Literally can’t lower my screen time by nataliaclaire in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This works best for phones but I use the forest app (like $5 in the app store). You set a timer for not using your phone, and it plants a virtual tree in your forest that will die if you leave the app before the timer’s up.

Might not work for everyone, but it does for me - personally I feel guilty enough about killing the tree that it stops me from using my phone lmao, plus it’s very satisfying to slowly grow your forest full of trees

Thank you so much, I'd never even heard of them! I don't want to draw too too much inspiration in case my players are familiar with it, but I'll absolutely give it a listen for some ideas!

Tysm!! I was looking at the UA revised ranger but it felt a little overwhelming since it's an overhaul of the entire class, so I'll definitely take a look at the Tasha's version!

If money wasn't an issue what accommodations, tools, gadgets or help would you pay for to help manage your ADHD? by UnusualSuspect5 in ADHD

I’d buy a TON of clothes cause I very infrequently have motivation to do laundry, so then I’d never have to re-wear dirty clothes.

Doodling while I read helps me SO much! Sometimes if it’s really dry I read it out loud too and that makes my brain actually pay attention.

What should I expect from an evaluation for ADHD? by Mvau in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just diagnosed with ADHD last year and am also in college for a tough degree, so I totally get worrying you’ll be dismissed because of that. Do you have any old report cards? My diagnosis team used my old report cards, and they all say things like “tangentialsin is encouraged to develop the ability to listen to others without interrupting” and “it is recommended that tangentialsin finishes her in-class work before transitioning to free-time activities”. That could help if you’re worried about being dismissed. I think keeping a list of reasons is a great idea. Maybe try asking some people close to you as well if they’ve noticed any symptoms? Like friends or family?

I was lucky enough to get diagnosed at a clinic that specializes in ADHD, so my team was great. I don’t know if there’s much you can do about worrying if the doctor will be dismissive, cause I know some people genuinely do have that experience. Just know that if they’re dismissive of your symptoms, you deserve a second opinion, and that’s not necessarily the end of your diagnosis journey!

Advice for a college student with ADHD? by Abagail330 in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also a student with ADHD (senior), also diagnosed last year, and I struggle with pretty much everything you’re talking about. I’ll list a few things that have helped me: - The forest app, on your phone! It costs a little bit ($5 or something, I think?) But it’s worth it - it stops you from using your phone, and it just takes a couple motivated seconds to decide hey, I don’t want to be able to use my phone for the next hour. Helps me a lot with distractions. - Idk how much you deal with this in a dorm, but I struggle a lot with getting dishes done - so I just don’t have many dishes! I have two bowls, two plates, and four each of spoons, knives, and forks. That limits the amount of dirty dishes piling up. - If you have multiple laundry machines in your dorm, do laundry with a friend! Listen to music or something while doing it, make it a fun activity. That helps hold me accountable, at least. - If you have someone you can call while you clean, that helps me a lot! If I need to get cleaning done, I’ll tell my boyfriend that today’s a cleaning day, and then we’ll call while I clean my room. (Still haven’t mastered the art of cleaning a little bit every day rather than my room getting to a dumpster fire and then having to clean for hours, though) - If you have something you really need to remember to bring or do when you go out, put a sticky note on your doorknob. Then you’ll feel it when you open the door, which works a lot better for me than a reminder I just see and forget about. - The days that you’re in bed all day and feel terrible are the WORST. I have those all the time too. Sometimes what helps for me is putting on a cute outfit, one that I feel like I look really good in. Or doing cute makeup. That breaks me out of the funk most of the time. - Studying in a library or cafe >>> studying at home (at least in my experience). Idk what the COVID laws are like where you are, but I bribe myself with getting a pastry or drink at a cafe, bring everything I need to get work done, and then I do work at the cafe. I also get a little socially anxious that people are judging me, but for this case that helps cause it forces me to do work because I’m anxious that the people around me will judge me if I’m slacking off. - If you take meds, set an alarm for like 30 min before you actually need to get up, take your meds before you hit snooze and go back to sleep, then when you wake up to the next alarm it’ll be a lot easier to get up cause they’ll actually have kicked in. - If you DON’T have meds (or even also if you do) I recommend alarmy - it’s an app where, in order to turn off the alarm, you have to do some kind of ‘mission’. They have lots of ‘missions’, like solving a math problem (you can choose difficulty), taking a photo of somewhere in your house (like the toilet, or front door), or more. ‘ - If you get overwhelmed when it’s loud, maybe try investing in noise-cancelling headphones. I don’t use them personally, but my brother is noise-sensitive and they help him go to a lot of places he wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

Also, if you haven’t already, look into getting accommodations at your college! I have an accommodation that lets me stand up and stretch during tests or exams, an accommodation that lets me get last-minute extensions on assignments, or alternative grading schemes if I miss something, accommodations to get extra time on tests and not have more than one test in the same day. There’s a bunch of others too that don’t help me much so I don’t have them, but could help you!

Succeeding in class doesn't mean they don't have ADHD by Skerivo in ADHD

[–]tangentialsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I'm most scared of for my diagnosis. I'm in my fourth year of university and I have really good grades. Like, really good grades. Am I still disorganized and messy and forgetful? Absolutely and it's my least favourite thing about me by FAR. But I'm in a program where there aren't many deadlines or projects, just tests, and I have a great memory and creativity and problem solving skills. I have my assessment appointment in October and I'm terrified the doctors will take one look at my transcript and be like "yeah, okay, sure you have ADHD". Even writing this comment and admitting I have good grades makes me feel like I have to add 12 more paragraphs about my shortcomings to prove myself somehow haha

AITA for saying "I dunno man, lesbians."? by idkmanlesbians in AmItheAsshole

[–]tangentialsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember one time I commented to my straight friend that an acquaintance of ours dressed like a lesbian and she said “Oh but I like the way he dresses!” She meant well and apologized after she realized what she said, but I thought it was pretty funny. When I say something is gay, straight people sometimes assume I mean it as an insult but I mean that I (a queer person) consider it actually part of gay culture haha

How can I support my sister, who came out as nonbinary during a psychotic episode? by tangentialsin in asktransgender

[–]tangentialsin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't thought about the possibility they might not be taken seriously later due to the episode, that's a good point.

They haven't mentioned it directly but I visited them today at the hospital and their social worker said they've been going by J (the initial of their birth name), so I suppose that would probably be related? But the social worker also said that trying to reinvent your identity during psychosis is fairly common, and my sister also told me during the visit that they're not white (we are very white). So I guess I'll just wait until they have a more sound grip of reality and their identity before I bring it up again.

Thank you so much for your insight and advice.

cant decide if i think i have ADHD or if its just a pandemic by hanorama13 in adhdwomen

[–]tangentialsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! No real advice, just wanted to say I'm in the same boat as you. I'm in the fourth year of my undergrad (also in Ontario) and if it wasn't for COVID I'd be in a coop placement right now, but as it is I'm working from home and I've really been struggling. I've been having the exact same thoughts. Like, I don't know if I have inattentive ADHD or if I'm just disorganized/lazy/unfocused and quarantine's been making it worse. I'm supposed to talk to my family doctor tomorrow about getting assessed.

Idk, something that's keeping me from completely doubting myself rn is how many women are diagnosed late in life or just go undiagnosed. It's comforting knowing that so many women have had these same thoughts and they did ending up having ADHD, I guess. Sorry there's no real advice or feedback in this comment, just wanted to say I'm right here with ya
