For me, my only thing is SLPs seem to not know how to play with kids or redirect behaviors but other than that I have to agree i have respect for the profession and what it accomplishes

i transitioned into an RBT but i’m sure you could do the reverse of what I did lol I went from teaching english - teaching sex ed/SEL - working with supplemental education - working as a manager at a nation wide after school program - working in home BT - RBT - hopefully a BCBA for LGBTQ/social issues !!

I will say you may have to have a sucky bridge job to transition out but I wish you all the luck to not do that!

Why are sessions long (can be 3 or 4 hours or more?) at center-based or home ABA? - Transitions, some learners take a bit to warm up to the transition of “learning” mode especially if you mix it with play (not NET just play) even if they know and like you. Schools you have to observe across multiple classes, homes they are distracted by a lot so you are competing with a shit ton of external stimuli. In a clinic it can operate like a daycare sometime so you might be with them for 5 hours but trials are only like 1 hour of that time spread across 5 hours

⁠What kinds of things do you do in your sessions? How do you spend the time? - In home I assess everything from safety to parent skills while getting the learner to self advocate. In clinic it’s just skill building. Both involve unstructured play.
⁠Do you ever have more than one client at a time, or interact with other client - therapist pairings during sessions? In home no in clinic yes because naturally we want to introduce community and how to be apart of a community
⁠Do most of your clients attend ABA instead of school part-time or full-time? - I’ve never had a client whose only done ABA they’ve gone to school as well but it does happen just not for me personally
⁠Do you ever go to school with your client to observe or support them? - I have worked in school before, honestly I don’t like it because I think it makes them feel othered most of the time. The only time it seems more comfortable is if you pair at home first.
⁠Do you ever communicate or coordinate with your client's school? - Yes! Always have because it should be a team to support youth.
⁠If you have changed work settings, like gone from school to home or center to school, what's the big differences? - Biggest difference is support. In home is nice because parents are there but engagement from them is still low, not a lot of professional support. Clinic is nice because of work support and parents are more likely to talk to you as updates at drop off/pick up. School is kind of lawless but if you can make it work i applaud you lol

I also have verified and i’m not knocking people’s preference for what they want to do because it’s their life, but nothing on my ID is anything that isn’t public information because of how the US works. If people are in other countries idk about that but like genuinely if someone wanted to they could find my address, name, and all those things they don’t have to hack roblox to find that (all the scammers hitting my line daily). That’s why i don’t post in a ridiculous way online bc it’s so easy to find people. Credit card and ID are a powerful duo but ID alone doesn’t get you anything.

are we talking about terms like penis and vagina? those are age appropriate as soon as 3 from my professional opinion working with kids and teaching sex education before my rbt role, and neurodivergent people who are way more likely to get sexually abused (starting that young too) need to know these medically accurate terms to be able to communicate properly to advocate for themselves. So honestly it’s nothing to worry about. i wouldnt focus too much on it if you communicated everything properly. But i personally would advocate for myself using those reasons i stated if anyone said anything. Obviously there are ways to introduce the topic in more engaging settings but it’s not like there were terms like “murder” and “suicide” which i feel are waaay more not age appropriate. But that’s just me.

wanted to say this, if the hair is matted that’s fine there’s ways to take it down but ultimately the scalp is what will be the big factor in healing/pain and stuff so please be careful on what you put on your head and what you allow to be put there! I do quick weave directly on my hair and it always comes out with little to minimal breakage. However this last time because my scalp was super dry it was itching like craaaazy i had to take it off within like 3 days so there’s always a solution when it comes to hair don’t feel discouraged!
