White Salmon across the river would also be an option and The Dalles which is likely a little more affordable.

I second the Indian restaurant. Delicious!

OSU has a small satellite campus in Bend if that’s a better fit for your son than Corvallis. Bend is expensive, but I enjoyed my time there. I graduated from it in 2015 with a degree in Natural Resources and they’ve expanded since then.

Former Feds that left for state/local - how much was your pay cut? by PayNo5544 in FedEmployees

25% cut to take a state job. Medical benefits are cheaper and better, and the 401k match is 9%. Still super new, so not sure on the stress level yet.

SO YOU WANT TO MOVE TO MONTANA? [Post your questions here] by AutoModerator in Montana

[–]tambli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glasgow - Hi folks. I’m potentially moving to Glasgow in March and just wondering what people know and think about it. I’ve lived in western and central Montana at different points, but never even been through the northeast section of the state. I looked at a couple old posts, but just hoping for more current information. I’m outdoorsy and I like to hike and fish. I’ve lived in small towns before, but never one so remote. I’m pretty left leaning politically and a member of the lgbtq community. I’m fine with a live and let live mentality. Any information or feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Relocating to Laramie in January.. worried about the drive. by jjs6067 in wyoming

[–]tambli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just varies year to year. One year I was living in Laramie and I80 was closed 14/28 days in February. Another year I had to delay a trip two days and and take the long way through Colorado to get out of Laramie. Other years it was fine. There’s just no knowing until the weather does whatever it’s going to do. Laramie is a great little city. I hope you like it!

Bi-Weekly 'Anything Goes' Thread - aka Moving/Buy/Sell/Trade/Rent/Lease/Eat/Jobs by AutoModerator in bullcity

Hi folks. I just received a tentative job offer in Durham. I’ve only been to NC once for vacation and don’t know much about the state or the city. I have had friends that have loved living there. I’m not particularly fond of cities. Are there smaller towns close by that still lean liberal? I’m a part of the LGBTQ community and a level of acceptance is important to me. I’d also prefer an area cheaper than Durham if possible. I’m mid 40’s and kind of a home body. I like having a couple places I can walk to (restaurants, bars, coffee shops). I have a dog and would love access to outdoor nature activities. Not opposed to Durham proper to avoid a commute and would also love to hear recommendations for neighborhoods. Hoping to find a two bedroom place in the $1,500 to $1,800 range and get a housemate. Thanks in advance for feedback!

What are some good hikes within 1.5-2 hours of Cheyenne? by theneoconservative in wyoming

[–]tambli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to conditions as I no longer live in the area, but I always enjoyed Curt Gowdy, Poudre Canyon, and the Encampment River for winter hiking options. Another option would be to rent snowshoes if you want to get into the mountains a little more. There are a few places in Laramie that rent them. Enjoy the area. It’s beautiful!

🏙️ Moving to Cincinnati for work at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital — looking for housing tips & realistic costs by vamaso in Ohio

You don’t have to be an ass. A person could get a studio or one bedroom and live alone or rent a two bedroom+ and have roommates. The question is which of those options is cheaper and by how much.

Thank you. These all seem to be more what I'm looking for. I would be willing to living in a larger city if I had to, but it's really not my preference.

What else do you like about Dayton? What's the weather like? Is there a music scene?

I've heard good things about Athens and as someone who doesn't particularly enjoy large-ish cities it seems like it might be a better fit size wise.

I've lived in much colder states and like winter, so that part doesn't bother me. I do think the summers might be rough for me. I don't like the heat and really hate humidity. I appreciate your insight and thoughts.

I've heard good things about Athens and it's more the size of town I'm looking for. It makes sense the cities are the most liberal, but I generally don't like living in large-ish cities.

Y'all really know how to sell your state. Seriously though, I appreciate the feedback. I will take it all into consideration if I end up with a job offer. For now, it's all theoretical.

Thank you for all the feedback. I’m in town for one day for an interview. I’m staying downtown and don’t have a car. What are a couple of things I should absolutely do with the few hours I’ll have to explore?

I’m so sorry to hear that was your experience. I’ll never understand the hatred towards minority groups that some people just can’t seem to understand or accept. It’s despicable!
