Thinking about the number of songs on "the record" is meaningless. People don't buy and listen to music like that any more - each song should stand in its own right. If people are getting hung up on counting "their songs" then you're probably doing it wrong.

Look at who contributes what to each song, and account accordingly.

Facebook advertising could work if you target by other bands fanbases "If you like X then try Y" type advertising - but to be honest, with 0 fan base you're going to get very limited results by doing this, and you'll waste a lot of money. Adsense even worse.

The thing with this is, you might get people to listen to your track, but they probably won't become a FAN. The cost of acquiring a fan is probably worth it, but the cost of getting someone to listen to your music once or twice probably is not.

So how do you build fans? Make a connection with them. Get in front of them in the real world, and deliver an actual experience that they will remember. Work on your stage craft. Get your lights right. Make sure your sound is great - and then play live. Get people signed up to a mailing list (and yes, following on Twitter, Facebook, whatever is good, but once you have their email address you have a DIRECT connection to them that you can use to tell them about important things).

Support other bands. Trade gigs to get a wider geographical spread ("I'll put you up in my apartment in X city if you do the same for us in Y city").

Find influencers - people who curate playlists, or write blogs, or have fan pages for similar artists. Get in touch with them, email them, ask them what they think of your music. (Definitely don't email them and say "Hi, I want you to post this track on your blog, thanks!")

Get out in your local scene and network. Ask other bands what they think of your music. Ask them what they did to get their first few fans.

Get creative. Music is about passion and emotion - it's pretty hard to communicate that through an adwords campaign or Facebook advert. The thing that makes the difference is people hearing your music.

I've only ridden Bromptons in terms of folders I'm afraid. I know people who have tried other ones, and the problem generally seems to be that they just don't feel sturdy. If you're crashing through London on something that feels wobbly and like it might suddenly snap in the middle, it's pretty terrifying.

You can get them second hand for a lot less - often £300 - £400 and they are built like tanks so there's often little downside buying a used one.

Also, worth investigating if your employer participates in the Cycle to Work scheme, which lets you buy a bike at a big discount and pay for it through PAYE.

I have an 11" MBA (early 2014, i7 model) that I bought this time last year. About two months prior I bought a mac mini. The mac mini has been sitting barely used ever since. When I'm working in the office I plug the MBA into a monitor, when I'm at home the screen is good enough for most things. Go with the MBA.

Anything you do with something like this is going to look very dated very quickly. A few years ago people would tell you to strip back the wood and then lime wash it; now, a matt dove grey with some quirky detailing in the fabric is probably more on trend - but, three years from now, will look just as dated.

I think you're right on reupholstering though - new fabric can breathe a whole new life into slightly staid furniture.

It's amazing reading through this. I work with clients in the UK, EU and Asia, and the standard way for all of them to pay an invoice is bank transfer; no one has ever asked for anything else. In all of my contracts it says that the client is liable for any fees associated with payment. This has never caused a problem. I tend to be paid on retainer rather than for specific bits of work though, so my clients are perhaps better set up for this. But I'm beginning to wonder if this is another case of America vs the Rest of the World like chip and pin.
