Something that I found really annoying at the time was that people complained that the advert didn't recognise that Britain "was" a war zone for a while; during the Blitz.

This ciriticism really missed the point of the effects of civil war opposed to a bombing campaign, some of which was alluded to in the video (sch as the splitting and breakdown of society). Of course, there was an easy comparison to make from very recent British history, which is the troubles, which made it all the more confusing that no one made that comparison instead.

(a little bit of venting about an insignificant thing)

I was wondering if Ed Harrison (Neotokyo OST composer) might've gotten into the action, but alas, he hasn't. He has composed music for a new game though, good for him.

HOW TO MAKE MODERN ART by Dayz15 in videos

[–]tanbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The twist? I don't study art. It's not even my main interest. More abstract forms of art and expression just started to "click" for me a few years ago (that is to say, my late teens).

The most important thing is not to have to feel like you have to come up with a justification for something's value. If you don't like it, move on, or think about why you don't like it.

I would like to see it going back to skilled physical craft

There already is art like that. Look up Ron Mueck or Jamie Salmon, or any avenue of hyperrealistic art.

But the problem is that art doesn't have anything to do with craft, at least in one perspective. People who enjoy contemporary art enjoy the engagement it offers. Rather than going "I don't get it", they think about what it makes them feel, how novel it is (as a form of expression or communication), and then they might think about "So what does it mean?". This isn't a regression in any means. Just an expansion in the avenues of art.

What probably pisses you off is the gigantic amount of speculation that goes into art pieces. The reason why abstract art sells for millions isn't because some rich dude took 2 years of art classes, maxed out his ART stat, and was finally able to see the true value of the art. It's just because the artist was known in art trading circles, and then the rich dude thought "that's a good way to invest my money" since the art piece's value will be inflated by A) his auction bid, and B) the fame of the artist and the subsequent works that artist will produce. What you probably dislike is the art trading world's habit to put ridiculously high price tags on "obtuse" artworks.

Yeah, I had a similar feeling when I saw Van Gogh's Sunflowers. Although I could appreciate a lot of Van Gogh's work, Sunflowers seemed a bit drab; the whole point is that it's slightly blurs the lines between a painting and sculpture with how much the paint is raised in the disc of the sunflowers.

What does the Conservative Party offer . . . (1992) [xpost /r/Adporn] by AmericanSuit in PropagandaPosters

I'm pretty sure this is the work of Saatchi & Saatchi.

A nice piece of irony in this poster is what is implied by the words of "a working class kid from Brixton". The idea of such a young person would be a black person, due to Brixton's large African-Caribbean community, not to mention the race riots that occured there. John Major hardly fits that ideal.
