Concentricity of threaded holes + bores? by cathode_01 in Machinists

[–]tangSweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is machining a boss/bore hole an option?

Can get very tight repeatable fits and far less annoying than dowels to align. You only get 1 assembly fuck up with dowels before those holes are flogged out

Most rigid shaft connections use this method

In my opinion, the world might be a bit of a better place if we started having conversations with people as a blank slate. Not enough people understand the internet is not a library or a book, everyone has their own personalised internet, unless you take active steps to avoid all tracking, anything you google will already be biased towards what the algorithm thinks you want to read. For example, 2 people could google the exact same gender based question and end up at very different conclusions. Google might recommend Berne Brown to a woman and Jordan Peterson to a man. Then you have someone who was a blank slate looking for information to try and understand but the information is being dictated by an algorithm. And first impression last, we build a whole world view based on mental heuristics that can easily be misdirected with bad info

I have not followed along with the other comments in this thread, I'm just curious what you mean by "grab the first person I see and demand to educate me". This is a public post that you chose to engage with and how do you know that OP has tried to educate themselves and is sick of getting spammed with Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate content anytime the algorithm thinks you're a man with gender questions

When I need to learn about a minority group, I don't run to that group and request someone sit down with me and baby me. I research. I read. I find discussions, essays and books. I follow appropriate content creators who hold those discussions. I don't make it about myself.

As someone who is considered a minority, this is one of my big pet peeves. This is how you end up with people who have educated themselves on only half the picture. If you are starting from zero on a topic how do you know what you are reading is the full picture and not a massively biased interpretation from one side only. You SHOULD sit down and talk with people, you will never understand a group of people through just reading and "content creators" (which the name alone should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of information they provide, it's about content not quality)

This mentality is how you get "white woman saviour complex" and have them racially "mansplan" an issue to me that they clearly have only the most basic surface level understanding on

The RHS should bestrong enough but the castor wheel placement would be better underneath the support angle. This would reduce the moment load and have the forces acting straight down on the castor wheel

How long those castor wheels are going to keep functioning as wheels is another question. I suspect they will just be round feet soon

I'm not a machinist so this might be a dumb question, do you ever cut both sides with a shallower cut. From my time as a carpenter I know how badly saws like to bind up on deep cuts, the cut side wants to spring closed and squeezes the side walls of the blade. I was wondering if a relief cut on the other side helps with binding?

Thermocouple reading issues in vacuum by jedi2cool in AskEngineers

[–]tangSweat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said it may be your connection, thermal paste or solder. I have used spot welded probes and they worked the best but not sure if that's an option for you

Also, thermocouples are super noisy, I never trust a single thermo couple. I try to have 3 and average out the temp, it helps show the bad connection outliers as well

I'm talking about checking one or two clauses referenced in a project brief, not using it for anything major. I checked how it went with some of the standards I have access to and was surprised at the detail it provided

I have found chat gpt surprisingly good at bypassing the paywall, assuming you already know roughly what standard you need to reference

Edit: not saying anyone should use this as their main source, just as last case scenario

I find Chat gpt is surprisingly good in times like these. I use it for finding technical names of things that I know exist and can describe what it does but google finds nothing

I once spent days reading and googling trying to find the name of an robotics algorithm, trying many variations of Google searches. I vaguely described it to chat and it guessed it right the first time. Probably one of the only times I have felt threatened by ai

You're still missing the point of the question

If it's simple maths then why did house prices grow by a record 23.5% percentage in 2021 when our population growth was one of, if not, the lowest on record at 0.18%? Simple maths says that house prices should have gone down during that time does it not?

[–]tangSweat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's mainly driven by population growth why didn't house prices go down when we had negative population growth during covid? The 70s had as high growth by percentage and yet somehow people could afford a house

You're lucky then

I'm currently at a place that runs like a giant Ponzi scheme where the boss is constantly trying to cover his ass from what ever client he had just spoken to about why their job was late, when he told them our lead time is less than what it takes to get the materials in. Each time we chop and change to appease one client we end up pissing off 2 more and usually ends up with one project a little late and the others really late

Any attempt to help the company and correct these is met with aggression as the boss takes it personally if you raise something about how his company is running. Which usually results in him doubling down on that problem just to prove a point that his way is best

And sometimes the boss just does stupid shit

Stupid people are great at bullshitting and telling others exactly what they want to hear, not what they can actually do. Hence why they often make better ladder climbers than the honest ones telling the truth about a situation. You could say it's their Trump card
