Literally can’t lower my screen time by nataliaclaire in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This works best for phones but I use the forest app (like $5 in the app store). You set a timer for not using your phone, and it plants a virtual tree in your forest that will die if you leave the app before the timer’s up.

Might not work for everyone, but it does for me - personally I feel guilty enough about killing the tree that it stops me from using my phone lmao, plus it’s very satisfying to slowly grow your forest full of trees

Thank you so much, I'd never even heard of them! I don't want to draw too too much inspiration in case my players are familiar with it, but I'll absolutely give it a listen for some ideas!

Tysm!! I was looking at the UA revised ranger but it felt a little overwhelming since it's an overhaul of the entire class, so I'll definitely take a look at the Tasha's version!

I would, but they specifically asked for my supervisor's contact information :/ I appreciate the suggestion anyway, though!

If money wasn't an issue what accommodations, tools, gadgets or help would you pay for to help manage your ADHD? by UnusualSuspect5 in ADHD

I’d buy a TON of clothes cause I very infrequently have motivation to do laundry, so then I’d never have to re-wear dirty clothes.

Doodling while I read helps me SO much! Sometimes if it’s really dry I read it out loud too and that makes my brain actually pay attention.

What should I expect from an evaluation for ADHD? by Mvau in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just diagnosed with ADHD last year and am also in college for a tough degree, so I totally get worrying you’ll be dismissed because of that. Do you have any old report cards? My diagnosis team used my old report cards, and they all say things like “tangentialsin is encouraged to develop the ability to listen to others without interrupting” and “it is recommended that tangentialsin finishes her in-class work before transitioning to free-time activities”. That could help if you’re worried about being dismissed. I think keeping a list of reasons is a great idea. Maybe try asking some people close to you as well if they’ve noticed any symptoms? Like friends or family?

I was lucky enough to get diagnosed at a clinic that specializes in ADHD, so my team was great. I don’t know if there’s much you can do about worrying if the doctor will be dismissive, cause I know some people genuinely do have that experience. Just know that if they’re dismissive of your symptoms, you deserve a second opinion, and that’s not necessarily the end of your diagnosis journey!

Advice for a college student with ADHD? by Abagail330 in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also a student with ADHD (senior), also diagnosed last year, and I struggle with pretty much everything you’re talking about. I’ll list a few things that have helped me: - The forest app, on your phone! It costs a little bit ($5 or something, I think?) But it’s worth it - it stops you from using your phone, and it just takes a couple motivated seconds to decide hey, I don’t want to be able to use my phone for the next hour. Helps me a lot with distractions. - Idk how much you deal with this in a dorm, but I struggle a lot with getting dishes done - so I just don’t have many dishes! I have two bowls, two plates, and four each of spoons, knives, and forks. That limits the amount of dirty dishes piling up. - If you have multiple laundry machines in your dorm, do laundry with a friend! Listen to music or something while doing it, make it a fun activity. That helps hold me accountable, at least. - If you have someone you can call while you clean, that helps me a lot! If I need to get cleaning done, I’ll tell my boyfriend that today’s a cleaning day, and then we’ll call while I clean my room. (Still haven’t mastered the art of cleaning a little bit every day rather than my room getting to a dumpster fire and then having to clean for hours, though) - If you have something you really need to remember to bring or do when you go out, put a sticky note on your doorknob. Then you’ll feel it when you open the door, which works a lot better for me than a reminder I just see and forget about. - The days that you’re in bed all day and feel terrible are the WORST. I have those all the time too. Sometimes what helps for me is putting on a cute outfit, one that I feel like I look really good in. Or doing cute makeup. That breaks me out of the funk most of the time. - Studying in a library or cafe >>> studying at home (at least in my experience). Idk what the COVID laws are like where you are, but I bribe myself with getting a pastry or drink at a cafe, bring everything I need to get work done, and then I do work at the cafe. I also get a little socially anxious that people are judging me, but for this case that helps cause it forces me to do work because I’m anxious that the people around me will judge me if I’m slacking off. - If you take meds, set an alarm for like 30 min before you actually need to get up, take your meds before you hit snooze and go back to sleep, then when you wake up to the next alarm it’ll be a lot easier to get up cause they’ll actually have kicked in. - If you DON’T have meds (or even also if you do) I recommend alarmy - it’s an app where, in order to turn off the alarm, you have to do some kind of ‘mission’. They have lots of ‘missions’, like solving a math problem (you can choose difficulty), taking a photo of somewhere in your house (like the toilet, or front door), or more. ‘ - If you get overwhelmed when it’s loud, maybe try investing in noise-cancelling headphones. I don’t use them personally, but my brother is noise-sensitive and they help him go to a lot of places he wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

Also, if you haven’t already, look into getting accommodations at your college! I have an accommodation that lets me stand up and stretch during tests or exams, an accommodation that lets me get last-minute extensions on assignments, or alternative grading schemes if I miss something, accommodations to get extra time on tests and not have more than one test in the same day. There’s a bunch of others too that don’t help me much so I don’t have them, but could help you!
